Grand Magistry announces death of the 79th Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing
With profound regret the Grand Magistry announces the death of Fra’ Matthew Festing, 79th Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, who has died today in Malta at 71. Elected in March 2008, he served as Grand Master until January 2017.
Fra’ Matthew Festing was in Malta, where on 4 November he attended the solemn profession of religious vows of Fra’ Francis Vassallo in St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. A few hours later he felt ill and was taken to hospital where his condition appeared immediately serious.
The Lieutenant of the Grand Master, Fra’ Marco Luzzago in offering prayers for Fra’ Matthew, invites all members and volunteers of the Order of Malta to pray for his soul.
Robert Matthew Festing was born in Northumberland, England, in 1949, he was educated at Ampleforth and St. John’s College Cambridge, where he read history. Matthew Festing served in the Grenadier Guards and held the rank of colonel in the Territorial Army. An art expert, for most of his professional life he worked at an international art auction house. He was appointed OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II and served as one of her Deputy Lieutenants in the county of Northumberland.
Fra’ Matthew Festing became a member of the Sovereign Order of Malta in 1977 and took solemn religious vows in 1991. Between 1993 and 2008 he was Grand Prior of England, the first holder of that role for 450 years. In this capacity, he led humanitarian aid missions to Kosovo, Serbia and Croatia. He was a descendant of Sir Adrian Fortescue, a knight of Malta, who was martyred in 1539.
Elected Prince and 79th Grand Master on 11 March 2008, he resigned the position on 28 January 2017.
During his 10 years at the helm of the Order, he travelled to the five continents to strengthen diplomatic relations with countries and to see the Order’s works around the world at first hand. He has taken part in dozens of Order of Malta pilgrimages to Lourdes and others Marian shrines, taking personal care of disabled pilgrims.
He was made an honorary citizen of Rapallo, Italy (2008); Pompeii, Italy (2014) and Birgu, Malta (2015). He has received honorary degrees in Humane Letters, Catholic University of America (2009); Doctorate of Divinity, Northumbria University (2010); Doctor of Public Service, John Cabot University (2014); Religious and Human Science, Santa Maria la Antigua Catholic University (2016).
The date of the funeral has not yet been established.

Covid-19 Medal instituted
To be awarded to Order of Malta members and volunteers who have risked their health
To express gratitude to those who provide assistance in an emergency situation and to give a tangible sign of the special contribution made by members and volunteers in specific campaigns, the Sovereign Council has established the ‘Sovereign Order of Malta Campaign Medal’, which complements the Order pro Merito Melitensi.
Given the global presence of the Sovereign Order of Malta in dealing with the pandemic, the first Campaign Medal is being awarded for the Covid-19 emergency. It acknowledges the Order’s members and volunteers who have put their health at risk to bring aid to those directly or indirectly affected by the virus.
The Grand Magistry will assess recipients of the medal – whose metal bar bears the inscription ‘Covid-19′ – proposed by the Order of Malta’s Grand Priories, National Associations and Relief Corps.
The medal must only be worn on military ceremonial uniforms and the ribbon on service uniforms, after the insignia of the Sovereign Order of Malta and other Merito Melitense decorations.
Michael is called Mika'il in Muslim works generally, but in the one instance in which he is mentioned in the Quran he is called Mikal. The single Quranic mention comes in the Q2:98, when the Jews of Medina challenged Muhammed to tell them the name of the angel from whom he received his revelations; when he told them it was Gabriel, the Jews said that Gabriel was their enemy, and that revelations came from Michael. The hadith quote Muhammed mentioning both Gabriel and Michael as two angels who showed him Paradise and hell, and in the early years of Islam the Muslims recited the names of both in the obligatory daily prayers. The place of Michael, and some of the other archangels, is not clearly identified in the major sources, and among ordinary Muslims knowledge of them is drawn from non-Islamic sources, notably Jewish.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Trench
The Battle of the Trench was a 27-day-long defense by Muslims of Yathrib (now Medina) from Arab and Jewish tribes. The strength of the confederate armies is estimated at around 10,000 men with six hundred horses and some camels, while the Medinan defenders numbered 3,000.
The largely outnumbered defenders of Medina, mainly Muslims led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, dug a trench on the suggestion of Salman the Persian, which, together with Medina's natural fortifications, rendered the confederate's cavalry (consisting of horses and camels) useless, locking the two sides in a stalemate. Hoping to make several attacks at once, the confederates persuaded the Muslim-allied Medinan Jews, Banu Qurayza, to attack the city from the south. However, Muhammad's diplomacy derailed the negotiations, and broke up the confederacy against him. The well-organized defenders, the sinking of confederate morale, and poor weather conditions caused the siege to end in a fiasco.
The siege was a "battle of wits", in which the Muslims tactically overcame their opponents while suffering very few casualties. Efforts to defeat the Muslims failed, and Islam became influential in the region. As a consequence, the Muslim army besieged the area of the Banu Qurayza tribe, leading to their surrender.
The defeat caused the Meccans to lose their trade and much of their prestige.
