Alice Springs to enter lockout, as number of people in NT hospitals with COVID grows
Alice Springs will enter lockout from 3pm today, as the NT records another 327 cases of COVID-19.
There's also been an increase in the number of people with COVID-19 in hospital, up to 44 patients from 32 on Saturday.
No patients are in the ICU.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the number of people in hospital represented about 1.1 per cent of the NT's 4,000 active cases.
Mr Gunner said 65 per cent of the NT's hospital admissions were in Alice Springs.
"This does not mean that they are all unwell, many are mild cases," he said.
"Hospital care is probably a higher level of care than what is required."
Alice Springs lockout from 3pm today
Mr Gunner said the lockout in Alice Springs would start from 3pm today, and means unvaccinated people can only leave the house for four reasons.
People who aren't double dosed are only allowed to leave home for medical treatment, to buy essential goods and services, for an hour of exercise a day or to care for a family member or person who can’t care for themselves.
People who are fully-vaccinated can continue as normal, but must comply with a NT-wide mask mandate that is currently in place.
Mr Gunner said unvaccinated people were "much more likely" to become seriously ill with COVID-19, which is why there was a lockout limiting people who weren't fully protected.
The remote Central Australian communities of Yuendumu and Yuelamu are also in lockout.
Mr Gunner said there were five new cases in Yuendumu in the past 24 hours and six in Yuelamu.
Lockouts in both communities have been extended to 5pm on Sunday January 23, and are scheduled to lift with restrictions in Alice Springs.
Mr Gunner said although there hadn't been a "substantial growth" of COVID-19 cases in Alice Springs, there had been a number of outbreaks in "high risk" settings.
"We do have some concerns about Alice Springs," Mr Gunner said.
Outbreaks have been recorded at prisons in Alice Springs and Darwin, as well as aged care facilities and an Alice Springs renal hostel.
