Sex trafficking panic is consuming Iowa politics

Conspiracy theories have been building for years and now they’re popping up everywhere from city council meetings to the Iowa Capitol.

Adam Sullivan

The idea of a grand sex trafficking cabal has gained increasing prominence since 2016 through the “Pizzagate” and “QAnon” conspiracy theories and Jeffery Epstein’s prosecution but it didn’t come out of nowhere in the Trump era and didn’t stem only from right-wing politics. The ill-informed case against sex trafficking has been building for many years.

Author of that article attempts to smear the patriot city council member by conflating her concerns with pizzagate which is real btw and Qanon there is Q and there is anon.

When she's rightfully concerned about degenerate drag queens reading stories to minors and grooming them.

Weird that someone named Stephen Colbert would pop up in this minidig about degenerate drag queens and grooming.

Iowa City Public Library welcomes Drag Storytime

What’s so touching about a 2-year-old girl jumping around in a construction hat, while a little boy runs his fingers through a silky boa?

Who gets emotional watching a grown man in a dress and eye shadow show toddlers how to play with egg shaker sound-makers?

How silly do I feel tearing up about a glittery-bearded figure in a shiny pink suit, French beanie, golden shoes and over-sized heart-shaped sunglasses?

MORE:The people who helped change gender identity in Iowa's Democratic Party

Drag Storytime, a nationwide trend that hit Iowa City for the first time last weekend, brings it all out: the celebratory spirit fostered by rainbows and color everywhere, the urge to jump and dance and sing and play, tears of relief and liberation, tears of gratitude for how far we’ve all come.

If your childhood includes any harsh moments of being mistaken for the other gender and then shamed for it, if you ever witnessed a relative or friend get teased or bullied for being too “girly” or “acting like a boy,” if you ever got picked on (or lectured) for what you were wearing, you, too, might get a little emotional at Drag Storytime.

In fact, when you consider that three-fourths of our public schools’ nonbinary students feel unsafe, as do many gay, lesbian or bisexual teens, it’s hard not to feel it deep.

Fairfield community speaks up about discrimination after councilwoman's LGBTQ+ comments

by Tasha TurnerTuesday, January 25th 2022

FAIRFIELD, Iowa — Anti-discrimination advocates are speaking up after they say a recent statement made by a Fairfield city councilwoman links homosexuality with pedophilia.

During Fairfield’s city council meeting Monday, many residents spoke during the public forum section of the meeting, all expressing their thoughts about a Jan. 10 discussion between council members.

Fairfield’s equity and diversity committee presented the council with a letter of intent, which would announce the city’s stand against discrimination. It was during that presentation two weeks ago that Councilwoman Judy Ham voiced her strong opposition to those efforts. Ham claimed the letter promotes grooming of children to prepare them for sex trafficking.

One Fairfield resident that spoke said there is no P in LGBTQ+.

“It is not true,” said Eric Schaffer. “…that homosexual and pedophilia, those are not related.”

Another resident to speak was Hannah Maselli. They asked the city council to do better.

Set a better example than the one you are currently setting because [the current example being set is] disappointing,” said Maselli. “That is why we [the queer community] are here today—to provide a better example for our youth, for my son, and [my son’s] friends. I do not want [the youth] to be disappointed in our elected officials as I am.”

Ayla Sypersma, another resident who spoke, reminded council members that words can hurt.

“We ask you to see how remarks such as the ones made by the city council woman are harmful to the very youth she claims to be worried about,” said Sypersma.

After residents had the opportunity to speak, the debate continued amongst council members. They argued about whether to vote on the letter of intent right then and there.

City Councilman Doug Flournoy said he might be breaking his oath of office if voting on the letter of intent. When fellow council members asked how, he talked about the section that refers to not discriminate based on immigration status.

Councilman Paul Grandy then reminded Flournoy that the council received the letter of intent on Nov. 22.

“We have had time to read it,” said Grandy. “This is something we can make a decision on now.”

Despite the challenge of coming to an agreement, the letter of intent was voted on and approved with a 4-3 vote.

“We can do better as a community,” said the mayor of Fairfield Connie Boyer. “We will never get rid of all bullies. I wish I would say we would, but we will not. [Bullies have been around for eons and they will continue, but we can all try a little harder.”
