US sanctions Russian firm over North Korea missiles

Biden administration’s newest blacklisting comes after a series of missile tests by Pyongyang

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against six North Koreans as well as one Russian national and a Russian company, accusing them of “proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.”

Washington announced the blacklist on Wednesday, calling it part of “ongoing efforts to counter the DPRK’s weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.”

The sanctions target North Korea's “continued use of overseas representatives to illegally procure goods for weapons,” said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson.

A DPRK national based in Vladivostok, Russia, Choe Myong Hon is accused of providing Russian “telecommunications-related equipment” to the Second Academy of Natural Sciences (SANS), sanctioned by the US in 2010.

Four North Koreans based in China have also been sanctioned for allegedly procuring steel alloys, software, chemicals, and other merchandise in service of Pyongyang’s missile program: Sim Kwang Sok and Pyon Kwang Chol in Dalian, as well as Kim Song Hun and Kang Chol Hak in Shenyang.

Moscow-based O Yong Ho was sanctioned alongside Russian national Roman Anatolyevich Alar and the Moscow company Parsek LLC, for alleged “activities or transactions that have materially contributed to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery by DPRK.”

The US Treasury said its actions follow North Korea’s six ballistic missile launches since September 2021, each in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The most recent launch took place on Tuesday, with Pyongyang claiming to have successfully fired a hypersonic missile.

Under the sanctions, any property held by the designated individuals in the US is subject to seizure. Anyone in the world who engages in certain transactions with the designated individuals or entities may also be subject to US sanctions, Treasury noted.

First European country offers 4th Covid vaccine dose

“Vulnerable” citizens are set to receive additional boosters in Denmark as the government prepares to scale back its pandemic restrictions

Denmark will soon offer a fourth Covid-19 shot to those considered at high risk from the virus, becoming the first in Europe to do so despite a regulator’s warning that there is not enough data to know if the policy will help.

“We are now embarking on a new chapter, namely a decision to offer the fourth jab to the most vulnerable citizens,” Health Minister Magnus Heunicke told reporters on Wednesday, adding that “The more widespread the infection is in society, the greater the risk that the infection will reach our most vulnerable.”

The additional shot will be available starting later this week for those with serious pre-existing conditions who received an initial booster last fall, the official went on. The government is also now considering another dose for elderly citizens and nursing home residents, though has yet to make a decision.

California firefighters battle massive blaze

Multiple fire engines have been dispatched to battle flames ravaging a commercial building in San Bernardino County

A fire has erupted at a commercial lot in San Bernardino, California, with firefighters seen beating back flames so they do not spread to nearby homes. The incident has reportedly caused outages in the area.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at around 4:35pm local time, according to a Los Angeles CBS affiliate. Footage captured by local media showed the fire in progress as it consumed much of the commercial lot in the town of Adelanto.

So far, firefighters have reportedly been able to keep the conflagration from reaching homes and businesses in the area, and crews were dispatched to repair downed power lines, which caused a brief outage for residents.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries. The neighboring Apple Valley Fire Protection District and Victorville Fire Department were also called to assist local authorities in fighting the blaze, according to county officials.

It’s so far unclear what caused the building, which is located near a strip mall and several homes, to catch fire.

Bill Gates says COVID-19 vaccines 'still allow infections' and their 'duration appears to be limited'

When asked what sort of advancement would help end the coronavirus pandemic, ultra-wealthy Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates noted that people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 can still catch the illness, and that vaccines seem to be limited in their longevity.

Long-lasting vaccines that protect people from getting re-infected are needed, Gates tweeted during an exchange with Devi Sridhar, professor and chair of global public health at Edinburgh University Medical School.

"The vaccines we have prevent severe disease and death very well but they are missing two key things. First they still allow infections ("breakthrough") and the duration appears to be limited. We need vaccines that prevent re-infection and have many years of duration," Gates tweeted.

Many people who have been fully vaccinated and boosted have still tested positive for COVID-19.

Gates suggested that people may need annual COVID-19 vaccine jabs.

"Once Omicron goes through a country then the rest of the year should see far fewer cases so Covid can be treated more like seasonal flu," he tweeted.

"A more transmissive variant is not likely but we have been surprised a lot during this pandemic. Omicron will create a lot of immunity at least for the next year," Gates wrote. "We may have to take yearly shots for Covid for some time."

Gates is a billionaire with a net worth of more than $135 billion, according to Forbes.
