Donald Trump, in particular, gets him [Crosby] all riled up. ‘It’s distressing when half the country is stupid enough to think he’s a great guy, because he’s not. He’s a complete flaming ***hole. I love my country, but it’s very tough to be an American right now.’
What’s the solution? ‘When we go to Europe we just wear a little maple leaf on our shoulder.’ He laughs. ‘Nobody likes Americans. The whole world loves Canadians.’
Crosby remains an old-school liberal firebrand – with one notable exception. His criminal convictions involved the illegal use of firearms, and he seems conflicted about America’s attitude to guns.
‘European people don’t have guns, so we don’t expect you guys to understand it,’ he says. Does he support the Second Amendment?
‘Are you kidding? We don’t need a militia, and nobody needs an automatic weapon, but setting aside the whole philosophical question, just look at the practical considerations. In America, two-thirds of households have guns. They aren’t going to give them up. If you try to take them away there will be a war. All you can do is try to regulate the people that get them a lot better.’…
Earlier this year, Crosby was scathing about the accuracy of some stories in Nash’s autobiography; and when Neil Young left his wife for actress Daryl Hannah, Crosby described Hannah as a ‘purely poisonous predator’. (He has since apologised).
