To my knowledge "Merlin" is not a name but a rank or title in ancient male orders of the druids (which were the universities of their time). The lowest rank was that of an "Ovate", followed by that of a "Bard". After mastery of knowledge one would become "Druid".

The archdruid in final was the "Merlin".

In the Arthurian story rhe true name of the Merlin was Kevin, he was physically a cripple, but skilled in music (lute + lyrics).

And "pulling the sword out of the stone" actually pointed to the ability to smelt ore (stone) to forge a weapon.

Just my thoughts on what I have read.

Don't make too much of it.
