COVID-19 is airborne and out in the community. Here's how good ventilation can make public spaces safer

Masks are again required in many indoor spaces to slow the spread of COVID-19, but not all masks protect against airborne viruses and they are not required in all public places.

Key points:

People with a COVID-19 infection can exhale particles and droplets that contain the virus

Mixing fresh air with the air inside a building helps lower the risk of transmission

Current building standards do not address the risk of airborne infection, an occupational hygienist says

Like other virus variants, Omicron can be exhaled by a person with an infection, carried through the air and inhaled by someone else, causing them to become infected.

Some public places are riskier than others, but there are measures business owners can take to improve the air quality in their premises and lower the risk of customers and staff becoming infected.

We took two workplace safety experts to indoor spaces to find out what makes a place less of a COVID-19 risk.

Risk in retail spaces

As the owner-operator of a small plant and gift shop in Cronulla, Sydney, Andy Gray is a one-man band and cannot risk having to close if he or a customer catches COVID-19.

"No-one wants to be the spot that other people are getting infected at," he said.

Mr Gray said he has had no advice from government sources about keeping his business COVID-19 safe, so was grateful to get some tips from occupational hygienist Andrew Orfanos.

"It's all about reducing the risk," Mr Orfanos said.

With staff spending many hours in a shop, any particles they exhale can build up in the air. If they had COVID-19, it could be a risk to any visitors.

Vaccinated staff have less chance of catching COVID-19 and less chance of passing it on, which helps protect customers.

However, customers with an infection are less of a risk because they only spend about five to 10 minutes in the shop.

"That's something in your favour," Mr Orfanos told Mr Gray.

Man taken to hospital after 'sizeable' explosion destroys Canberra shops

A man has been taken to hospital after an explosion police say destroyed "several" Canberra shops and damaged others.

IT professional Mushtaq Ahmad said he was just 150–200m away from Turkish Kebab and Pizza on Rae Street, Belconnen — where he had planned to buy bread — when CCTV showed a huge blast tear off the roof and send parts of the building flying.

"All these debris (were) just flying in the air," he told 9News.com.au, describing a "massive bang".

"And for a moment I didn't know like what happened and then when I went there, I saw the fire was engulfing and there was a massive fire inside the shop."

ACT Policing Detective Acting Inspector Emily McCallum said a man was taken to hospital after the blast about 7.30pm on Monday.

"It is in a very well-used area," she said.

"There are a lot of local takeaway places, service stations, things like that.

Mr Ahmad's footage from the scene shows a fire burning in the building, part of which has been reduced to an empty shell, and what appears to be significant damage to surrounding shops.

The Belconnen man said he considered himself "very lucky" not to have arrived earlier.

"If I was happened to be like, within two minutes, not sure what's gonna what would happen here," he said.

ACT Fire and Rescue Commander Brett Slater said fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze and carried out a "primary search" of the building.

Former Continental CEO Slams Fauci For 'Too Much Misinformation' And 'Chicken Little' Response To Omicron

Former Continental Airlines CEO Gordon Bethune says he's stopped listening to the nation's top Covid-19 czar, Dr. Anthony Fauci, because of "too much misinformation."

"I want to be a good CNBC contributor, but I don't listen to Dr. Fauci anymore. It's just too much misinformation," he told "Power Lunch."

"If you flew the airplane how Dr. Anthony Fauci manages this crisis we'd all be dead," he added, calling the government response to Omicron "chicken little."

It started with "the sky is falling… we overreacted. I thought we were getting back to the centerline and getting normal, but a 10-day Covid quarantine really takes the reserve pilot out of the picture. He's got it. He's locked up. He can't come in. The reserve pilot, and the reserve dispatcher, the reserve mechanics…" he added.

Bethune's comments come on the heels of Fauci's proclamation that American travelers should expect masks forever on commercial air travel (despite vaccination status).

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, who has come to be hailed as a national hero by Liberals who simplistically like to repeat the mantra "trust the science" told ABC’s This Week in a recent interview that removing masks on an airplane is "not something we should even be considering."

Iran Demands The US Allow Crude Exports As Nuclear Talks Resume

Over the weekend the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization vowed that his country wouldn't enrich uranium over 60 percent, even if talks in Vienna toward a restored nuclear deal in the end fail. At the same time National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has said the US is losing its patience in the talks, setting a deadline for when negotiations would end. Sullivan said the deadline will come "within weeks" if there's no agreement.

With talks in in Vienna resuming Monday, Iran is now spotlighting oil sanctions, insisting that the US and its allies make promises to allow the Islamic Republic to export its crude. New Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian under the conservative regime of President Ebrahim Raisi laid out that lifting sanctions on this crucial sector must reach the "point where Iranian oil is being sold easily and without any barriers and its money arrives in Iran’s bank accounts."

He stipulated that he expects this week's round of talks, which is the eighth, to focus on Iran's sanctions-hit oil industry. Amirabdollahian said that for any progress to be made, Iran should "be able to enjoy full economic concessions under the nuclear deal." He added that "Guarantee and verification (of the removal of sanctions) are among topics that we have focused on." The talks include signatories to the JCPOA including Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and indirectly the United States.

Talks will center around an agreed upon joint draft document negotiated from previously this month:

"We’ve set aside the June 2021 document and have agreed a new joint document and talks will begin today around that document," state-run IRNA quoted Amirabdollahian as saying in reference to a text that was reached at the end of the sixth round of talks in the Austrian capital.

And separately, a statement from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh on Monday said Tehran would find it "intolerable" for the West's demands for compliance to go anything beyond the original 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) brokered under Obama, given it was Washington that unilaterally pulled out under Trump in 2018.

The US side, meanwhile, has continued warning that contingency options are on the table, with days ago Special Envoy for Iran, Rob Malley, saying in an interview that the Biden administration is ready in the near-term future to declare that the JCPOA is "no more".

"At some point in the not-so-distant future, we will have to conclude that the JCPOA is no more, and we'd have to negotiate a wholly new different deal, and of course we'd go through a period of escalating crisis," Malley said.

He said that talks were progressing too slowly, if at all: "If they continue at their current pace, we have some weeks left but not much more than that, at which point, I think, the conclusion will be that there's no deal to be revived," he stipulated.

Israeli Army Rule Allowing Shooting of Stone-throwers Will be Applied to Palestinians, Not Jews

The Israeli military has changed its rules of engagement to allow its forces to fire on Palestinians who have thrown stones or firebombs even when they no longer pose any danger. The new rule is a sop to Israeli settlers, the IDF’s clientele.

From now on, Israel Defense Force militants may fire on Palestinians who have thrown stones or firebombs even when they no longer pose any danger. Or, in the IDF parlance, when they’re escaping. These changes in the IDF’s Rules of Engagement (RoE) were exposed by Roee Sharon of Channel 13 on Sunday (Hebrew). This change requires three comments.

First of all, the timing. Sharon notes that the RoE were changed within the last few weeks – but the IDF allowed the publishing of the information only on Sunday. Why? Because of the crisis in the illegal outpost of Homesh, situated on the land of the village of Burqa, near Nablus. Following the killing of a settler, Yehuda Dimentman, and a wave of settler violence, hundreds of settlers attempted to reach the outpost, and clashed with the army, wounding one soldier by running him over (Hebrew).

The army knows it will likely have to remove the outpost soon, so it bribes the settlers: Here, you see, we made shooting Palestinians easier!

An interjection is essential here. On Saturday, the IDF militants shot 15 Burqa residents, protesting the mass emigration of settlers to their land, with rubber-coated bullets, and caused some 50 of them to inhale CS gas; on Sunday, the IDF militants again shot eight Burqa residents with rubber-coated bullets, and again caused some 50 of them to inhale CS gas. Needless to say, the Israeli media didn’t cover those incidents.

The IDF has a record of allowing the injuring of Palestinians in order to mollify settlers. In 2015, then-Brigadier General Tamir Yadai, then the commander of the AYOSH Division (West bank, but he’s been promoted since) told (Hebrew) the settlers of Halamish that he changed the RoE, saying:

“We’ve been a bit tougher with the people around here. Where we used to fire gas grenades or rubber [coated bullets], we now shoot Ruger [bullets] or live fire.”

Contrary to what Yadai implied, the Ruger 0.22 fires rounds which, while less powerful than normal ammunition, are still very much lethal. Note that it was to settlers, Yadai’s true clientele, that he announced the order for the use of excessive force – so as to mollify them.

Dr Scott Jensen Sounds Alarm on New Medical Surveillance Regime

“Speaking truth in the face of controlling power brokers always matters…”

On Christmas Eve, Dr Scott Jensen, a general practitioner and candidate for Governor of Minnesota, released a video explaining how he has been targeted by his state’s medical board with an investigation for the FIFTH time. The move by the state appears to be political in nature, and is designed to harass and deter Jensen from continuing to help his patients. His crimes, according to the state: “spreading misinformation”, not being vaccinated, recommending children not wear masks in school, “promoting natural immunity,” and prescribing Ivermectin, What’s worse, his faceless, nameless accusers are asking him to handover the private medical records of his patients who have been given Ivermectin. Dr Jensen warns that this is a dangerous precedent, and could be the shape of things to come.

“If it can happen to me, it can happen to you. It’s happening to you right now,” said Dr Jensen. Watch:

More Than 150,000 Americans Killed By Covid Vaccines Says Columbia University Study

COVID vaccination and age-stratified all-cause mortality risk

Accurate estimates of COVID vaccine-induced severe adverse event and death rates are critical for risk-benefit ratio analyses of vaccination and boosters against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in different age groups. However, existing surveillance studies are not designed to reliably estimate life-threatening event or vaccine-induced fatality rates (VFR). Here, regional variation in vaccination rates was used to predict all-cause mortality and non-COVID deaths in subsequent time periods using two independent, publicly available datasets from the US and Europe (month-and week-level resolutions, respectively). Vaccination correlated negatively with mortality 6-20 weeks post-injection, while vaccination predicted all-cause mortality 0-5 weeks post-injection in almost all age groups and with an age-related temporal pattern consistent with the US vaccine rollout. Results from fitted regression slopes (p<0.05 FDR corrected) suggest a US national average VFR of 0.04% and higher VFR with age (VFR=0.004% in ages 0-17 increasing to 0.06% in ages >75 years), and 146K to 187K vaccine-associated US deaths between February and August, 2021. Notably, adult vaccination increased ulterior mortality of unvaccinated young (<18, US; <15, Europe). Comparing our estimate with the CDC-reported VFR (0.002%) suggests VAERS deaths are underreported by a factor of 20, consistent with known VAERS under-ascertainment bias. Comparing our age-stratified VFRs with published age-stratified coronavirus infection fatality rates (IFR) suggests the risks of COVID vaccines and boosters outweigh the benefits in children, young adults and older adults with low occupational risk or previous coronavirus exposure. We discuss implications for public health policies related to boosters, school and workplace mandates, and the urgent need to identify, develop and disseminate diagnostics and treatments for life-altering vaccine injuries.

Here are some quotes from the paper:

Results from fitted regression slopes (p<0.05 FDR corrected) suggest a US national average VFR of 0.04% and higher VFR with age (VFR=0.004% in ages 0-17 increasing to 0.06% in ages >75 years), and 146K to 187K vaccine-associated US deaths between February and August, 2021.

Comparing our estimate with the CDC-reported VFR (0.002%) suggests VAERS deaths are underreported by a factor of 20, consistent with known VAERS under-ascertainment bias

Comparing our age-stratified VFRs with published age-stratified coronavirus infection fatality rates (IFR) suggests the risks of COVID vaccines and boosters outweigh the benefits in children, young adults and older adults with low occupational risk or previous coronavirus exposure.

Interestingly, our estimates of 133K to 187K vaccine-related deaths are very similar to recent, independent estimates based off of US VAERS data through August 28th, 2021 by Rose and Crawford (11).

In other words, these researchers found numbers similar to what we found, within a factor of 2. They agree that over 150,000 people have been killed by the vaccines so far. This is more than 3 times the number killed in combat in the Vietnam war; a war which lasted for nearly 20 years.

Pharmaceutical industry payments to leaders of professional medical associations in Australia

These findings raise concerns about industry influence on clinical practice and policy.

Professional medical associations (PMAs) shape clinical practice through their role in medical education, clinical guideline development, health policy, advocacy and research.1 Many PMAs receive pharmaceutical industry funding, generating concern about industry influence on their activities.1,2 However, the receipt of industry payments by PMA leaders – respected members of their profession involved in defining professional and clinical norms – are often overlooked, despite the potential impact on the direction of the association and practices of its members. Accumulating evidence suggests that financial relationships between pharmaceutical companies and medical practitioners may lead to poorer-quality prescribing, increased healthcare costs and bias within medical education, clinical practice guidelines and research.3,4 These findings have prompted calls for independence of PMAs and their leaders from the pharmaceutical industry.1

Australia’s pharmaceutical industry has a self-regulatory system of transparency reporting. Member companies of Medicines Australia, the pharmaceutical industry trade organisation, submit reports identifying healthcare professionals who receive payments for services or in support of medical education, including travel, accommodation and/or conference registration fees. These reports were used to examine payments to leaders of PMAs associated with two prevalent chronic conditions: cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

A hidden web of policy influence: The pharmaceutical industry’s engagement with UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Groups

Relationship #1: Conflicts of interest through direct pharmaceutical industry payments

Thirty (10.8%) of the 277 donors providing direct payments were pharmaceutical companies. Of a total 1,066 direct payments from all donors with a reported value of £6,268,955.0, industry provided 129 (12.1%) worth £858,647.95 (13.7%). Ten (33.3%) of the thirty drug companies provided £534,332.75 (62.2% of industry’s total contribution), indicating high levels of donor concentration (S1 Table provides a list of companies and their payments).

Relationship #2: Conflicts of interest through indirect pharmaceutical industry payments

Sixteen (19.5%) of the 82 donors making indirect payments were pharmaceutical companies. Of a total 247 contributions to 111 indirect payments worth £1,014,459.9 from all donors, the pharmaceutical industry made 69 (27.9%) contributions towards 39 (35.1%) indirect payments worth £352,697.9 (34.8%). As with direct payments, indirect payments were concentrated by donors, with the top three drug company donors providing over half of the industry’s indirect payments (see S2 Table for a list of companies). Different companies prioritised direct and indirect payments. Overall, industry provided more direct payments than indirect.

Relationship #3: Payments from patient organisations with conflicts of interest

In addition to the pharmaceutical industry’s payments, the APPG Register reported 50 APPGs receiving 304 payments (all in-kind) worth £986,055.0 from 57 patient organisations which feature as payment recipients in pharmaceutical industry payment disclosures. The industry-funded patient organisations which gave payments to APPGs received £27,883,556.30 across 1,965 payments from 65 pharmaceutical companies between 2012–2018. Table 5 provides a list of the top industry-funded patient organisations ordered by the value of payments they made to APPGs, alongside the number and value of the payments they received from industry.
