WATCH: Parliament on fire in Cape Town

The building of the national assembly in Cape Town, South Africa caught fire on Sunday morning, with flames and black smoke seen from far away.

Flames have been spreading in the building from the fire, which started around 5am, local media reports, citing officials. It has spread to the roof, according to mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.

The official said the blaze is so bad there already are “reports of cracks in some walls.” Dozens of firefighters who initially rushed to the scene requested more resources.

“The bitumen on the roof is even melting, an indication of the intense heat,” the spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, told local News24. He also said there are fears the building could fall.

It is believed that the fire started in an office on the third floor. CCTV footage is now being reviewed to determine the cause.

The original building of the Houses of Parliament of South Africa dates back to the end of the 19th century. There are also two additional sections, the newest of which was built in the 1980s.

people from NK often flee to SK - in this case it's the other way - fleeing from SK into NK:

Suspected defector crosses into North Korea

The South Korean military has reported that a person broke through a barbed-wire fence to sneak into the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas before eventually crossing into North Korean territory.

“We launched the operation to capture the person in the DMZ [demilitarized zone],” an anonymous official from the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told Yonhap. “But due to various geographical conditions, including the mountain terrain, we failed to do so.”

The evasive individual appeared to be on course for his destination, North Korea, when he was last seen by the South Korean military around 10:40pm on Saturday.

Seoul said it informed Pyongyang about the incident through a military hotline, and has launched an investigation to determine the defector’s identity.

While there have been numerous defections from North Korea to South Korea over the years, cases in which South Korean citizens flee to the North are extremely rare, but not unheard of.

In 2019, the son of a former South Korean foreign minister followed in the footsteps of his parents by defecting to the North, vowing to devote his life to the cause of reunification.

BlackBerry phones to lose all functionality

The once-pioneering devices will no longer be guaranteed dependable, the manufacturer has announced

BlackBerry, whose smartphones attracted a devoted following for features like built-in keyboards and high security even as Apple and Google gradually poached its customers, is finally giving up the ghost, the company has revealed.

Any phones or tablets running BlackBerry operating systems “will no longer reliably function” starting January 4, the company declared in a recent press release. That rules out phone calls, texts, data use, SMS connections, or emergency 911 calls.

Specifically, while more recent BlackBerry devices running Android operating systems will continue to function, smartphones and other devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10, or the company’s tablet operating system, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1, will cease to operate with any degree of reliability.

Perhaps fittingly given that BlackBerry’s initial attractions included its comparatively beefy security profile, parent company BlackBerry Limited has switched to selling cybersecurity software and internet of things systems.

The company attempted to stage a comeback in 2013 with the BlackBerry Z10, poaching a significant chunk of new customers from Apple and Google in the UK and Canada, but the win apparently didn’t last. The final BlackBerry smartphone to be released into the wild was the Leap, which debuted in 2015, and the company has gradually wound down its support for existing hardware since then, shutting down its BlackBerry Messenger service in 2019.

Another comeback attempt scheduled for 2020 never materialized, despite the announcement of a licensing partnership with OnwardMobility and Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile Limited. The new device was supposed to resemble the old-school BlackBerry with its built-in keyboard, run on Google’s Android OS, and come with 5G capability. Given recent privacy scandals regarding both Google and Apple, one might think the market for a privacy-centric smartphone would be stronger than ever, but OnwardMobility has not shared any updates regarding the BlackBerry project since last January.

the most important message of their press release is:

"As a reminder, the legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, will no longer be available after January 4, 2022. As of this date, devices running these legacy services and software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer reliably function, including for data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functionality."
