MIPs helmets are critical. Skiing in the Alps is completely different than North America. Hidden crevasses and boulder fields every where. Just like Michael Schumacher in 2013 (he WAS wearing a helmet, but the rock entered his forehead) and Sonny Bono in '98 at Heavenly, hitting a tree with branch stump..

Not at all. Some of the "Cat Tracks" at Heavenly are tree lined with plenty of branch stumped trees snapped off by SnoCats out grooming. It was a late day accident, after lunch (no clue if booze involved) so a simple catch of an edge could throw you at one of those stumps and you'd be dead in an instant. (ex-racer and know that hill well).

And Michael Kennedy the year before at Copper. Same branch stump problem at the edges of some of the runs.

"Michael Kennedy died in 1997 after sustaining fatal injuries from colliding into a tree while skiing at the Copper Bowl Ski Run on Aspen Mountain. The son of Robert Kennedy was reportedly playing football on skis with other members of the Kennedy family at the time of the accident."
