CLAIM: COVID-19 vaccines are causing a new illness called “VAIDS,” short for vaccine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. VAIDS isn’t a real condition, nor do COVID-19 vaccines cause a syndrome matching this description, an immunotherapy expert confirmed to The Associated Press.
THE FACTS: Doctors and activists with a history of spreading anti-vaccine misinformation are spreading fear about COVID-19 vaccines by falsely claiming the shots cause a new medical condition called vaccine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
Widely circulating Twitter and Reddit posts falsely identified VAIDS as an emerging condition that is “similar to AIDS but caused by the C19 jabs.” Some social media users kept their posts vague, asking, “What is VAIDS?” Meanwhile, Google searches for the term skyrocketed.
A blogger identified only as “Jack” also claimed to have coined the term, writing on Nov. 23 that “sometimes, a situation calls for the creation of a brand new term,” and defining it as the “gradual destruction of the human immune system by vaccines.”
In reality, there’s no such thing as VAIDS, and research shows the available COVID-19 vaccines provide recipients with increased protection against the coronavirus.
“AIDS is a generalized body-wide compromise of a specific subset of immune cells (mostly CD4+ lymphocytes) caused specifically by infection with the HIV-1 virus,” said Dr. Grant McFadden, director of the Biodesign Center for Immunotherapy, Vaccines and Virotherapy at Arizona State University. “There is no vaccine-induced counterpart of AIDS.”
Given that billions of people around the world have already been vaccinated against COVID-19, McFadden said, “if such a thing as VAIDS existed, we would have detected it by now.”
A search across legitimate biomedical literature found no mention of vaccine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others shows the COVID-19 vaccines boost the immune response. The mRNA vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize the spike protein on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19, allowing it to generate an immune response, experts say.
The AP has debunked other false claims about how COVID-19 vaccines affect the immune system, including claims that they destroy the body’s T cells, that they cause a harmful phenomenon called antibody-dependent enhancement and that they lead to autoimmune disease.

Theranos' Holmes to be sentenced in September for fraud conviction
Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is slated to be sentenced on Sept. 26 on her convictions for defrauding investors in the blood-testing startup, according to a court filing on Wednesday.
Holmes, 37, was convicted on Jan. 3 on three counts of fraud and one count of conspiring to defraud private investors in the company. She remains free on a $500,000 bond secured by properties.
Holmes plans to ask the judge overseeing her case to overturn her convictions, according to court filings. If he does not, she is likely to appeal and could seek to suspend her sentence until a final ruling.
The former entrepreneur became a Silicon Valley celebrity after claiming Theranos machines could run common blood tests on a few drops from a finger prick. Once valued at $9 billion, Theranos collapsed after the Wall Street Journal published a series of articles, starting in 2015, that suggested its devices were flawed and inaccurate.
Holmes was indicted in 2018 on allegations of defrauding investors and patients. Last week, a jury convicted her on four investor-related charges, acquitted her on four patient-related charges and deadlocked on three other counts.
Holmes had agreed with prosecutors that her sentencing should occur in September, given "ongoing proceedings in a related matter."
The trial of former Theranos executive Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani is scheduled to begin on March 9.

CNN host Don Lemon is getting blasted for covering his pal Jussie Smollett’s trial on his late-night show — without mentioning his own central role in tipping off the “Empire” star that he was being investigated by police.
As he took the stand Monday, Smollett, 39, had told the court that he first knew that police doubted his race-hate attack was real after getting a text message from Lemon, saying that was key in his decision not to hand his phone records over to cops.

In an interview with PBS NewsHour correspondent Jeffrey Brown about his new book of short stories "Uncommon Type," and his work, actor Tom Hanks also addressed the recent allegations of sexual misconduct against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
He said that kind of behavior is happening in "every other corner" of his industry, and many other industries across America, particularly by people in positions of power. But the Weinstein allegations represent a tipping point for Hollywood, he said.
"The dam has burst here in a big way, and it is not just the halls of places like Harvey Weinstein’s office where this was standard operating procedure," he said. "Don’t be surprised if, you know, there’s going to be a sign in front of every one of the studio gates that will say, 'all people entering this studio will obey this code of ethics, or they will be escorted from the premises,' and that will all be about sexual harassment, and sexual predatory behavior."
