"Nucor Corp. has chosen Mason County in West Virginia, near the Ohio border, as the site for its $2.7 billion state-of-the-art sheet steel mill expected to employ 800 people when it starts operating in 2024. The plant will have a capacity of 3 million tons of steel annually, specializing in low-carbon steel for the auto industry.
“We are pleased to create hundreds of new, high-paying jobs, and position West Virginia as a leader in clean steel production,” says CEO Leon Topalian. “We are also excited to create substantial long-term value for investors through this high-return investment, which will help drive Nucor's continued growth."
The new mill will be designed to produce sheet steel that's 84 inches wide. It will include a 76-inch tandem cold mill and two galvanizing lines. It will be able to produce high-end automotive steel as well as a construction-grade line. Nucor is in the midst of explosive growth as it is set to report all-time record earnings for 2021. In recent months, it announced the West Virginia plant, plans for a $350 million rebar construction steel plant in the South Atlantic region and the $400 million-plus purchase of a 51% share of a joint venture with Japan Based JFE Steel in Fontana, California. The California deal is expected to close at the end of March. For the new rebar plant site, Nucor is looking in six states including North and South Carolina."
