anons… i've watched the tracking for several orbits and i'm pretty sure i understand why the altitude goes up and down. watch and you'll notice the altitude decreases as it approaches the equator, remains constant for a while, then increases as it approches the poles, remains constant for a while, then decreases again as it approaches the equator.
smack myself in the head lightbulb moment… the earth is NOT a perfect sphere, it's an oblate spheriod. the diameter of the earth is greatest at the equator, and least at the poles. the satelite, on the other hand, is orbiting the center of gravity. ergo, as it approches the equator, the path of the satellite is not changing, the surface of the earth is rising beneath it. DUH!
