Those most trusted in Thailand?

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police raided four Buddhist temples on Thursday, arresting several prominent monks and worshippers in the year's biggest such operation amid a crackdown on illegal financial dealings by temples.

The raids are the military government's latest bid to reform Buddhism, which is followed by more than 90 percent of Thailand's population of 69 million, but whose image has been tarnished by money and sex scandals involving monks.

"This is the investigation stage… it will all come down to facts and evidence," police official Thitiraj Nhongharnpitak, of the Central Investigation Bureau, which is investigating the monks, told reporters.

The Daily Mail newspaper has today claimed there is a £5.6million plan to thwart Brexit.

Leaked papers apparently show that a pro-Remain group has launched a six-month plan to stop Britain leaving the EU.

Backed by billionaire financier George Soros, Best for Britain aims to spend nearly £6million on the campaign, according to the documents.

They allegedly reveal that the group will contradict whatever final agreement Theresa May strikes with Brussels – arguing it is 'not what we voted for'.

Best for Britain wants to persuade MPs to vote down the Prime Minister's deal in October.

The plans include using trade unions to change Labour's stance on Brexit.

It will also see an advertising blitz, social media, a speaking tour by leading Labour Remainers and local campaigning.

Best for Britain has amassed a £2.4million already but is asking wealthy donors for £3.2million more, saying: 'We have less than six months to stop Brexit.'

The 26-page plan reveals that:

Best for Britain will claim leaving the EU will put national security at risk;

Remain activists will blame Brexit for funding cuts at local councils;

They will also claim Leave voters were rejecting Westminster and not Brussels.

It is understood that Best for Britain started sending the documents to potential donors over the past few days.

Former Cabinet minister Owen Paterson said they reveal how far some Remainers would go to overturn the result of the referendum of June 2016.

‘'The cynical plan to manipulate the British voter and stop Brexit has now been laid bare,' added the Conservative MP.

'Leave voters up and down the country will be disgusted that George Soros thinks he can spend his fortune to determine the direction of our great country. Most Remain voters too just want us to get on with it.

'My colleagues in Parliament, whether they were for Leave or Remain, must denounce this brazen attempt to undermine our democracy.

Those MPs who are seeking to dilute or delay Brexit must now admit that their meaningful vote is really just their plan to stop Brexit – as this document sets out unambiguously.'

Richard Tice, of the pro-Brexit group Leave Means Leave, said: 'George Soros, the billionaire who does not live in the UK, will stop at nothing with his elitist friends to stop Brexit, deceitfully masking their plans as a people's vote.

'Shamefully, they want to deny the poorest in our society from benefiting the most from Brexit.'

Best for Britain was launched last April ahead of the snap general election.

It was fronted by Gina Miller, who took the Government to court over Brexit, but she quit earlier this year after becoming uncomfortable with the group's tactics.

It emerged in February that Best for Britain had accepted a £400,000 donation from Mr Soros, the Hungarian-born financier who bet against sterling on Black Wednesday in 1992 – earning him one billion dollars. …..

North Korea demolishes what it says is nuclear test site.

PUNGGYE-RI, North Korea (AP) — North Korea has carried out what it says is the demolition of its nuclear test site in the presence of foreign journalists.

The demolition happened Thursday at the site deep in the mountains of the North's sparsely populated northeast.

The planned closing was previously announced by leader Kim Jong Un ahead of his planned summit with U.S. President Donald Trump next month.

The North's decision to close the site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit. Even so, it is not an irreversible move and would need to be followed by many more significant measures to meet Trump's demands for denuclearization.

The North did not invite international inspectors to the ceremony, which limits its value as a concession.

Security troops on US nuclear missile base took LSD

BY ROBERT BURNS

WASHINGTON (AP) — One airman said he felt paranoia. Another marveled at the vibrant colors. A third admitted, "I absolutely just loved altering my mind."

Meet service members entrusted with guarding nuclear missiles that are among the most powerful in America's arsenal. Air Force records obtained by The Associated Press show they bought, distributed and used the hallucinogen LSD and other mind-altering illegal drugs as part of a ring that operated undetected for months on a highly secure military base in Wyoming. After investigators closed in, one airman deserted to Mexico.

"Although this sounds like something from a movie, it isn't," said Capt. Charles Grimsley, the lead prosecutor of one of several courts martial.

A slipup on social media by one airman enabled investigators to crack the drug ring at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in March 2016, details of which are reported here for the first time. Fourteen airmen were disciplined. Six of them were convicted in courts martial of LSD use or distribution or both.

None of the airmen was accused of using drugs on duty. Yet it's another blow to the reputation of the Air Force's nuclear missile corps, which is capable of unleashing hell in the form of Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs. The corps has struggled at times with misbehavior, mismanagement and low morale.

Although seen by some as a backwater of the U.S. military, the missile force has returned to the spotlight as President Donald Trump has called for strengthening U.S. nuclear firepower and exchanged threats last year with North Korea. The administration's nuclear strategy calls for hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending in coming decades.

The service members accused of involvement in the LSD ring were from the 90th Missile Wing, which operates one-third of the 400 Minuteman 3 missiles that stand "on alert" 24/7 in underground silos scattered across the northern Great Plains.

Documents obtained by the AP over the past two years through the Freedom of Information Act tell a sordid tale of off-duty use of LSD, cocaine and other drugs in 2015 and 2016 by airmen who were supposed to be held to strict behavioral standards because of their role in securing the weapons.

"It's another black eye for the Air Force — for the ICBM force in particular," says Stephen Schwartz, an independent consultant and nuclear expert.
