Matthew 11

New King James Version

John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus

11 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.

2 And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he [a]sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”

4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

7 As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written:

‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,

Who will prepare Your way before You.’

11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

16 “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, 17 and saying:

‘We played the flute for you,

And you did not dance;

We mourned to you,

And you did not [b]lament.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [c]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her [d]children.”

Woe to the Impenitent Cities

20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, who[e] are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”

Jesus Gives True Rest

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. 26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am [f]gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

John 16

New King James Version

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do [a]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when [b]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [c]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [d]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. 28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his [e]own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you [f]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Power Of Faith Filled Words

If we want to start seeing the power of God manifest in our lives, we will have to start paying attention to what we say. Words have power—more than any of us realize, but we often speak them as though they are meaningless. Because of that, most believers at one time or another have been hung by their tongue.

Matthew 12:36-37 says,

“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

“Every idle word” simply means nonproductive. These are words that you speak but don’t believe. For example, you might say, “I’m dying to see my grandchildren.” You really don’t mean you’re dying, but you say it anyway to emphasize the importance of the relationship.

Every time you say things that you don’t really mean, it begins to numb your heart. Unconsciously, each idle word is making it just a little bit harder to believe what you say will actually come to pass when you mean it and it really counts.

Jesus certainly understood the power of words, and He used them to change the natural things around him.

Mark 11:13-14 and 20-24 say,

“And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it…. And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

I can almost hear the inflections in Peter’s voice when he said, “The fig tree You cursed is withered away.” I am sure it communicated surprise and disbelief. And when Jesus replied to Peter, it probably was not in a monotone voice. It was more like, “PETER! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?” Jesus was amazed at his unbelief. He was saying, “It shouldn’t shock you to see this tree withered. Have faith in God.”

Then He went on to explain that this wasn’t limited to a fig tree. He used a mountain as an example, but I believe it could apply to anything. He was making the point that if we say it with our mouths and believe it in our hearts, we can have what we say.

He also made it very clear who qualified to use words in this way: He said, “whosoever shall say.” Are you a whosoever? Because if you are and if you’re breathing, then you’re qualified, and your words can affect the natural as well as the spiritual world.

Jesus used the word “say” or “saith” three times in verse 23. He was making it clear that words have power. But He also said to have faith in God. The words that have power are words that are filled with faith. And it’s important to understand that the faith they’re filled with is not your human faith.

Galatians 2:20 says,

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

I’m aware that the NIV says “faith in the son of God.” But when you study this out, it becomes very clear that it is talking about the very faith of God that He placed in you when you were born again. In fact, you can’t even be born again by your own faith. Romans 10:17 say that faith comes by the Word, and 1 Peter 1:23 says you are born again by the Word of God.

If you can’t even believe for salvation with our human faith, how could we possible use it for other things like healing or prosperity? It’s super important that you understand this. If you don’t know this, you will always be looking to others to pray for you. You’ll always think that they have more faith than you do, and because of that, God will act on your behalf when they pray. That’s wrong, and it’s the reason many Christians are looking to man instead of God for their answers.

Romans 12:3 says,

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” (underline mine).

Think of it like using a ladle to dish up soup. If you used the same ladle every time—and God did—every person will get the same amount of soup. It’s the measure of soup. You have the measure of faith. No born-again believer has more faith than any other; some just do a better job of appropriating what they have been given.

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” And verse 3 says, “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

This scripture is not symbolic; God actually created everything with words. He spoke creation into existence, and the substance of His faith manifested into what we can now see. The Word of God has unlimited power. Each word is like a little capsule filled with faith waiting for us believers to release it in our hearts and speak it with our mouths.

Everything we see was created by words, and it is the very Word of God that holds the universe together (Heb. 1:3). Therefore, everything we see will respond to faith-filled words. They have to respond because words are the parent force.

Proverbs 23:7 says that as you think in your heart, so are you, and Luke 6:45 says that what you speak comes from the abundance of your heart. In other words, the way that you think controls the way that you talk. And if you understand that your words have power, then you understand why you can be hung by your tongue.

The only reason every one of us isn’t dead from the many idle words we have spoken is because we haven’t believed every word with our hearts. Thank God that our words have to be mixed with faith and that we have to believe them from our hearts. But this should help us see a powerful truth. If we believe we are going to be sick or if we believe that we will always be poor, and then confess that with our mouths, we will get what we believe.

On the other hand, what happens when we take the faith-filled words of God and plant them in our hearts where they can take root and grow? Everything changes—no longer are we just saying “I believe that I’m healed” or “I am prosperous,” but we believe it and the faith of God is then released through those words.

Proverbs 18:21 reads,

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

It not only says life but death as well. It’s sad to say, but most of the words being communicated today are negative words—words that do not bring about abundant life but cause more problems.

In most of what I teach, I talk about the words that we speak. But it has been thirty-plus years since I have taught on this as a standalone subject, and I am sure we no longer have tapes of those messages. So, last year on my trip to Europe, I taught a new series called The Power of Faith-Filled Words. It’s a powerful series that will completely change your attitude about the words you speak. More importantly, if you will get it in your heart, you will learn that words can change your life now as well as your future.

Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. James 3:4-5

What does this verse mean? How is the tongue like the rudder of a ship?

The tongue is like the rudder of a ship in that it steers a person’s life in the same way the rudder steers a ship. Even in the midst of fierce winds, the rudder is powerful enough to steer the ship. In the same way, no matter the circumstances, the tongue is powerful enough to steer a person’s life.

The Bible is saying that your tongue is designed to steer your life, just like the rudder steers a ship. This is confirmed all over Scripture. God designed humans to be speaking spirits just like Him. We use our tongue in the same way God does- to set things in motion.

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. Genesis 1:3

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Genesis 1:6

Take a moment and read Genesis 1. God created the universe and everything in it with His words. When God created the earth, He used His words. He spoke and then He saw it. This is how God created everything! We can use our words in the same way.

What is the Power of the Tongue?

Do you want to change the direction your life is headed? Change the words you are speaking! God has given us the ability to steer our life in the direction we want it to go by using our tongues. Our words are very powerful.

Even when a massive ship is facing strong winds and massive waves, the direction the rudder is positioned holds more power over the ship than the winds.

In the same way, even when it seems as though all circumstances are against you, your tongue holds more power than the circumstances. You can position your words in the way you want to go, just like a rudder does. In fact, even the power of life and death are in the tongue.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21

Your tongue can steer your life in the direction you want to go. As you begin to speak where you want to go, slowly but surely, you will get there. This is the way you are designed to function. This is how faith works. You believe it in your heart, and speak it out of your mouth.

And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, 2 Corinthians 4:13

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10

But this principle can also work against you. If you are a person who says things like “I always get sick, nothing good ever happens to me, my children hate me, etc”, then you are likely seeing those things as reality in your life.

If you want to change your circumstances, change the words that are coming out of your mouth. If you want to see good days, learn to choose carefully the words you are speaking.

Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Psalm 34: 12-13

How is the Tongue Like a Bit in a Horse’s Mouth?

The book of James also compares the tongue to a bit in a horse’s mouth.

For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. James 3:2-3

This verse is saying that we can bridle our entire bodies with our tongue in the same way that a horse is bridled by the bit in their mouth. That’s how powerful words are! Just like when a bit is put in a horse’s mouth and controls the direction of the animal, so can the tongue control the entire body.

The horse can only go in the direction his head goes, so by putting a bit in a horse’s mouth, it allows the rider to control where the body of the animal goes. Our tongues are designed by God to work this way as well. Our bodies will go in the direction our words go.

Words have the power to affect our bodies, our emotions, and our actions. Our bodies are designed to respond to the words of our mouth. Jesus instructed us in Mark 11:23 to speak to our problems, to speak to our bodies, and to speak to circumstances. Everything responds to faith-filled words.

For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Mark 11:23

This verse says we are to speak to the mountain. The mountain symbolizes our problem or the thing we want removed. Mountains can be sicknesses, lack, confusion, or contrary circumstances.

Jesus modeled this for us. He spoke to bodies, spoke to sickness, spoke to trees, spoke to winds, spoke to demons, and even spoke to dead bodies!

Most people speak to God about their problems. This verse is saying we need to speak directly to our problems.

We should say things like “Sickness, leave my body in the Name of Jesus” and “Body, you be strong and healthy in Jesus Name.” We are supposed to use the authority Jesus gave us through our words and command the problem to be removed .

How is the Tongue Like a Fire?

The book of James also says that the tongue is like a little fire which can start a massive forest fire. It only takes a small match of fire to start a forest fire that can devastate hundreds of thousands of acres, destroying everything in its path.

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. James 3:5-6

This verse is warning us that just like a small fire, our tongues are a small member, but they have great power. The tongue is like a little match that can set a whole forest on fire.

Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death itself is in the power of the tongue. Before a person is born again and filled with the power of God to enable them to speak words of life, man’s tongue tends toward death.

Naturally, people’s words tend to be full of deceit and wickedness, and they defile our entire bodies. Just listen to an unbeliever talk for a while. Their mouth is usually full of negativity, death, slander, and cursing.

The devil has trained humanity to speak death constantly. How many times do you hear people say “I love them to death” or “that’ll be the death of me”?!

Our words cause physical problems in our bodies. When you talk, your body is listening. You can talk yourself sick. But, on the positive side, you can bridle your body with your tongue (James 3:2) and talk yourself well.

Our words also affect the course of nature. Our words have physical effects in the world around us. Everything in the universe is made out of words, and everything responds to words.

When we say “Nothing ever works out for me,” then our hearts start the process of bringing those words to pass. Your heart is like soil, it will bring forth whatever seeds are planted in it (See Mark 4, Matthew 13). When we say things like “If I wash my car, I know it’s going to rain,” we are actually saying we are cursed and our hearts begin to believe it and bring it to pass.

This verse in James also reveals that the negative words that set nature on fire are inspired by hell. Satan inspires our words of death just as God inspires our words of life. It is so important that we learn to control our tongues through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God gave dominion over all the animal creation to man (Genesis 1:28), and man has exercised that authority to subdue every kind of animal. But without the Holy Spirit, it is impossible for a human to tame his own tongue.

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:7-8

Why Should Christians Control Their Tongue?

No one can conquer their words on their own. But through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can. Without being filled with the Holy Spirit, man’s tongues are evil and full of poison.

But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:8

You will create an atmosphere of blessing or cursing with our words. They either keep you enveloped in the grace of God’s blessings, or they surround you with the curse. The angels of God listen to the Word of God spoken out of your mouth, to perform what you have spoken.

Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word. Psalm 103:20

Jesus also taught on the power of our words. He said that people who believe that the words they say will come to pass, without doubting in their hearts, will have what they say (Mark 11:23).

People who don’t understand the power of words are constantly saying things that they don’t really mean, and they train their bodies not to believe or take their words seriously. Therefore, when it comes time to rebuke sickness or command healing, their bodies don’t respond the way they should.

Christians should always be seeking to control their tongue. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can train your tongue to only speak words of truth and life. Then, you will begin to see your life go in the direction of your words.

Those who refuse to control their words are playing with fire and releasing destruction in their lives, just like the Bible warns us.

A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 18:7

You are snared by the words of your mouth; you are taken by the words of your mouth. Proverbs 6:2

But the mouth of the upright will deliver them. Proverbs 12:6

Start controlling your tongue by speaking the word of God out loud. This will train your heart and tongue to speak truth, even in contrary circumstances. Start to think about the words you speak, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you speak only words that line up with His truth. Your life will get better and better and you will begin to see the promises of God become a reality in your life!

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.

Psalm 141:3
