Italygate conspiracy theory

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Italygate is a pro-Trump, QAnon-affiliated[1][2] conspiracy theory that alleges the 2020 United States presidential election was rigged to favor Joe Biden using satellites and military technology to remotely switch votes from Donald Trump to Biden from the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Fact-checkers at Reuters and USA Today, who investigated these claims, described them as "false" and "baseless".[1][3]

Maria Strollo Zack, a Georgia-based lobbyist and leader of the 501(c)4 organization Nations in Action, said she told Trump about the conspiracy theory at his Mar-a-Lago resort on December 24, 2020.[4] On December 29, Mark Meadows forwarded a letter explaining the Italygate claims to acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen.[4] The letter was printed on the letterhead of USAerospace Partners, a company led by Republican businesswoman Michele Roosevelt Edwards.[4]

On January 6, 2021, the Institute for Good Governance—a firm also headed by Edwards—released a joint statement with Nations in Action[5] stating an Italian hacker named Arturo D’Elia had confessed to "using Leonardo computer systems and military satellites located in Pescara, Italy" to change U.S. election results.[4][1][6] Also on January 6, MediaMatters reported supporters of the theory were trying to get "#ItalyDidIt" to trend on Twitter.[7]

According to The New York Times, in Trump's last weeks in office, his chief of staff Mark Meadows tried to persuade the Department of Justice to investigate these claims. Meadows emailed Rosen a link to a YouTube video about the claims; Rosen forwarded the email to his deputy Richard Donoghue, who responded it was "pure insanity".[8][9][10][11][12]

Italygate, the Ministry of Justice opens an investigation into a visit two Americans paid to a prison in Salerno

The Head of the Penitentiary Administration ordered an investigation into the strange visit paid to Arturo D'Elia by former Five Star member Sara Cunial and two U.S. emissaries

18 Novembre 2021

by Conchita Sannino, translated by Luis E. Moriones

The Department of the Penitentiary Administration has initiated an internal investigation. The Ministry of Justice aims to understand how, ten months ago, two Americans were able to visit the prison in Salerno (in italian) without any authorization, to “interrogate” 39-year-old Italian mysterious hacker, Arturo D'Elia.

A day after la Repubblica’s reconstruction of the case (in italian), the head of the Penitentiary Administration, Dino Petralia, takes action and asks the direction of the Fuorni penitentiary, led by Rita Romano,”for details” on the visit that took place on January 19, 2021. D'Elia's lawyer, Nicola Naponiello, confirmed the circumstances of this singular visit. He said, “The two men went in with deputy Sara Cunial, and asked questions on the American elections. My client got scared, and I reported the whole episode to the public prosecutor”.

From a QAnon conspiracy theory on Trump's defeat to a prison in Italy: "Two Americans came to visit me", hacker says

17 Novembre 2021

The story is now confirmed by the same hacker, convictedin Napleson charges of hacking computers at defence group Leonardo. Leonardo is a pillar of Italian Defense (main shareholder of the Ministry of Economy and Finance). It’s a story about industrial espionage and international intrigue.

Ten months later, while the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office sent the documents - describing this and other alleged violations - to Rome, we learn that on the day of the visit the prison only registered deputy Cunial. Ms Cunial is now in the Misto (mixed parliamentary group), expelled from the Five Star Movement (for her radical views No Vax). “Entered at 11 am, left at 13”: there is no mention of the three companions. How can it be? Among them was a lawyer who introduced himself as close to a U.S. Defense executive.

Today, D'Elia is a free man, but he has a sentence of one year and four months for a computer attack at a NATO base. After leaving the prison in Salerno, in Naples he plea-bargained a term of three years and four months for having spied on 100 thousand files at Leonardo Group. He was arrested in December 2020, while his colleague, Antonio Rossi, accused of covering up for him, was also charged: his trial for deception begins on November 30. D'Elia had landed his position within the Italian colossus thanks to

the recommendation of a former Forza Italia senator, lawyer Franco Cardiello. Strangely enough, in the early stages of the investigation, Cardiello was also his defence lawyer. “There is nothing to explain. I have not seen D'Elia for over a year. It's true, I recommended him to a friend: he was very good, and they took him. I don't know anything else,” says curtly the former senator to la Repubblica.

D’Elia then entrusts his defence to Naponiello. And it is the latter who receives an SOS from the prison about two Americans visiting him. At the time, D'Elia's name appeared in hundreds of sites, including foreign ones. In the States, following Trump's defeat, conspiracy theories on the role that Italy, and in particular the role of two men arrested in Campania, have been spreading. Would they have hijacked the votes with satellites? “Italy did it”, is a writing that stands out in the hell of Capitol Hill. On January 6 our embassy in Washington alerts the Farnesina. At the same time, the Pentagon demands someone be sent to hear “the Italian suspects”.

To complicate matters, only a week later, comes the singular revelation of Sicilian lawyer, Alfio D'Urso, who claims to have a full confession by D'Elia, “a sworn testimony”, a long letter in which he would explain his role. It’s a hoax, now replies the superhacker. The only truth

appears to be the “mission” of two American men entering, like ghosts, a penitentiary in southern Italy. And nobody knows how or why.
