Nearly 14K still without power in Moore County following winter storm

Moore County saw the most outages in the CBS 17 viewing area

Duke Energy is reporting nearly 14,000 customers are still without power Monday morning following the weekend’s winter storm.

A total of a little more than 27,000 Duke Energy customers are in the dark on Monday.

That’s down from 90,000 customers at 5 p.m. Sunday

update on restoration estimates until 7 p.m. Monday.

Trial against philanthropist and dozens resumes in Turkey

The trial against prominent Turkish civil rights figure and philanthropist Osman Kavala, who has been been in custody for more than four years, resumed Monday without his participation.

The hearing is taking place as a Council of Europe deadline that could trigger infringement procedures looms.

Kavala, 64, is accused of financing nationwide anti-government protests in 2013, attempting to overthrow the government by helping orchestrate a coup attempt three years later and espionage.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly disdains Kavala, accusing him of being the “Turkish leg” of billionaire U.S. philanthropist George Soros, whom Erdogan alleges has been behind insurrections in many countries.

Schwartz’s daughter Clara, 19, and three others have been charged in the case. The four are said to have a fascination with fantasy worlds, witchcraft, and the occult.

Kyle Hulbert, 18, who allegedly committed the murder, has a [history of mental illness], and is reported by the Washington Post to have killed Schwartz to prevent the murder of Clara.

At the request of Clara Schwartz’s attorneys, on February 13 Judge Pamela Grizzle ordered all new evidence introduced about her role in the case to be sealed. She also issued a temporary gag order

covering the entire case on police, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.
