If it could be spread that easily, they would not need to shoot it into people, Just spray it all over the place. If people can spread it via indirect or direct contact, they would be wasting their time spreading it through people.

it may be worthless, it may not be. The biggest difficulty with living in a world of information overload figuring who to believe. everyone has been trained to only believe experts and authority figures, so anything that does not fit the minds perceived reality can easily be dismissed because muh sauce is spoopy.
the rando drunk could be a clown or he could be legit, his reference to it the scene going to a dark place sounds more like the artsy /alternative lifestyle crowd than a spook, so before I would dismiss it out of hand, I would check on the things he referenced.
