Another possible motive is to make the entire J topic seem so over the top, stupid and unbelievable, that nobody will want to look into any of it. Like a shield.
I find that angle hard to believe because they would be better off not doing anything at all than to take that stance. (controlled opposition, Alex Jones like shielding op)
