Human DNA includes genetic material from thousands of viruses. They are found in every part of our bodies. We have no idea how many virus there are. We know there are some viruses that make people sick, and there are untold millions more that don't; and we have no idea what they do do.
They are found everywhere even in places previously presumed sterile.
We don't know where they came from, we don't know their role in evolution, their history.
We really don't know much about viruses and their (presumed) evolutionary role(s) at all.
