Ex-Obama education advisor pleads guilty to wire fraud

A one-time education advisor to former president Barack Obama plead guilty Friday to wire fraud in connection to an alleged plot to pilfer $218,000 from a network of charter schools he founded in New York City.

“Seth Andrew, 43, a former White House advisor, admitted today to devising a scheme to steal from the very same schools he helped create. Andrew now faces time in federal prison for abusing his position and robbing those he promised to help,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement.

The sentence could land Andrew up to 20 years in prison, according to the Department of Justice. He will be sentenced on April 14.

Andrew was arrested in April and accused of misappropriating the funds from his Democracy Prep charter school to secure a lower interest rate on a bank loan for a multimillion dollar Manhattan apartment in 2019, prosecutors said.

The charters have several branches in Harlem.

After working for the Department of Education in 2013, Andrew took a job with the Obama White House as a senior adviser in the Office of Educational Technology, and hung around until the end of Obama’s tenure in office.
