Kamala Harris Compares January 6 Capitol Riot to Attacks That Killed Thousands at Pearl Harbor and on 9/11

Kamala Harris spoke at the Capitol Thursday morning along with Joe Biden to mark the anniversary of the January 6 riot that disrupted the effort by President Trump and Republicans in Congress to lawfully challenge the certification of the votes of several states in the Electoral College. Harris opened her remarks comparing the Capitol riot that saw one person killed (by law enforcement) and a handful of deaths by natural causes (one of these deaths is now being looked at as being from a police beating) to the attacks at Pearl Harbor and on 9/11 that killed thousands of Americans.

Excerpt from Harris’ speech:

Fellow Americans, good morning.

Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them — where they were and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault. Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars, but a place in our collective memory. December 7th, 1941. September 11th, 2001. And January 6th, 2021.

On that day, I was not only Vice President-elect, I was also a United States senator. And I was here at the Capitol that morning, at a classified hearing with fellow members of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Hours later, the gates of the Capitol were breached.

I had left. But my thoughts immediately turned not only to my colleagues, but to my staff, who had been forced to seek refuge in our office, converting filing cabinets into barricades.

A former Harris Senate staffer posted photos from January 6:

Dozens Killed As Kazakh Police Battle For Control Of Streets In 'War Zone' - Banks Being Looted

Security officials in Kazakhstan admitted they've killed dozens of anti-government rioters in the large main city of Almaty, after alleging the protesters attempted to storm and take control of several police stations. Authorities have labeled the massive fuel protests which have brought the country to the brink of collapse as fueled by "terrorists" and manipulated by "outside interference". Now with Russian support, it's looking like Kazakh authorities will intensify their crackdown.

Russian troops are en route to help restore order after an urgent decision by the Russian-led regional security bloc Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). "The CSTO confirmed Russian paratroopers were being dispatched as peacekeepers, with advance units already deployed," BBC reports Thursday.

Scenes from Almaty and other city streets in Kazakhstan are beginning to resemble a war zone, with state military forces seen in central squares, including armored personnel carriers, the day following embattled President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev vowed the state would not fall, and that he would stay at his post no matter what.

Widely circulating but unverified social media videos show running street battles with security forces, as police appear to be unleashing live fire, and as some unconfirmed footage seems to show rioters breaching police armories to access weapons.

Unverified footage: state sources are alleging rioters have breached and ransacked police stations…

Also as banks are being attacked and looted…

According to BBC citing state sources, "Twelve members of the security forces have been killed and 353 injured in the unrest, sparked by a doubling in the cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)."

Meanwhile Russia is getting increasingly vocal. According to the newswires:

Russian Foreign Ministry says they see events in Kazakhstan as a foreign-inspired attempt to undermine state security using force.

And more mayhem is unfolding as Kazakh troops deploy to city streets amid the martial law 'state of emergency' in effect over the whole country:

SOLDIERS FIRING AT PROTESTERS AND CARS ON MAIN SQUARE OF KAZAKHSTAN'S ALMATY - TASS QUOTES WITNESSES

In addition to Russia the other members of the CSTO expected to send "peacekeeping" forces include Belarus, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Without doubt the move is hugely controversial in the West, with a number of pundits already charging Putin with helping to expand 'authoritarian' rule in the Central Asian former Soviet Republic.

Mission is now being deemed 'counterterrorism'…

Things are likely to escalate before they get calmer, given that with state security services dubbing their mission to halt the unrest as part of "counter-terror" operations, it in effect greenlights the use of major force.

Already in Russian media there are "Reports of firefights in central Almaty as law enforcement authorities are conducting mop up operations to quell the protests."

Below: unverified video purporting to show weapons being passed out to protesters…

Further one regional analyst observed: "It is not surprising that this is happening in Almaty because that's where some protesters ransacked at least one gun store."

As of early Thursday, Russian peacekeeping forces have begun departing, however, there's nothing so far to suggest that the Kremlin is deploying a very large force - also as it likely has its eyes still focused on the Ukraine crisis 2.0 and NATO eastward expansion…

Ex-peer sexually assaulted boy and attempted to rape girl – UK court

Former Labour politician Nazir Ahmed has been convicted of offenses committed almost 50 years ago

A court in the UK has found Nazir Ahmed, formerly Lord Ahmed, guilty of the serious sexual assault of a boy and the attempted rape of a girl, both aged under 13, in offenses dating back to the 1970s.

The Pakistan-born politician was a teenager himself at the time of the offenses, Sheffield Crown Court heard. The prosecutor said that, while Ahmed had claimed all along that the allegations were a “malicious fiction,” a phone recording of a conversation between his two victims back in 2016 proved beyond reasonable doubt that the story had not been “made up or concocted.”

A woman who was party to that conversation recounted before the jury how Ahmed had attempted to rape her in the early 1970s.

The head of the Special Crime Division of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Rosemary Ainslie, praised the guilty verdict as proof that “where there is sufficient evidence, even in challenging cases, the CPS will bring a prosecution, put evidence before a jury and see rightful convictions,” even, as in this case, the defendant had held a “position of power, influence and responsibility for some time in the House of Lords.”

Ahmed’s two brothers, Mohammed Farouq and Mohammed Tariq, were charged with the indecent assault of the same boy whom Ahmed had also abused, but deemed unfit to stand trial. The politician was bailed pending a sentencing hearing to be held on February 4.

Ahmed is no stranger to allegations of sexual misconduct. He was forced to resign from the House of Lords in November 2020, following a conduct committee report that accused him of sexually and emotionally exploiting a vulnerable woman who had sought his assistance.

Ahmed has the dubious distinction of being the first peer recommended for expulsion. He stepped down of his own accord, however, before his colleagues could remove him from his post. The scandal that led to his downfall at the time was brought to public attention by an investigation carried out by the BBC program ‘Newsnight’.

President threatens unvaccinated with prison time

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has issued a stark warning to people who refuse the Covid jab if they fail to follow a stay-at-home order

With Covid infections in the Philippines hitting a three-month high, President Rodrigo Duterte took a firm approach to the unvaxxed, threatening to arrest such “recalcitrant persons” if they violate a confinement order.

In a televised address to the nation on Thursday, Duterte declared that, as he is “responsible for the safety and well-being of every Filipino,” he has been forced to take a firm approach to people who have still failed to get jabbed.

The strong stance by Duterte reflects concern in the Philippines about the rising number of Covid cases, which medical professionals fear could overwhelm the country’s healthcare system, risking a rise in fatalities.

On Thursday, daily Covid cases in the Philippines hit their highest level since September, with 17,220 new infections recorded, according to the health ministry.

That daily case number is more than triple the number recorded earlier in the week, with the country having experienced the second-highest number of Covid infections of any state in Southeast Asia. Officials stated that most of the new cases were caused by the spread of the Omicron variant.

Duterte has previously been vocal about his anger at anti-vaxxers, warning last year that, if people refuse to get jabbed, they could face prison time or a forced injection of Ivermectin, an anti-parasite drug that, among other things, is used to treat animals.

“If he refuses, if he goes out of his house and goes around the community, he can be restrained. If he refuses, the captain is empowered now to arrest recalcitrant persons,” Duterte said, referring to those who fail to get vaccinated.

At the end of 2021, government figures showed that 49.8 million individuals in the Philippines were fully vaccinated. That number is less than half of the country’s 110 million-strong population.

Moscow Declares Kazakhstan Unrest "Foreign-Inspired Attempt" Of "Armed & Trained Groups" To Overthrow State

Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday issued its most definitive and biting criticisms of the unfolding crisis just its its south, in the large former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, which it should be remembered is the size of Europe in terms of land mass.

Echoing statements this week from embattled strongman Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who has labeled the raging and increasingly violent fuel price hike protests and riots as "terroristic" in nature and inspired by "outside" forces, Russia has described a "foreign-inspired attempt to use armed and trained groups of people" to overthrow the legitimate government.

"We consider the recent events in a friendly country to be a foreign-inspired attempt to use armed and trained groups of people forcibly to undermine the security and integrity of the state", Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.

"She stressed that Russia is interested in reinstating the status quo in Kazakhstan, and will assist Kazakh authorities in stopping the violence," Russian media further cited her as saying.

Earlier in the day relatively small deployments of Russian paratroopers were filmed boarding military transport aircraft. This after the regional Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) alliance authorized a peace-keeping force on the ground. As we noted previously, there's nothing so far to suggest that the Kremlin is deploying a very large force - also as it likely has its eyes still focused on the Ukraine crisis 2.0 and NATO eastward expansion.

Beijing Expected To Keep 'Zero COVID' Policy For At Least Another Year

With China facing the prospect of an omicron-driven wave of COVID cases that's worse than anything the country has seen since it first unleashed SARS-CoV-2 upon the world, analysts on Wall Street are trying to suss out exactly what all this could mean for China's economy, and by extension, the world.

It's clear that an outbreak carries economic costs. Spending on COVID prevention measures could crowd out spending on manufacturing and infrastructure.

Taking into consideration the economic risks and political considerations, a team of analysts at Goldman Sachs expects Beijing to maintain its zero-COVID policy - or ZCP - through late 2022 at the very least. So far, China's outbreaks have been concentrated in a small number of provinces, as the charts below reflect.

India Won't Add Merck's COVID-19 Pill To National Treatment Protocol, Citing Safety Concerns

The state-run Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said it had become aware of “major safety concerns” that prompted the decision, despite India’s drug regulator in December approving the drug for emergency use.

It comes after France in December also canceled its order for the drug, developed by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, following disappointing trial data suggesting its drug was markedly less effective than previously thought.

“Molnupiravir has major safety concerns including teratogenicity, mutagenicity, muscle and bone damage. If this drug is given, contraception must be done for three months as the child may have problems,” ICMR Director-General Balram Bhargava told local media on Wednesday.

Bhargava noted that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization for Merck’s COVID-19 pill based on 1,433 patients with a 3 percent reduction in moderate disease when given in mild cases.

Members of the FDA’s Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee in November voted 13 for and 10 against the emergency use authorization for molnupiravir, agreeing with the idea that the drug’s benefits outweigh its potential risks, including concerns about potential birth defects.

However, “we must remember that this drug has major safety concerns,” Bhargava said, adding that the drug causes teratogenicity, or the ability to cause defects in a developing fetus, mutagenicity, or permanent transmissible changes in the structure of genetic material of cells, cartilage damage, and can also be damaging to muscles.

Moreover, Bhargava said contraception would also have to be given to individuals who take the drug—regardless of whether they are male or female— because “the child born could be problematic with teratogenic influences.”

“The WHO has not included it, the UK has not included it as of now. As of now, the current recommendation stands that it is not part of the national taskforce treatment,” Bhargava said.

However, Bhargava said that experts will continue to discuss the potential use of the treatment in the country, where virus case numbers are currently surging.

Molnupiravir is intended for use at home by adults with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk of developing severe disease. The drug is taken orally in pill form, twice a day for five days, within five days of symptoms onset.

Both FDA staff scientists and Merck have suggested the drug should not be recommended during pregnancy. Company studies in rats showed that the drug caused birth defects when given at very high doses. FDA staffers concluded the data “suggest that molnupiravir may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant individuals.”

Merck says that there is “no available human data on the use of molnupiravir in pregnant individuals to evaluate the risk of major birth defects, miscarriage or adverse maternal or fetal outcomes.”

Around 13 Indian companies, including Cipla, Sun Pharma, and BDR, are manufacturing molnupiravir.

Indian multinational pharmaceutical company Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories was set to roll out a generic version of the oral antiviral medication starting from next week at an extremely affordable treatment rate of 1,400 rupees ($18.84), 37 times cheaper than in the United States.

The Epoch Times has contacted Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Merck for comment.

As UK Takes Foot Off Throat, European Authoritarians Escalate Attacks On Unvaxx'd

COVID cases have continued to climb across Europe, and while UK PM Boris Johnson has stood his ground, saying he won't revive economy-crushing lockdowns, in Italy, PM Mario Draghi is moving ahead with his plans to make vaccines mandatory for all Italian citizens over the age of 50.

Sources inside Italy's "control room" virus task force have apparently confirmed the PM's plan, according to ANSA, the Italian-language newswire.

Pro-mandate Rep. Eric Swalwell called out after being caught maskless in Florida: 'It's not hypocrisy. It's hierarchy.'

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) – who claimed last week that Republicans "prolonged" the COVID-19 pandemic and caused vacations to be canceled – was caught maskless indoors while visiting in the red state of Florida.

The Daily Mail published photos of a casually dressed Swalwell sitting in the lobby of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel without a mask, holding his infant son while speaking to a woman.

Swalwell – who has fully supported strict COVID-19 protocols in California – lashed out at the publication for exposing him not wearing a face mask while indoors.

He tweeted, "They got me! Maskless, juggling a baby and a coffee while meeting with a Congolese queen. Pulitzer please!"

"Funny they didn’t use this picture in their headline, taking a cup of coffee to my mouth," Swalwell said on Wednesday. "And thanks @DailyMail for not blurring out Hank’s face. He’s too damn cute!"

"The Congressman was in the Sunshine State to take official meetings and campaign to help Democrats keep the House," Swalwell's office said. "He loves Florida and has dozens of family members there. It is lies from unvaccinated Republicans that are prolonging the pandemic."

Swalwell has repeatedly scapegoated Republicans for the COVID-19 pandemic, including taking potshots at GOP leaders for refusing to enact mask mandates.

"As we end 2021, mired in a deadly pandemic, you should know who has prolonged it," Swalwell wrote last Friday. "THESE GUYS. Republican liars. Your vacation cancelled. Your kids back to virtual learning. And back to masks everywhere. For blame look no farther than #TheseGuys."

Swalwell attacked GOP members in August, "THEY refuse to require masks. THEY LIE about vaccines. Your kids are in danger. Teachers are dying. Why? Because #THOSEGUYS in the Radical Republican Party."

Swalwell – who represents California's 15th Congressional District near San Francisco – has criticized the flexible pandemic management by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

In March 2020, Swalwell called DeSantis "selfish" for not closing Florida beaches.

In August 2021, Swalwell chided DeSantis for giving Florida parents the decision to send their children to school with masks or not.

Christina Pushaw – the press secretary for DeSantis – slammed Swalwell for his getaway to the free state of Florida.

"If Swalwell truly believed his own rhetoric about COVID, Florida, and mandates, he would not take his maskless unvaccinated baby to Loews Hotel South Beach during the Omicron case surge in Miami," Pushaw wrote on Twitter. "It's not hypocrisy. It's hierarchy."

Pushaw added, "I thought Democrats believed Florida is a dystopia of sickness and death."

Cruz Calls Trump Supporters Terrorists, Remembers 'Heroic' Capitol Police on 'Solemn' 1/6 Anniversary

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called Trump supporters terrorists and hailed the “heroic” actions of Capitol Police on January 6, 2021, a date Cruz calls “solemn” one. Cruz did not mention the point blank firearm death of unarmed Air Force veteran Ashli Babbit, but ostensibly believes the officer who shot her is a hero.

The remarks from Cruz came during a hearing of the Senate Rules Committee, where legislators asked Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger what he thinks could have been done differently to prevent the January 6th, 2021 “terrorist attack” from unfolding as American voters demonstrated against election fraud.

“Thank you for your service,” Cruz said as he addressed Manger. “And I want to start by thanking the heroic service of the men and women who serve alongside you.”

“We are approaching a solemn anniversary this week,” Cruz went on. “And it is an anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol where we saw the men and women of law enforcement demonstrate incredible courage, incredible bravery, risk their lives to defend the men and women who serve in this Capitol.”

“My view is that anyone who commits an act of violence should be prosecuted and anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer should go to jail for a very long time,” continued Cruz. “And I think that’s a principle that is true regardless of the politics of the violent criminal, whether they are right-wing, left-wing or they got no wings at all.”

“As we reflect on what happened a year ago, it is also worth asking – as we have, as this committee has, as this Congress has, I know you have – what could have been done differently? What could have prevented the breach of the Capitol, what could have prevented the riot from getting as far as it did,” questioned Cruz, incuriously.

Cruz also failed to mention the death of American Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt, the unarmed demonstrator shot dead by federal law enforcement inside the Capitol building on 1/6 from the opposite side of a locked door and did not respond to a request for comment from National File, asking whether or not he believes the officer who killed her to also be a “hero.”

Cruz was one of eight GOP Senators to originally object to the certification of contested electoral votes in the 2020 Presidential Election, only to stand down and allow the votes to go through after lawmakers returned to the legislative chambers following the 1/6 demonstrations. National File also asked Senator Cruz what changed during that time period about the contested votes and whether or not he had determined them to be legitimate, therefore changing his vote to affirm the counts and make Joe Biden President. Cruz and his staff didn’t respond to that question either.

Long before Cruz joined hands with Democrats to approve contested votes and make Joe Biden President of the United States, a hardcore contingent of Cruz supporters attempted to subvert the 2016 GOP nomination process and snatch the GOP nomination for President away from Donald Trump, who had won a convincing primary victory and was preparing to accept the party’s nomination at its convention. Cruz supporters ran desperate efforts to steal the nomination from Trump until the very last minute, with many of his hardcore supporters becoming so-called “Never Trumpers” and fracturing the GOP, though it wasn’t enough to stop Trump from being elected President.

This is not the first time Cruz has sided against Trump supporters over January 6.

Last year, he called the mostly peaceful protests a “terrorist attack” and said that he supports investigating, prosecuting, and incarcerating the Trump supporters who went inside the Capitol.

GETTR Shadow Bans Reporter Who Queried Ban of America First Streamer, Has 'Nothing More to Say'

Elijah Schaffer, the Blaze reporter who queried the GETTR ban of America First streamer Nick Fuentes has been shadowbanned on the platform.

As National File previously reported, Nick Fuentes, the host of popular nightly show America First, was permanently banned from GETTR last month for seemingly no reason:

Fuentes attempted to rejoin the platform multiple times on Tuesday evening, but was banned shortly after each time, even as viewers watched on his live stream.

“If I go on there, and they ban me for being me, well what is that? It’s arbitrary, it’s discretionary, and when they ban groyper, that takes it to a different level,” Fuentes said on his stream, referring to previous reports from the Daily Beast and others that GETTR had banned the term “groyper” from their platform, a name used to describe supporters of Fuentes.

Schaffer, a reporter for The Blaze, was one of the first in the media to question Fuentes’s ban from GETTR, and received confirmation from the Alt Tech site that Fuentes had allegedly broken their terms of service, but they did not respond to his inquiry as to what rules Fuentes specifically broke, or what posts.

“My inquiry was extremely professional and predicated on the basis that the public deserves the right to know GETTR’s threshold for banning users, largely in part due to their users joining to avoid the very censorship practices they seem to be implementing,” Schaffer added, saying that the obtuse nature of Fuentes’s banning made him “suspicious” of the platform.

Eventually, Schaffer received a response from a GETTR spokesperson, who said that they had “nothing more to say” on Fuentes’s ban, other than highlighting that GETTR founder Jason Miller “has been on record many times talking about how [GETTR does] not tolerate hate speech, racism, discrimination, or recruiting for white nationalism [sic] causes” on the site.

Schaffer also included a screenshot of a search on GETTR for his name, which returned no results, despite the fact that he has an account on the platform.

French House Approves Macron’s Stricter ‘Vaccine Passport’ After Tumultuous Debate

The French government on Thursday approved a new CCP virus bill that would make it more difficult for those who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to enjoy some activities in social life and access public transport.

Following days of tumultuous debates, lawmakers in the lower house passed draft legislation, including the stricter vaccine passport, shortly after 5 a.m. (11 p.m. ET) by a margin of 214 to 93.

The legislation, backed by President Emmanuel Macron, will go to the Senate early next week before a final vote in the French National Assembly.

The parliamentary debate proposing the new set of CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus rules for unvaccinated citizens was suspended early on Wednesday as opposition lawmakers accused Macron of using divisive language during an interview.

French government officials vowed after the pause in debate that the new rules will likely go into effect as initially planned by mid-January. Under the new law, unvaccinated people aged 16 and older will be blocked from hospitality venues and interregional public transport.

If passed, the legislation will remove a current option on the vaccine passport—which allows people who are able to show a recent negative COVID-19 test to still enter hospitality venues or travel by trains.

San Francisco Teachers to ‘Shut the Whole System Down’ in Omicron ‘Sickout’

Teachers in the San Francisco Unified Schools District (SFUSD) are planning a “sickout” on Thursday to protest what they say is the district’s failure to protect them from the omicron strain of the coronavirus, which is now surging in the state.

Hundreds of teachers are planning to call in sick, potentially disrupting schools — echoing the Chicago Teachers Union’s (CTU) vote to refuse to work this week, which resulted in classes being canceled for the second day in a row Thursday.

The informal strike action by members of United Educators San Francisco (UESF) comes as the union is engaging in collective bargaining with the SFUSD over coronavirus measures, the San Francisco Chronicle notes.

The state is currently experiencing a coronavirus surge that has seen hundreds of Bay Area students test positive before returning to school.

581 people had signed an online petition in support of the San Francisco “sickout” as of Thursday morning, which reads, in part (original emphasis):

As of today, 12/29, SF is exceeding 1,000 cases a day. We face returning to school sites that are in violation of our health & safety memorandum of understanding [MOU] between SFUSD and UESF. We still lack the PPE (KN95 masks), comprehensive rapid testing, and improved ventilation promised us—over six months since our full return to in-person schooling. According to the MOU, we are entitled to high quality KN95 masks at each work site. Many educators report that this has NEVER been the case at their sites. The SFUSD website is touting its partnership with “SaferTogether” to provide rapid testing trucks at school sites, but these are confined to a few elementary schools, not the widespread rapid-testing we need at each site.

Let’s show them we have the power! We will spread the word among our coworkers, parents, and students, as well as speak to the press and community members. We must show this district, this city, this state, and this country that we value human life over profit; that we will defend the most vulnerable members of our community; that we are tired of expending our blood, sweat, and tears to compensate for the incompetence, greed, and complacence of our so-called leaders; that we DEMAND MORE. By withholding our labor, by reclaiming our time and our health, we send the message that if SFUSD, the City, State, and Federal Government do not invest in seriously addressing this pandemic (and the ongoing issues which make dealing with the pandemic so challenging for public schools), we can shut the whole system down. And we will!

We would ideally like a two week pause before school starts to allow time for testing and sufficient masks and rapid testing supplies to be sent to ALL sites and district offices. That is still the safest course of action.

California received $15.3 billion from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act last year to spend on improving school safety, though the Democrat-run Congress gave school districts until Sep. 30, 2024 to spend the money.

California had already received $13 billion for school safety during the pandemic under relief signed by President Donald Trump.

FNC’s Carlson: January 6 Was ‘Not a Violent Terrorist Attack’ — Pretending It Was a ‘Failed Coup’ Is Dems Midterm Election Strategy

Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his program with his take on Democrats’ apparent overreach in politicizing the January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot.

Carlson dismissed claims January 6 was a “violent terrorist attack,” referring to it as a midterm election strategy.

Transcript as follows:

CARLSON: Pardon the good cheer, solemnity is called for.

Today is January 5, or as it will henceforth be known to all civilized peoples around the world, January 6 Eve.

Tonight at midnight, just hours from now, we will begin the first of many annual remembrances of the horrifying atrocities that took place exactly one year ago at the United States Capitol.

So how do you commemorate something like this history-changing event that’s horrible to think about, yet so significant in the life of the country? Well, body counts are the traditional measure. When the nation was wracked by unimaginable loss in years past. That’s how we remembered it.

Forty thousand casualties at Gettysburg, 2,400 lost to Pearl Harbor, nearly 3,000 Americans dead on 9/11. But this is a new time, a different age. Those antiquated metrics won’t work as we observe a moment of silence for the fallen of January 6.

On January 6, there was — let’s see, actually there was just Ashli Babbitt. Ashli Babbitt was not a union soldier. She’s not a deckhand on the Arizona. She is not even a heroic fireman rushing into a collapsing office tower. She was merely a Trump voter.

She was unarmed, she was shot to death without warning by a Capitol Hill police officer with a documented history of reckless behavior. In the end, Ashli Babbitt was the death toll on January 6, but honestly, so what? It’s not really about the numbers, is it? It’s not about how many people were killed on January 6.

In fact, the list of those who weren’t killed on January 6 is quite long. It’s impressively long. It includes all 535 Members of Congress, as well as their entire staff, and the Press Corps that covers them. None of them died. They’re still around.

But again, who cares? It’s not about body counts. It’s about feelings. It’s about how the survivors feel, especially the reporters who survived.

The feelings of reporters in Washington matter a great deal in America. They certainly matter a lot more than how you feel at the moment. How you feel, as you’ve probably noticed by this point is totally irrelevant to anyone. Nobody cares.

But the journalists of Capitol Hill, we do care, and they’re very upset. In fact, many has still not recovered from what they saw that day, as they lie down to sleep at night, the horrible images replay in a loop on the back of their eyelids. The deafening thunder of cannon volleys, the smoke from the remorseless artillery fire blotting out the sun, the screams of the mortally wounded calling out for their loved ones echoing like some demonic soundtrack against the walls of the Speaker’s Lobby. Hell in a very small place.

Unless you were there that day, you cannot possibly understand what it was like. Imagine the Tet Offensive plus Fallujah, plus the night before Thanksgiving at Whole Foods. On January 6, you couldn’t tell who the enemy was, unless you looked down and saw they bought their shoes at Walmart, then you knew.

But otherwise, it was the fog of war, my friends.
