13 China warplanes in Taiwan strait

US troops sent 'to rescue Taiwan' in the wake of an invasion of 13 China warplanes in the Taiwan strait

Chinese troops will attack any US forces sent to defend Taiwan if a war over the island breaks out, Beijing's state-back media has warned.

The Global Times newspaper, a mouthpiece for China's Communist rulers, issued the threat after US national security adviser Jake Sullivan vowed that Washington would 'never allow' a Chinese invasion to take place.

Such threats are not credible because the US 'cannot afford the cost of defending Taiwan, the newspaper said, urging Sullivan to shut his 'big mouth' and avoid 'creating more embarrassment for your country.'

As if to underline the threat, China on Friday sent 13 warplanes to menace Taiwan's airspace, including eight fighters and two nuclear-capable bombers.

Taipei said the sortie included six J-16 fighters, two J-10 fighters, two H-6 bombers, one Y-8 spy plane, one Y-8 anti-submarine plane, one KJ-500 spy plane.

Manila Plans to build five Military Base facilities for US Forces in the Philippines

Manila Plans to build five Military Base facilities for US Forces in the Philippines

Plans to build facilities for US troops in the Philippines, which had stalled for years amid wrangling over rules for visiting forces, are back on track, officials from both countries said Thursday.

โ€œWe plan to move fairly quickly,โ€ Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez said during an online conference sponsored by Pacific Forum. The Hawaii-based think tank organized the event to discuss the alliesโ€™ 70-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty.

Plans to build Facilities for U.S. forces at five bases were authorized by the Philippines government under the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

The pact allows U.S. troops and contractors to operate at agreed-upon locations in the Philippines. Although the revised Philippine constitution bans permanent U.S. bases, the agreement hands the U.S. forces operational control of the shared facilities and allows them to stockpile defense equipment and supplies.

The US Provides Military Support to Taiwan by Selling Launch Weapons Mounted on Army Equipment

The US Provides Military Support to Taiwan by Selling Launch Weapons Mounted on Army Equipment.

It is well past time the United States takes more concrete steps to support the defense of Taiwan. Too much time has been devoted to debates over largely symbolic issues, however important they might be in their substantive implications.

They nonetheless are peripheral to the critical issue of supporting Taiwanโ€™s continuing existence as a free, sovereign, and democratic country that requires a strong defense.

In fact, the August 4 U.S. arms sale to Taiwan of self-propelled howitzers and kits to give the shells GPS guidance systems (package valued at US$750 million) โ€” the first arms sale to Taiwan under President Biden โ€” is the kind of concrete U.S. support Taiwan needs.

Also important has been President Bidenโ€™s continuation of the Trump administration policy of U.S. Navy transits of the Taiwan Strait and naval exercises in the South China Sea.

According to the Congressional Research Service report on U.S.-China Strategic Competition in South and East China Seas, updated as of October 6, in 2021, there have been 8 South China Sea freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs) and 13 Taiwan Strait transits.

US Marines and Japan will set up a Temporary Attack Base at the Nansei Islands near Taiwan

US Marines and Japan will set up a Temporary Attack Base at the Nansei Islands near Taiwan

US Marines and Japan will set up a temporary attack Military base at the initial stage of a contingency on the Nansei Islands, a chain stretching southwest from the Japanese prefectures of Kagoshima and Okinawa toward Taiwan. Okinawa hosts the bulk of U.S. military installations in Japan.

Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military have drawn up a draft joint operation plan that would enable the setup of an attack base along the Nansei island chain in the country's southwest in the event of a Taiwan contingency, according to Japanese government sources.

The U.S. military will get support from the SDF to send troops to the islands if a Taiwan contingency appears imminent, the sources said.

Such a deployment, however, would make the islands the target of attack by China's military, putting the lives of residents there at risk. Legal changes would be needed in Japan to realize the plan, the sources said.

For the first time, the Taiwanese Navy has joined the US Navy's Largest Force

For the first time, the Taiwanese Navy has joined the US Navy's Largest Force

Taiwan should be invited to the world's largest naval exercise next year, according to the US' 2022 defense spending blueprint signed into law by President Joe Biden this week.

The 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) says the invitation would supplement US efforts to support the self-governed democratic island in the face of "increasingly coercive and aggressive behavior" by China.

RIMPAC 2022 will be the 28th version of the event. The US, Australia, and Canada navy founded the exercises in 1971 as an annual event, but in 1974 they were moved to a biennial basis as more nations were invited to participate, according to the US Navy.
