UN Safety and Security Captain Dies Unexpectedly
Capt. William Douglas Ball, 62 of Fords passed suddenly on Monday, January 10, 2022 at the JFK Medical Center in Edison.
Born on July 2, 1959 in Red Bank, NJ, He was formerly of Matawan, NJ, before moving to the Fords section of Woodbridge Twp. NJ, 23 years ago.
He proudly served his country as a Sergeant with the United States Marine Corp. from September 26, 1980 to April 25, 1986.
He was currently employed as Captain of the Department of Safety and Security at the United Nations in New York City.
He joined the Organization on 22 August 1988 and grew to be a highly valued and respected member of the United Nations Security and Safety Service.His 33 years of dedicated servicewere marked by his devotion to ethics and integrity and his genuine desire to serve others with kindness, compassion and humility.Captain Ball worked many years as a close protection officer on the Secretary-General’s Protective Detail serving two Secretaries-General. As his career developed, Bill assumed the role as Officer-In-Charge of the Special Services Unit, where he oversaw the complex VIP operations during many UNGA’s and other conferences at UNHQyear-round. Bill served on numerous overseas conferences and developed a rapport with UN colleagues from various duty stations and was highly respected by the local law enforcement community. He also served as a senior Supervisor on all three uniformed squads, and as Officer-In-Charge of the night squad. Bill was a true professional and a delight to work alongside.
He was predeceased by his beloved parents; Barbara Ann and Charles F. Ball Jr.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Joan (nee: AJodha) Ball, and his two brothers; Charles F. Ball , Jr and Duane Alan Ball of of Whitehouse Station, NJ.
