Why does it have to be either?

Consider how our civilization developed. This may be outside most's expertise, but what is possible with a team of master craftsmen? What is the focus of human industry and why? How did reading/writing and the printing press change the world?

How might tools for all people?

Or a personal library in one's pocket - searchable by keyword?

Many modern discoveries were possible for ages before.

What does it mean to be human?

To what extent are we alien?

For example, we consider the things we make synthetic while the calcium carbonate produced by aquatic life millions of years ago to be a natural part of our geology.

Is there a basis for considering our efforts uniquely alien to this planet?

Keep in mind, the answer can be no - or conditional - just something to think about.

If you were some type of hyper-advanced being and found need to inhabid a planet - would you remain as you were, or would you choose to adopt a form most suitable for survival where you were?

Would a very knowledgeable and technologically advanced being, or set of beings, which only ever lived in small communal societies, be morally and/or historically equipped to lead cities and nations on the scale of Uruk, Rome, or the United States?

Would they have the insight to avoid such an effort?
