Armed intruder arrested at Windsor Castle as Queen celebrates Christmas

 

An armed man was arrested after attempting to break into Windsor Castle where the Queen was celebrating Christmas with her family.

 

Police said the intruder was carrying an offensive weapon but did not break into any buildings on Christmas Day morning.

 

The suspect was being held in custody and the royals had been informed, Thames Valley police said.

 

A 19-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon, they added.

 

Officers from Thames Valley and the Metropolitan police responded to a security breach at around 8.30am within the grounds of the castle in Berkshire.

'Dallas Buyers Club' director Jean-Marc Vallée dead at 58

 

Director and producer Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for directing the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies” and whose 2013 drama “Dallas Buyers Club” earned multiple Oscar nominations, has died. He was 58.

 

His representative Bumble Ward said Sunday that Vallée died suddenly in his cabin outside Quebec City, Canada, over the weekend.

 

Vallée was acclaimed for his naturalistic approach to filmmaking, directing stars including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal over the past decade.

 

He directed Emily Blunt in 2009's “The Young Victoria” and became a sought-after name in Hollywood after “Dallas Buyers Club,” featuring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, earned six Academy Awards nominations, including best picture.

Heavy storms in Brazil: two dams break after continuous rain

 

For weeks there have been repeated storms in Bahia, Brazil. According to media reports, a total of 18 people died and around 20,000 were left homeless. At the weekend, two dams can no longer withstand the water masses.

 

After long, heavy rain, around 60 places in the Brazilian state of Bahia were under water on Sunday, according to the governor. Two dams broke at the weekend, as the administrations of the affected communities in the east of the country announced. On social media, they called on residents around the dams to get to safety.

 

People would be rescued with helicopters and boats, wrote the Governor of Bahia, Rui Costa, on Twitter on Sunday. “The priority right now is to save lives.” On Saturday, the Brazilian government sent emergency services, planes and equipment to help those trapped by the water masses.
