>Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Monday filed lawsuits against nine public school districts with mask requirements

Missouri Republican Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Monday filed lawsuits against nine public school districts with mask requirements.

Schmitt, a candidate for the seat of retiring U.S. Republican Senator Roy Blunt, filed suit against 36 school districts on Friday. Todayโ€™s districts being sued include the Kirkwood School District and the Special School District of St. Louis, both serving where Schmitt resides in Glendale, Mo.

โ€œAs weโ€™ve made clear from the beginning, the power to make health decisions for their children should be in the hands of parents, not bureaucrats,โ€ Schmitt said in a statement. โ€œToday Iโ€™m filing nine more lawsuits against school districts that are illegally enforcing mask mandates on schoolchildren. Masking children all day in school is ineffective and these endless pandemic restrictions lead to lasting, negative psychological impacts on children and teens. This is a fight worth fighting, and Iโ€™m not going to back down.โ€

When Schmitt threatened lawsuits early last week, the leaders of public school district collaboratives on opposite sides of the state said Missouri law prohibits children with contagious diseases from attending school, and another allows school boards to adopt rules and regulations. ..

Sheldon Silver, a Democratic politician from Manhattan who served more than 20 years as the speaker of the New York State Assembly before being convicted on federal corruption charges, died Monday at the age of 77.

A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to The Center Square Silver died at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Mass., located between Worcester and Nashua, N.H.

Silver was in custody at the Devens Federal Medical Center in Ayer. He was serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence after being convicted in 2018 on four counts of mail fraud, extortion and engaging in monetary transactions involving criminal proceeds.

He was sentenced in July 2020 and also fined $1 million. His scheduled release date was March 10, 2026.

Described in court documents as โ€œthe hardware store ownerโ€™s son that never left the Lower East Side,โ€ Silver served in the state legislature for more than 38 years, winning his first election in 1976.

He became speaker in February 1994, becoming one of the most powerful officials in the state, often working with the governor and the Senate majority leader on agreements regarding legislation.

Silver served in that role until he stepped down in February 2015, just days after he was arrested by federal authorities on charges he took $4 million in illicit payments from developers and a cancer researcher. ..

https://justthenews.com/government/courts-law/tuedoj-crime-reduction-grantees-tied-soros-anti-police-changes-linked-urban

The Department of Justice has awarded crime-reduction grants to some groups that back the same anti-police, soft-on-crime policies implemented by George Soros-funded district attorneys that critics argue have unleashed a surge in urban crime.

Those policies โ€” including the defunding or restructuring of police departments, bail reform, less incarceration, decriminalizing and deprioritizing a broad range of criminal offenses โ€” have been linked to skyrocketing criminal violence in many Democrat-led cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York City.

The DOJ's Bureau of Justice Assistance has awarded the grants to organizations and municipalities to "reduce serious and violent crime" and "make neighborhoods safer" under its 2021 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program. Some of those grantees, Just The News found, have ties to district attorneys and groups funded by progressive megadonor Soros.

In Los Angeles, for instance, the Urban Peace Institute (UPI) received $1 million for its South Los Angeles Peacemakers program to make the city safer. The UPI has called for the "radical restructuring" of American policing, including shifting power from police to community "peacemakers." The nonprofit was instrumental in progressive Los Angeles DA George Gascon's criminal justice changes in the city, according to a report.

"In December 2020, newly-elected Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon unveiled sweeping changes to the criminal justice system in Los Angeles County," the California Wellness Foundation reported. "These groundbreaking changes were a direct result of decades of tireless advocacy, education, awareness-raising and research by activists, grassroots organizations and community members in Los Angeles County. Among these grassroots groups were the Urban Peace Institute (UPI), a grantee in our Community Well-Being portfolio, which has championed community-led solutions to public safety, justice and public health for over 17 years.โ€ ..
