Ghana blast: Many feared dead after huge explosion near Bogoso

At least 17 people have been killed in a huge explosion near a mining town in south-western Ghana, officials say.

Police say a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine collided with a motorcycle near the town of Bogoso.

Images shared by local media showed a large plume of black smoke rising above flattened buildings and scattered debris as residents call for help.

Graphic videos showed mutilated bodies of victims. A large crater can also be seen beside a road.

"It's almost like a ghost town now," Sedzi Sadzi Amedonu, a senior official from the country's disaster management agency, told the AFP news agency.

He said about 500 houses were affected - some of which were completely destroyed - in Appiatse between Bogoso and the village of Bawdie.

At least 59 people were injured, some of whom were in a critical condition, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said.

There are fears that the number of confirmed deaths may rise as emergency teams comb through the remains of the houses.

US, Latvia military troops gear up for Northern Michigan 'Winter Strike' training

GRAYLING, Mich. (FOX 2) - When the temperatures dip in Michigan, military troops head up north to train in the frigid weather.

Several hundred troops from active duty, National Guard, and reserve units around the U.S., as well as troops from NATO ally Latvia, will participate in "Winter Strike" from Friday through Jan. 30.

The cold weather version of Northern Strike, held at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center prepares military members for missions in subarctic conditions.

"Over the past nine years, the Northern Strike exercise series has grown into one of our nation’s best reserve component exercises. This is the third year for Northern Strike’s winter iteration, and we are continuing to evolve by further integrating special operations forces alongside our conventional and multinational forces," said Lt. Col. Adam Jenzen, Northern Strike land component exercise director. "The winter iterations of Northern Strike provide the perfect opportunity for units to complete arctic training objectives without the time and money required to travel to more remote locations like Alaska."

The summer version of Northern Strike will be held in August. Last summer, more than 3,100 military members from the U.S and U.K., Liberia, and Latvia participated. In the past, as many as 7,000 troops have participated.
