Massive Fire Spreads To Passaic Chlorine Plant; Neighbors Told To Close Windows
A massive fire spread to a chlorine plant in Passaic on Friday night.
As of 11 p.m., it had grown to ten alarms.
The smoke was so widespread, it shut down a major highway and could be seen nearly 10 miles away.
As CBS2’s Nick Caloway reports, sirens could be heard from every direction in Passaic as the fire raged out of control.
“It’s unfortunate. You don’t know who was in there, you know? So it’s just bad to watch right now,” one resident said.
The fire started around 8:30 p.m. at two buildings on Canal Street and eventually spread to a nearby chlorine plant.
A fireball reached several stories high, and a toxic cloud of smoke could be seen, and smelled, miles away. New York City warned residents they may be able to see or smell smoke from the fire.
Passaic Mayor Hector Lora took to Facebook to warn people who live nearby.
“To all residents in the immediate area, please close your windows as our firefighters are desperately working to get this fire under control,” he said.

Man who bought gun for Kyle Rittenhouse pleads no contest
The man who bought an AR-15-style rifle for Kyle Rittenhouse pleaded no contest Monday to a reduced charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in a deal with prosecutors that allows him to avoid prison.
Kenosha County Circuit Judge Bruce Schroeder accepted Dominick Black’s plea during a six-minute hearing. Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger dropped two felony counts of intent to deliver a dangerous weapon to a minor as part of the deal.
Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a misdemeanor punishable by up to nine months in jail, but Binger reduced the charge to a non-criminal county ordinance violation. Under the deal, Black will pay a $2,000 fine. Each felony count would have been punishable by up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
