This claim is no different than modern assertions that scripture has been changed by bad actors.

It is an assertion that holds no water after the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls which were discovered in 1946. these documents predate Jesus and match the manuscripts which were handed down to us.

A 1901 claim could be made only because there was no way to confirm it or refute it. We now know the claim to be palpably false.
