What if it turned out that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?

That you are not a human who occasionally has a spiritual experience, but an eternal spirit having a temporary human experience.

That the design of your in-game player character is similar to that of your Mars rovers: a local computer used for simple terrain navigation, and a remote supercomputer used for sophisticated goals and determining meaning.

That emotions are not only useful, but they are the point.

That thoughts are designed to be simply local calculations performed by your local computer to enable your player character to harmonize with the emotional read-out from your remote supercomputer.

That it is possible for the navigational computer of a Mars rover cut off from its supercomputer to experience anomie: "why am I drilling holes in rocks again; what's the point of it all; blackpills."

Emotions are the point, as they are how your player character experiences the "thoughts" of your supercomputer/spirit while in-game.
