Saudis Attack Yemen Prison, At Least 70 Killed, Over 100 Wounded

Hospitals overwhelmed as attack levels prison

Hospitals in the northern Yemen city of Saada are completely overwhelmed Friday after overnight attacks by Saudi warplanes leveled several buildings in the local prison, causing over 200 casualties, with more dead and wounded being recovered all the time.

This left a lot of mangled ruins in parts of the compound, and a lot of buildings knocked down in their entirety. Recovery and rescue operations have been ongoing eve4r since, though the hospitals in the area have already accepted all they can handle.

At least 70 detainees were killed in the attack, and Doctors Without Borders reported one hospital received 200 wounded. Exact tolls are expected to rise, and many of the wounded are not expected to survive.

Doctors Without Borders’ local mission head Ahmed Mahat, confirmed that even with the high toll already, there are many bodies still at the scene of the airstrike, and many missing people. Calling it a “horrific act of violence,” he said it is impossible to know yet just how many have been killed.

Identities of the slain are still not available, but the prison held, among others, detained would-be migrants. In the past, attacks on prisons tended to hit sites where pro-Saudi forces were held, killing some of their own fighters, while in this case it appears to have been just a random civilian prison.

Saudi Arabia had announced their intentions to escalate attacks on Yemen earlier in the week, and in the past 24 hours they have hit Saada, Saana, and the port of Hodeidah. Attacks in Saana targeted the airport, Saada the prison, and in Hodeidah attacks knocked out Yemen’s Internet access, and also hit a youth soccer game, killing three children.

The Red Cross warned that the escalation was unacceptable, noting that civilians in densely populated areas are under growing attack from airstrikes. The UN had similarly expressed concern about the escalations.

The Saudis bragged of “precision” airstrikes in Hodeidah, not mentioning the soccer game, and early statements have not acknowledged the Saada prison attack at all.

That’s not surprising, as the Saudis have tended to try to manage the public perception of their huge civilian casualties, not by scaling back attacks, but by pretending they didn’t happen. With most media dutifully reporting the Hodeidah attacks as hitting “legitimate military targets,” the backlash for killing children is somewhat undercut.

The New York Times obtained the drone footage of the airstrike through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted to U.S. Central Command, which has since posted the clips to its website. The upload is the first public release of video footage related to the Aug. 29 strike, which the Pentagon initially defended as a well-executed military action, but later admitted was a tragic mistake.

The content includes around 25 minutes of footage from what the Times reported were two MQ-9 Reaper drones. The scene of the strike can be seen prior to, during, and after the attack, in which a civilian car in a courtyard on a residential street was obliterated by the high-payload missile.

Bennett: Israel is ours because it’s the Jewish homeland, not because of Holocaust

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Friday said Israel’s existence is not due to the Holocaust but because it is the ancient homeland of the Jewish people.

The comments came a day after the 80th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference, a meeting of senior Nazi officials by a Berlin lake that is seen as a key moment when Germany began implementing the plan to systematically round up and kill all Jews in Europe.

Bennett said that as prime minister, he was aware of the “tremendous responsibility” he has for “the existence of the Jewish state in the Land of Israel.”

“I don’t forget that at the moment of truth… that no one (except for rare exceptions) cared about the fate of our people. The world did not lift a finger,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

“The State of Israel isn’t ours ‘thanks to’ the Holocaust, but because the Land of Israel was, is still and will always remain the home of the Jewish people,” he added.

The premier said that a “strong, secure, independent, thriving, diverse, free and united” Israel was needed to “ensure the existence of the Jewish people.”

He also acknowledged deep differences among many Israelis, citing the country’s “countless arguments, [political] parties and opinions,” but said they have “one united heart.”

“Together we will safeguard our beloved country,” Bennett said.

Russia’s FSB and law enforcement have detained four members of the Infraud Organization hacking group. Its purported founder Andrey Novak is wanted in the US on the accusations of cybercrime. As a source in law enforcement told TASS, Novak was arrested while three other purported hackers are under a house arrest.

"During intelligence-gathering activities, Russian special services with the operational support of the law enforcement and cooperation of the US law enforcement, managed to establish and detain four members of the Infraud Organization hacking group whose main income was the use of stolen credit card data. The purported founder of the criminal group, Andrey Sergeevich Novak, wanted in the US on the accusations of cybercrime, has been arrested for two months, another three members of the group - Kirill Samokutyaev, Konstantin Vladimirovich Bergman and Mark Avramovich Bergman have been detained under a house arrest," the source said.

According to the source, the investigation continues to establish the other members of the international hacking group.

According to an informed source, Russia is not planning to extradite Novak to the US. "Russian legislation prohibits an extradition of its citizens to a foreign state," the source said. That said, if a foreign citizen wanted abroad is among the arrested, that individual will be extradited following the investigation and court proceedings in Russia, the source added.

As reported in February 2018, the US law enforcement detained 13 individuals accused of participation in the criminal scheme that inflicted the damage of at least $530 mln. The detainees were the citizens of the US, Australia, the UK, France, Italy and Serbia. Charges were brought against 36 individuals, including one Russian, Andrey Novak. According to the US Department of Justice, the criminal group was organized by a Ukrainian citizen in 2010.

Violent antisemitism spiked on social media during Gaza operation

A Diaspora Affairs Ministry report shows antisemitism and violent rhetoric online towards Jews and Zionists skyrocketed during Operation Guardian of the Walls.

Antisemitism and violent rhetoric against Jews online increased significantly during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021, a Diaspora Affairs Ministry report shows.

The ministry’s annual antisemitism report, released on Saturday, shows Israel has a “moral obligation to assist Diaspora communities in coping with antisemitism,” according to Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai.

The report, which focused on antisemitism online, used data gathered by the ministry’s Antisemitism Cyber Monitoring System, a real-time monitoring system based on artificial intelligence and semantic analysis technologies.

ACMS data highlighted an astounding 1,200% hike in antisemitic posts on five different social media platforms during May 2021 compared to data from 12 months prior.

Data also showed, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the overwhelming majority of violent rhetoric against Jews, Zionists and Israel was posted on Twitter.

Throughout 2021, there was a 31.3% increase in antisemitic tweets, compared to 2020’s figures. During the Gaza operation, data show an increase of 230% compared to only a month prior.

The ACMS analyzed all antisemitic posts and broke them down into three main categories: new antisemitism, classic antisemitism and Holocaust denial.

New antisemitism refers to hate speech directed at Zionism, Israel or Israeli institutions such as the IDF or Mossad instead of referring to Jews, which is classic antisemitism.

Five percent of all antisemitic Twitter posts in 2021 were considered to be Holocaust denial or distortion, while almost 75% were defined as new antisemitism.

“Israel and world Jewry have a shared destiny. When Israel conducts a military operation, it has a tremendous impact on the lives of Jews around the world,” Shai said.

“Israel, therefore, has a moral obligation to take steps to assist Diaspora communities in coping with the antisemitism that accompanies such operations, be it communal resilience in the face of increased antisemitic attacks, clear information and reasons for Israel’s activities, or other appropriate forms of support.”

Shai will present the data gathered in the report to the Israeli government during Sunday’s cabinet meeting ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday.

The resolution on Holocaust denial was approved by consensus. Iran was the only country to speak out against the text, but it has limited powers to act in the UNGA because of its unpaid dues. It has attempted to argue that its opposition has meant that the text was not approved by consensus, even though the UN has publicized the passage of the resolution.

CBP Released More than 55,000 Migrants at the Border in December

CBP’s statistics on the number of illegal migrants apprehended at the Southwest border in December are late — again — but on January 19, Fox News reported that encounters there were up in that normally slow travel month, to more than 178,800 from fewer than 174,000 in November. Most shockingly, however, that report revealed that the agency released more than 55,000 of those migrants into the United States. The Biden administration is dismantling the immigration system before our eyes.

The Fox reporting is based upon disclosures that the government is required to make under Texas v. Biden, a case that I have analyzed extensively in the past. At issue there is whether DHS erred in its terminating the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), better known as “Remain in Mexico”.

DHS Is Required to Detain Illegal Migrants — Unless They Are Paroled or Returned to Mexico. It would be more correct to state that Texas is facially about DHS’s attempted termination of MPP, but factually the case has much more to do with how the Biden administration is handling the ongoing disaster at the Southwest border.

Under section 235 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), DHS has two options when it encounters aliens at the border who either entered illegally or sought admission at the ports without proper documents.

First, section 235(b)(1) of the INA enables DHS to process those illegal migrants for “expedited removal”, under which they can be removed without appearing before an immigration judge, unless the alien claims a fear of harm upon return or requests asylum.

If aliens in expedited removal do claim fear, they are interviewed by an asylum officer to determine whether they have a “credible fear” of return. If the asylum officer makes a positive credible fear finding (which usually happens, because the standard is low), the alien is placed into removal proceedings before an immigration judge to apply for asylum.

Alternatively, under section 235(b)(2) of the INA, DHS can skip expedited removal, charge those aliens with inadmissibility, and place them directly into removal proceedings.

Regardless of whether those migrants are processed under section 235(b)(1) of the INA for expedited removal or section 235(b)(2) of the INA for regular removal, however, they are supposed to be detained throughout the entire process — from apprehension to removal or admission.

There is an exception to that detention mandate, which allows DHS to “parole” inadmissible aliens under section 212(d)(5)(A) of the INA. Parole is a very limited authority that Congress has provided to DHS, and it enables the agency to allow inadmissible aliens to enter the United States without being formally admitted. In this context, those aliens are released from custody while their cases are pending.

New Zealand will make household contacts of Covid cases isolate for 24 days under harsh new rules brought in to combat an impending Omicron outbreak.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has brought in the strict measures as the country battles to stay Covid Zero despite the threat of the highly contagious mutant strain.

But critics say the lengthy quarantine period is 'unworkable' and will lead people to avoid getting tested.

Anyone infected with Covid is now required to isolate for 14 days, up from 10 days under the new interim rules.

Household contacts must then stay in quarantine for a further 10 days, stretching the time alone out to three and a half weeks.
