Kazakhstan protests: Russian-led troops ‘will leave within two weeks’

Russian troops will begin pulling out of Kazakhstan this week and will have left the country by the end of the month, the president of the central Asian state has said.

Moscow sent troops to Kazakhstan last week after President Tokayev appealed to the CSTO, a Russian-led military alliance involving six former Soviet states, to help restore order amid massive protests against the country’s authoritarian leaders. Almost 10,000 people have been detained in connection with the unrest.

“The main mission of the CSTO peacekeeping forces has been successfully completed,” Tokayev, 68, said today. He said their withdrawal would begin on Thursday and would take no longer than ten days.

Omicron revelation surfaces in Canadian wastewater

The variant was noted by researchers before it was detected in South Africa

Scientists in Nova Scotia, Canada have said they started detecting the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in local wastewater before it was officially discovered in South Africa in late November.

Last week, Professor Graham Gagnon, director of the Dalhousie University Centre for Water Resource Studies in Nova Scotia, told CBC that they found Omicron in wastewater samples from early November.

“It was surprising to us to see a viral signal in early November. Only in retrospect were we able to see that it was a variant and not the original,” he said. The cases were confirmed to be Omicron on December 13 and were linked to a Covid-19 outbreak at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

The Omicron variant was formally identified in South Africa in late November.

The research director said he was surprised to find the virus in November because students at the residences were all vaccinated and those tested provided negative results. He said the results were passed on to officials at the university who warned students.

“For us, it's been a successful project,” Gagnon told CBC, adding, “It's a tool that can be used to help make decisions.”

The Dalhousie researchers have been testing wastewater for signs of the deadly virus since December 2020 at four main wastewater treatment plants in Halifax and five student residences on the Dalhousie campus.

Covid-19 can live longer in the gastrointestinal tract than in the respiratory tract, despite being a respiratory virus. Thus, wastewater testing can be a useful tool for monitoring its prevalence.

Elderly man gets 12 Covid vaccines in one year

The 84-year-old used different IDs before police caught him

An Indian senior has been detained by the authorities after getting a dozen of Covid shots, which he claims have had a very positive effect on his health beyond keeping him safe from the virus.

Former postman Brahamdev Mandal, a resident of Orai village in Bihar, received his first vaccine dose on February 13, 2021. He then got vaccinated regularly until January 4, when his plot was finally uncovered. It was later revealed that he took long journeys to get his extra shots and at one point even managed to book two Covid-19 jabs less than half an hour apart.

“Primary Health Center Puraini has filed a complaint against Brahmdev Mandal,” the Puraini police station spokesman said in a statement, quoted by local media.

exactly this… totally not the same world as 50 years ago let alone when slavery was around. No one alive today lives even remotely close to how their ancestors did 150 years ago. Different jobs, different languages, different philosophy, different outlook on life, different countries, different religions, different everything. Acting like some how they are still repressed for what happened then is ridiculous.
