Lander plans ‘climate loans,’ environmental justice audits

 

In an office typically consumed by audits and budget tables, newly elected City Comptroller Brad Lander has set his sights on tackling a global challenge that doesn’t lend itself to easy analysis.

 

“Long term, I want to get started right away by confronting the climate crisis,” he said. “The Covid crisis shows what happens when you’re not prepared for a crisis and the cost it has in lives and in dollars.”

 

Lander has a stack of initiatives ready. He said he wants to fully divest the city’s five pension funds from fossil fuel companies by 2023, building on a process begun by his predecessor, Scott Stringer. Stringer reallocated $4 billion from fossil fuel companies and announced plans for the city’s pension funds to invest $50 billion in renewable-energy companies by 2035.

 

To hasten the transition to green energy use, Lander proposes to use pension fund money and other dedicated funds to create “climate loans” for businesses and property owners.
