Five suspects — including four teenagers — arrested in connection with carjacking of Pennsylvania congresswoman

Police have arrested five suspects — four of them teenagers — in connection with the reported Wednesday carjacking of Democratic Pennsylvania Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon.

Scanlon, who supported a bill that would have made it easier for local police departments to replace police officers with mental health specialists, was reportedly forced out of her car at gunpoint in FDR Park in Philadelphia around 2:45pm on Wednesday. The alleged robbers also reportedly made off with a number of her personal effects, including her personal and government cell phones.

According to Delaware State Police, authorities tracked the blue Acura Scanlon was driving to Delaware a few hours after it was stolen, and found five individuals inside. According to WTXF-TV, the suspects — whose names have not been released due to their age — were described as teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16. Four of them are facing charges of receiving stolen property and a fifth, an unidentified 15-year-old, is facing charges of resisting arrest and criminal mischief in connection, but that individual was not charged in connection with the carjacking. However, police did determine through their investigation that a 19-year-old named Josiah Brown was involved in the carjacking, and they turned him over to the FBI for processing.

The suspects all reportedly attempted to flee from police when confronted.

According to Scanlon's office, she was not physically harmed during the incident, and she thanked a number of police agencies for working quickly to help solve the case. Philadelphia's Democratic Mayor Jim Kinney condemned the incident in a statement, saying, ""It's disheartening, and quite frankly infuriating, that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of tranquility and peace-one of Philadelphia's beautiful parks."

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement, "Armed robberies are among the most serious crimes because of the danger they pose to victims and the fear they instill in communities. My office is ready to vigorously pursue accountability when these individuals are located by police and taken into custody."

Police told WTXF that Philadelphia has seen an 80% increase in carjackings in 2021 compared to 2020.

7 Staffers In Top Pentagon Delegation Test Positive For Covid, Despite All Being Vaxxed

Despite the Pentagon recently touting that across armed services and the DoD about 97-98% of all personnel have been fully vaccinated, there's been a new Covid outbreak among the highest ranks.

"Seven staffers who traveled with Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks last week tested positive for COVID-19, the Pentagon announced," according to The Hill. She's the second highest ranking Pentagon official in the United States government, and on that trip last week had traveled to several large US military bases.

Hicks herself has so far tested negative for Covid-19, according to a follow-up statement by Pentagon press secretary John Kirby. He said that contact tracing is still ongoing.

"We are also contacting hotels, bases and support personnel who may have come in contact with the traveling party," Kirby added. The high level nature of the delegation means that the infected staff members would have come into contact with top Generals and Colonels and other officers at multiple bases and command centers.

The Hill lists that the deputy Pentagon chief visited the following: "the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, then traveled to Colorado to visit the U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Space Command, and the U.S. Space Force Space Training and Readiness Command."

"Hicks also visited the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii, the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in California; and the U.S. Strategic Command in Nebraska."

The staff members who tested positive are currently in quarantine, with Kirby underscoring upon announcing the small outbreak that "We continue to treat the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 with utmost seriousness and care."

Meanwhile, the Army, Air Force, and Marines have begun the process for discharging hundreds of service members who failed to get vaccinated by their respective branch deadlines. "The Army said it has reprimanded more than 2,700 soldiers and will begin discharge proceedings in January, while the Air Force has discharged at least 27 members," NBC recently reported.

But the deeply awkward irony remains, underscored in these latest infections among the Pentagon's highest ranks: without doubt those officers and staffers traveling with Deputy Secretary Hicks were fully vaccinated - and possibly also had received the booster as well. And yet the vaccine did not prevent infection in these cases.

Olympic diver Ian Matos dead at 32 from lung infection

Ian Matos, a Brazilian diver who competed in the 2016 Olympics, has died at 32 from a lung infection.

According to The Sun, Matos had been hospitalized for two months. He initially sought treatment for a throat infection, which ultimately spread to his stomach and lungs.

“We are profoundly saddened to have received the news of the premature death of the Olympic diver Ian Matos, aged just 32,” Brazil’s Olympic Committee said in a statement. “Team Brazil acknowledges his contribution to the evolution of the discipline. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

Matos competed in the synchronized three-meter springboard in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and earned three bronze medals at the 2010 South American Games.

Matos came out as gay in 2014, citing British diver Tom Daley as an influence.

“From a young age, I knew I was gay, but it was here that I got to live my sexuality,” he said.

Matos said that he rejected advice to stay closeted until after the 2016 Olympics. He did not want to face the pressure of keeping boyfriends secret or staying away from gay parties, and was hopeful that his diving career and sponsorship opportunities would not be adversely affected.

NATO boss responds to Moscow on bloc’s expansion

NATO has never promised anyone it would not expand, the bloc’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, as he responded to security proposals recently made by Russia.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization “has never promised not to expand,” Stoltenberg told Germany’s dpa news agency on Thursday. He added that the bloc’s founding treaty states that any European nation may join it.

The NATO head was commenting on a set of proposals made by Moscow earlier in December that would see NATO agree to curb its expansion as a form of a security guarantee for Russia.

“We cannot question NATO’s right to protect and defend all allies, nor the basic principle that every nation has the right to choose its own path,” Stoltenberg said, defending the bloc’s policy of courting former Soviet states like Ukraine. Russia’s proposals sent to NATO and the US separately suggest that relevant officials commit to ruling out the bloc’s expansion into former Soviet republics.

Stoltenberg, however, pointed to the fact that such a commitment would contravene what he called a “fundamental principle of European security that Russia has signed up to.” The NATO secretary general referred to the right of every nation to “determine its own fate,” adding that it was included in both the 1975 Helsinki Accords and the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act.

NATO’s eastward expansion has been Moscow’s gravest concern and the top thorny issue in the bloc’s relations with Moscow. Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, believe that NATO informally promised Russia that it would not expand further to the east back in the 1990s.

Venture capitalist blocks Jack Dorsey on Twitter

Silicon Valley heavyweight Marc Andreessen has blocked Jack Dorsey on Twitter – the social media platform the latter co-founded – for his comments on Web3.

The ban came after Dorsey criticized the venture capital industry and made several comments about the firm Andreessen co-founded, Andreessen Horowitz.

“I’m officially banned from Web3,” Dorsey tweeted on Wednesday, alongside a screenshot showing he had been blocked by Andreessen.

This week, Dorsey expressed a series of views on Web3, a new iteration of the internet that incorporates decentralization based on blockchain technology. The entrepreneur said Web3 would be owned by rich venture capitalists such as Andreessen instead of “the people.”

Andreessen, who made billions from early bets on companies such as Facebook, has now backed a number of firms that are working on technologies that could one day underpin Web3.

“You don’t own Web3,” Dorsey tweeted on Tuesday. “The VCs and their LPs do. It will never escape their incentives. It’s ultimately a centralized entity with a different label.”

Unlike Web 2.0 where data and content are centralized in the hands of Big Tech companies, Web3 is premised on the idea of decentralization, and incorporates the use of blockchain technologies such as cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens.
