Not true anon, Religion is a dialog with subconscious/unconscious. It is a necessity that keeps people sane. And the notion. It's a hack in our biology to not need an alpha chimp to lead us because the leader is within. It's critical in a free country for people to voluntarily self-regulate.

People are corrupt in religion in the same way that some doctors are corrupt in hospitals. Doesn't mean hospitals are bad. Some are, but not all. We still need hospitals. Especially when times get hard.

In spiritually hard times people need religion.

No doubt, but the notion that he should be free and uncontrolled by man in the first place, where does that value come from?

I can say how it manifested once, it manifested in Christianity, as well as in the Tao Te Ching.

That's why these beliefs/philosophies emphasize humility as well, but it can sometimes be implemented unperfectly.

But if a society gives up the notion of a higher or divine reality all together, there's no self-regulation, no humility, and thus a police state or totalitarian dynasty is needed to fill in that archetypical gap, or void for a higher power, and so goes the freedom as well.

It's better to get individuals to govern themselves without a legislative theocracy, but an internal subjective theocracy.

And in order for that to properly work in conjunction with the Golden Rule
