House anti-China Bill Encourages Hiring of Chinese Scientists

House Democrats have drafted a bill to counter China’s technological gains — but their bill encourages universities and companies to fill research jobs with more Chinese migrants instead of innovative Americans.

“They’re doubling down on the same failed policies that have gotten us to where we are today,” said Kevin Lynn, the founder of U.S. Tech Workers. He continued:

This investing in foreigners versus our own citizenry, this [corporate] efficiency model that is looking to always improve that bottom line, the profit margins, and not doing the things necessary to train the [American] people that will be innovative and more productive, has actually made our companies and the country less productive and less innovative.

These immigration provisions represent an investment in foreigners versus an investment in Americans, and none of that should be done with taxpayer dollars.

The House bill is titled the America COMPETES Act of 2022 and is a version of the Senate-passed Competes Act.

The Senate bill was widely panned for dodging core problems about the corporate transfer of research and manufacturing to China. It passed in June and promises to spend $250 billion on subsidies to help shore up U.S. competition with China. But the Senate bill does little to reduce growing U.S. reliance on Chinese labor in U.S. laboratories or the movement of manufacturing — and the entwined science and expertise — into China.

The bill also does little to counter Chinese government spying, technology theft, or market manipulations. “We have to have safeguards,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told Breitbart News in November.

The House bill version of the bill, introduced January 25, adds immigration measures to help universities and investors.

The House bill allows foreigners who get PhDs to ask the DHS secretary for green cards. The PhDs would have to be from a “program of study involving science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, the bill says. However, the eligible PhDs include accounting, taxation, conservation, and agriculture, the draft bill says on page 1,710.

The foreigners would first have to pay for their PhDs at qualified universities. The bill suggests that at least 266 U.S. universities would be eligible to put their customers on a fast track to citizenship. But the bill also puts Historically Black Universities and other minority-serving universities on the list.

The Democrats’ bill also allows some foreign universities to put their graduates on a fast track to U.S. citizenship and U.S. science careers. Forty-nine of the world’s top 100 universities are located outside the United States, including three universities in China, according to one rating system.

In Wake of Belarus Migrant Crisis, Poland Commences Building €350 million Permanent Border Fence

Poland has begun the construction of a €350 million border fence to help stem the tide of illegal migrants attempting to cross into the EU nation via Belarus.

Poland’s Straż Graniczna Border Guard announced that the construction of a new border wall along the Polish-Belarussian border to help prevent migrants from illegally entering the nation had commenced on the 25th of January 2022.

The border fence is planned to be five and a half metres high — five metres of “steel poles”, “topped with a coil of wire” — which the Straż Graniczna say will make it “impossible to pass”. The construction will stretch for 115 miles and will be equipped with motion detectors and cameras, to provide additional security measures and help the border guards catch illegals making an attempt to cross.

The building of Poland’s new border fence is predicted to cost 1.6 billion Polish zloty (£350 million, $395m) and the construction of the barrier is expected to be completed in June 2022.

Polish authorities have declined to specify the exact locations of where the border fence will be built, citing concerns about Belarus trying to disrupt the work.

“The Belarusian services are just waiting for this [the location of the border fence] to send groups of migrants there, so for security reasons we don’t indicate the precise locations”, said Captain Krystyna Jakimik-Jarosz, a spokesperson for the Polish Border Force, Euronews reports.

Syrian, Russian Migrants Apprehended at West Texas Border

Border Patrol agents arrested two significant interest aliens at one of the busiest migrant crossing points on the southwest border Wednesday, along with hundreds of mostly Central and South American family units.

According to a source within Customs and Border Protection, the Syrian and Russian migrants are single adult males and their purpose for entering is still under investigation. The source says the Syrian adds to the nearly 50 special interest aliens apprehended in the area since October 2021.

Although not a country on the Department of Homeland Security’s list of special interest countries, Russia is designated as a Country of Particular Concern by the Department of State. Under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, the President is required to annually review the status of religious freedom in every country and designate those engaged in or tolerating “particularly severe violations of religious freedom.”

The law defines particularly severe violations as “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom,” including violations such as: torture, prolonged detention without charges, forced disappearance, or other flagrant denial of life, liberty, or security of persons.

Russia was designated by the State Department in November 2021. The source says the increase in apprehension of Special Interest Aliens (SIA) and those from CPC countries is cause for concern. The intent of such migrants, according to the source, is more difficult to determine than those who enter for mostly economic reasons.

The designation of SIA is related to the travel pattern and conditions within the home country, rather than specific threats. According to DHS, the designation of SIA is different than the designation of an individual migrant known or suspected of terrorism. The terms “Special Interest Alien” and “Known or Suspected Terrorist” (KST) are not interchangeable.

This fiscal year, the source says migrants from Eritrea, Uzbekistan, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Syria, and Russia have been encountered crossing the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass. The source says the migrants within this grouping usually attempt to elude apprehension as the Border Patrol contends with processing, transportation, and caring for nearly a thousand migrants who chose to surrender daily within the sector.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, the Del Rio Sector has led the eight other southwest sectors in migrant apprehensions in January.

Until recently, the Rio Grande Valley Sector held the top position in migrant apprehensions since 2013.

Russian nuclear submarines already on duty off US coasts

Against the backdrop of the US's outrageously aggressive attitude towards Russia, it was reported that at least two Russian nuclear submarines with nuclear weapons on board could already be deployed off the coast of the United States.

According to unconfirmed reports, one of the Russian submarines is located near the east coast of the United States, while the second one is off the west coast. Presumably, another Russian submarine could be staying in Arctic waters.

Tensions in the relationship between the United States and Russia are reaching a climax. Russia took measures to try to solve the crisis through diplomacy, but the United States prefers to turn to increasingly aggressive measures instead by building up NATO troops in Eastern Europe, closer to the Russian borders.

The Russian nuclear submarines on duty off the coasts of the United States will thus be able to respond to any act of aggression immediately.

"The Russian submarines can presumably be located off both the western and the eastern coasts of the United States. Given their stealthiness, the Pentagon may not even be aware of their whereabouts. It is more than likely that another Russian submarine is staying in the Arctic, deep under the ice,” Sina Military publication said.

It is impossible to either confirm or deny these reports today. Russian nuclear-powered submarines with nuclear weapons on board are indeed on duty both in the Pacific and in the Atlantic Ocean. They are probably located a thousand kilometers off the US coast, Avia.pro publication reports.

PROJECT COAST: Israeli/US/South African secret bio/chemical weapons program

As follows from leaked files and a number of media publications, the Ebola virus had been extensively studied back in 1980 in South Africa as a potential biological weapon. This project that goes under the codename Project Coast was launched by Dr. Wouter Basson, also known as “Dr. Death”, who practiced medicine in South Africa during apartheid times and was a personal physician to Pieter Willem Botha, who was the sitting prime minister of South Africa at that time. The project aimed at creating biological and chemical weapons, which were to destroy or sterilize the black population, bringing death to all the political opponents of apartheid.

In principle, the idea behind Project Coast, is not new. As reported in a recent publication of The Age magazine, an Australian microbiologist and Nobel laureate Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet urged the Australian government to develop biological weapons against “over-populated countries of Southeast Asia” in 1947. During a secret meeting in 1947 with The New Weapons and Equipment Development Committee microbiologists recommended “to form a research group tasked to create biological weapons that could be unleashed by contaminating foods supplies in order to control the population of Indonesia and other Asian countries.”

Among the components for the new biological weapons developed under Project Coast, the United States picked Marburg and Ebola fever viruses whose strains were shipped to a secret laboratory in South Africa. A report titled “The Rollback of South Africa’s Chemical and Biological Warfare Program,” that was published in 2001 by Dr. Stephen F. Burgess, a professor of the Department of International Security Studies, US Air War College, and Helen E. Purkitt, a professor of international relations at the U.S. Naval Academy, states that back in 1984, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shipped eight tubes with Ebola and Marburg strains to South Africa. These authors behind the report claim that not only were the CIA and MI6 informed about Project Coast, but the Bush administration and Margaret Thatcher were as well.

Bioweapons expert Jeanne Guillemin wrote in her book “Biological Weapons: From the Invention of State-Sponsored Programs to Contemporary Bioterrorism,” that “the project‘s growth years were from 1982 to 1987, when it developed a range of biological agents (such as those for anthrax, cholera, and the Marburg and Ebola viruses and for botulism toxin)…“

The history of Basson’s project is surrounded by profound mystery. As he himself stated in front of the Supreme Court of Appeal: “CIA agents in Pretoria threatened me with death in two steps from the US embassy entrance on Schoeman Street, they demanded me to keep the details of our studies a secret.” According to an article published in 2001 in New Yorker, the US Embassy in Pretoria was fairly terrified by the prospect that Basson could reveal the role Washington played in Project Coast.

In 2013, Basson, dubbed “Doctor Death” by the South African media, was found guilty of unprofessional conduct by the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Project Coast: Who’s Behind the Recent Ebola Outbreak?

The report issued by the World Health Organization states that the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest and most complex since the detection of the virus in 1976. This outbreak has reached an all time high in both the number infected with the virus and those deceased from it than in all the previous outbreaks combined. The outbreak started in March 2014 in Guinea and it soon jumped across the border to Sierra Leone and Liberia, and then the infected brought the virus via air and land transport to Nigeria and Senegal. But this time around, the virus was not simply spreading across Africa, but it had managed to reach other continents.

However, if one is to study the facts carefully, then a question arises: how is it that a virus that was first identified in 1976 “suddenly” became so active and able to spread across the African continent and beyond?

To get an answer one must study the history of US secret experiments in this area, although Washington strives to hide it from public attention.

USGS: 6.2-Magnitude Quake Strikes Pangai, Tonga

Earlier this month, Tonga was hit by a powerful underwater volcanic eruption and a tsunami.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck about 219 km west-northwest of Pangai, Tonga, on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

According to seismologists, the quake occurred at a depth of 14.5 km.

No damage or injuries have so far been reported.

On 15 January, an undersea volcanic eruption occurred near Tonga, a small country in Oceania, comprised of more than 170 South Pacific islands. The eruption triggered a tsunami alert for the majority of the US West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska. It also caused huge ash clouds rising about 20 kilometers high, and affecting a search and rescue operation in the most remote areas.

At least three people were killed in the tsunami, including a British woman who kept an animal shelter in Tonga and was washed away while trying to save her dogs. Two more people drowned off a beach in northern Peru amid very high waves caused by the eruption in Tonga.

Russia, Ukraine Agree to Uphold Donbas Ceasefire in Normandy Format Talks

The two sides agreed to hold more talks in two weeks

Officials from Russia and Ukraine met in Paris on Wednesday and held what Moscow described as “tough” talks. Despite whatever difficulties there were, the two sides agreed that the ceasefire in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region must be upheld.

German and French officials were also present for the meeting, which lasted eight hours. The four countries started holding talks together after the Donbas war started in 2014 in a forum known as the Normandy format.

Russia and Ukraine signed the Minsk agreements during Normandy format talks in 2014 and 2015 that established a ceasefire in the Donbas. While there have been occasional flare-ups, the war has essentially been at a stalemate since 2015.

Russian envoy Dmitry Kozak said that “despite all the differences in interpretations (of the Minsk agreements), we agreed that the ceasefire must be maintained by all the parties in line with the accords.” He also said the next Normandy format meeting will take place in two weeks in Berlin.

The talks were held at the Elysee, the residence of French President Emmanuel Macron. In a statement, the Elysee said that the envoys “support unconditional respect for the ceasefire and full adherence to the ceasefire strengthening measures of July 22, 2020, regardless of differences on other issues relating to the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”

Under the Minsk agreements, Ukraine agreed to give a level of autonomy to the breakaway Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, which hasn’t happened yet. In December, The Associated Press reported that the Biden administration was considering pressuring Ukraine to grant the separatists autonomy, a move that could significantly de-escalate tensions in the region.

Biden releases statement honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day – here it is

Seventy-seven years after the liberation of Auschwitz, people worldwide are observing International Holocaust Remembrance Day by honoring the lives of six million Jews who were systematically exterminated by the Nazis.

On Jan. 27, 1945, the Soviet Army freed the people in Auschwitz, the Nazi’s largest concentration and death camp in World War II where more than one million Jewish people were killed.

President Joe Biden released a statement commemorating the day.

Today, we attempt to fill a piercing silence from our past—to give voice to the six million Jews who were systematically and ruthlessly murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators, and to remember the millions of Roma, Sinti, Slavs, disabled persons, LGBTQ+ individuals, and political dissidents who were killed during the Shoah. It was a destructive force so unimaginable that it gave rise to an entirely new vocabulary of evil: words like “holocaust,” “genocide,” and “crimes against humanity.” We join with nations of the world to grieve one of the darkest chapters in human history—and to bear witness for future generations so that we can make real our sacred vow: “never again.”

Today, and every day, we have a moral obligation to honor the victims, learn from the survivors, pay tribute to the rescuers, and carry forth the lessons of last century’s most heinous crime. From the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, to a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, we are continually and painfully reminded that hate doesn’t go away; it only hides. And it falls to each of us to speak out against the resurgence of antisemitism and ensure that bigotry and hate receive no safe harbor, at home and around the world.

Navy Boots 23 Sailors for Refusing Vaccines as Leaders Push Rule Changes for Next Stage of Pandemic

The Navy announced on Wednesday that it has separated 23 sailors for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine even as the service moves to adapt how it deals with the ongoing pandemic.

The latest batch of sailors brings the total number separated for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine to 45, according to the Navy's regular updates. The first 22 were discharged as entry-level separations, meaning that they had been in the service less than 180 days. The latest group was made up of active-duty sailors who received honorable discharges. The service lags behind the Marine Corps which, as of last week, has separated 334 Marines.

Pushing out or shifting sailors who haven’t gotten the vaccine to shore duty has helped the Navy reach a milestone leadership repeated during a roundtable with reporters on Wednesday – all operational sailors have been fully vaccinated.

Vice Adm. Bill Merz, the Navy's operations and strategy boss, credited the acceptance of vaccination by sailors as helping the service avoid severe COVID-19 illness. "We have not had to medevac a single sailor due to COVID," he said.

The announcement of the decision to discharge the additional sailors came just over a week after the Navy released its latest guidance on how ships and other operational units should deal with the virus. The new document is meant to ensure that Navy commanders are following the latest CDC guidance, and senior leaders said it is an "update taking into account what we've learned, our demographic, and the vaccination status."

Merz said that major changes include encouraging sailors to get booster shots when eligible, loosening isolation requirements to five days for asymptomatic personnel, and "thumb rules and guidance on when … mitigations might have to be increased or might be reduced."

He explained that part of what drove the need for new guidance is the almost ever-present nature of COVID-19 on the Navy's ships.

"We always have a handful of ships that have some small number of positive cases on board," he explained, but quickly added that the cases lead to "very few incidents and symptoms."

The admiral highlighted the move to shorten isolation time because "you can quickly find yourself in a nonoperational ship just because you have so many kids in isolation, whether they have symptoms or not."

Merz noted that the service has seen "all variants on our ships" and specifically the latest, omicron. The senior Navy leader confirmed that the last publicly known outbreak aboard a ship, the USS Milwaukee, was the new, more virulent strain of COVID-19.

No justice - for protecting a pedophile

Litzman signs plea deal in Leifer case, avoiding jail time and paying symbolic fine

If terms are approved by judge, former health minister will pay $940 fine for hindering extradition of sex offender to Australia; charges dropped in second corruption case

United Torah Judaism MK Yaakov Litzman signed a plea deal on Thursday, admitting to breach of trust for using his former position as deputy health minister to thwart the extradition to Australia of Malka Leifer, a former principal of an Orthodox girls school in Melbourne accused of sexually assaulting minors.

The charge of obstruction of justice was dropped as part of the agreement, and Litzman will not be convicted of moral turpitude in the case. The deal still needs to be approved by a judge.

Under the terms of the deal, Litzman will avoid jail time and instead be sentenced to probation, as well as a fine of NIS 3,000 (approximately $940).

Until recently, Litzman denied that he was taking part in plea deal negotiations. He announced last month that he would not run for the Knesset again, although he said that his decision was unrelated to the accusations against him.

The plea deal was finalized just four days before the end of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit’s term.

In a statement issued by his lawyers, Litzman said he “takes responsibility for one, irregular event.” The statement claimed that the then-minister “acted in response to a public request he received, without acquaintance with the applicant, and without any personal affiliation or motives.”

The Movement for Quality Government decried the deal, and said it has lodged a petition on the matter at the Supreme Court.

“The attorney general’s end-of-season deals continue until the last minute. For shame!” the organization said in a statement, apparently also referring to Shas party leader Aryeh Deri’s tax offenses plea deal earlier in the week.

“Once again, a shameful plea agreement was signed with an elected official,” the watchdog said. “We will all pay a price for this conduct.”

The Magen advocacy group for child abuse victims said that the decision caused pain to those abused by Leifer.

“Unfortunately, today is a difficult time that has caused the Malka Leifer victims great grief. We sympathize with the anger of the victims of the plea deal and hope that the confession will give validity to the serious acts, and that next time politicians will understand that they are not above the law,” the group said.

Charges were dropped relating to a second case in which Litzman was accused of preventing the closure of a deli cited for health violations. The deli was close to Litzman’s home and he was acquainted with its owners.

Taxpayer-Funded Study Pays Gay Minors To Report Sexual Activity Without Parental Permission

NIH spent $8 million on project since 2012

The National Institutes of Health has spent more than $8 million on a research study that pays gay and transgender boys as young as 13 hundreds of dollars to report their sexual behavior on a mobile app, all without parental permission.

NIH-funded researchers at Columbia University offer up to $275 to gay and transgender boys, between the ages of 13 and 18, to document their sexual activity on MyPEEPS Mobile, including whether they have "condomless anal sex." The NIH spent more than $300,000 to develop the app in 2012 and 2013, and $7.9 million since 2016 for Columbia researchers to study the data it collects, according to a government spending database. The app for "young men who have sex with men" provides "interactive games and activities" designed to teach participating teenagers how to minimize risk in their sex lives, according to the research grant and resulting study.

While researchers say MyPEEPS Mobile provides educational information for gay adolescents on how to have safe sex, some medical experts say there are ethical concerns. According to one of the program's studies, teenaged participants in the pilot trial were "recruited" to use the app in six different cities and traveled to attend "interventions" to discuss the sex education program, all without parental permission.

"There is an ethical balance between investigators' desire to enroll children in a study and the need to support parents in caring for their children," Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst, former deputy assistant administrator in the Bureau for Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development, told the Washington Free Beacon. "There are additional concerns that minor children in this study may be engaged in sexually exploitative relationships with older males, sex trafficking/child prostitution, violence, and sexual abuse, from which they should be protected."

Wubbenhorst, a former member of the Duke University Health System Institutional Review Board, said minors are considered a vulnerable population and are unable to give informed consent in research studies. Department of Health and Human Services regulations require researchers to apply for a waiver of parental permission for minors through designated institutional review boards, which determine if "an appropriate mechanism for protecting the children who will participate as subjects in the research is substituted."

The project leader of the MyPEEPS study, Dr. Rebecca Schnall, said her team was able to obtain a parental permission waiver from the institutional review board because the study poses minimal risk to its subjects.

"If parental permission were sought, then our study participants may not be willing to participate in this study because they will fear their parents' knowledge of their sexuality and sexual activities," Schnall told the Free Beacon.

Columbia University's review board approved the waiver for the MyPEEPs project, Schnall said.

Dr. Aaron Rothstein, a fellow in bioethics at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said he is surprised the Columbia University researchers got a waiver for parental permission, especially considering the teenagers were paid and provided travel to attend group-based discussions.

Reports Confirm Hundreds Of ISIS Terrorists Escaped Al-Hasakah Prison Under Deal With SDF

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has allowed 200 terrorists of ISIS to withdraw from Geweran prison in the northeastern Syrian city of al-Hasakah in exchange for the release of 23 of its own fighters who were being held as hostages, the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper reported on January 27, citing an official in the US-backed group.

ISIS terrorists attacked Geweran prison on January 20 where some 4,000 of their comrades were being held. The prison break attempt escalated into a six-day battle between the terrorists and the SDF.

“Negotiations took place yesterday, Wednesday [January 26], between the SDF and the Islamic State organization, which resulted in the release of about 200 members of the Islamic State organization, who were smuggled to al-Badia, in exchange for the latter’s release of 23 members of the SDF,” the unnamed official told al-Quds al-Arabi.

Al-Badia is a term usually used to refer to the desert region in northeastern Syria which lays along the border with Iraq, as well as to the desert region in central Syria.

Al-Quds al-Arabi identified two of ISIS commanders who managed to escape from Geweran prison after the January 20 attack as Abu Dujanah, an Iraqi commander who was responsible for Raqqa, and Abu Hamzah Sharqiyah, a Syrian commander who was responsible for the eastern countryside of Aleppo.

Other sources told the newspaper that dozens of ISIS terrorists who escaped from Geweran during the attack are still hiding in al-Hasakah city and other SDF-held parts of northeastern Syria.

It’s worth noting that only 1,600 terrorist surrendered to the SDF, or were apprehended by the group after the January 20. The fate of more than 2,000 others remains unknown.

The SDF’s victory declaration on January 26 appears to be nothing but a propaganda stunt. As of January 27, clashes continue around Geweran prison, where between 60 to 90 terrorists are still holding up, according to the SDF’s own statements.

The terrorists carried out two attacks on SDF fighters killing or wounding eight, according to ISIS’ Amaq news agency. They also managed to attack a group of journalists and personnel from the US-led coalition.

The SDF and the US-led coalition are clearly trying to mislead the public on the real situation in Geweran prison, likely to hide their security failure and their new deal with ISIS.

University Of Pittsburgh Report Tries To Explain Away Barbaric Experiments With Aborted Babies

After news broke last spring that the University of Pittsburgh is using aborted babies for taxpayer-funded medical research, often in barbaric experiments, Pitt asked an independent firm to conduct an investigation into their researchers’ compliance with state and federal laws. The findings of that investigation were released last week, but the report arguably raises more questions than it answers.

Hyman, Phelps and McNamara (HPM), the D.C.-based law firm hired to conduct the “regulatory assessment,” said they found Pitt’s academic research with human fetal tissue to be “fully compliant with applicable laws.” But a close reading of the 40-page report shows that HPM intentionally limited the scope of their investigation, allowing investigators to turn a blind eye to some of the most damning allegations related to fetal tissue research.

Where Do Babies Come From?

HPM admits they did not investigate the two university clinics where university researchers source their aborted fetal tissue: the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, where more abortions are performed than in any other hospital in the state.

HPM reasoned they could only investigate activities for which Pitt has regulatory control, and that excludes UPMC because it is a private nonprofit that the university “has no role in managing or supervising.” This is a significant omission because some of the most atrocious allegations, including labor-induced, partial-birth abortions, occur at UPMC. Investigators instead focused on fetal tissue that is collected and distributed by the Pitt Biospecimen Core (PBC). What investigators failed to mention is that PBC laboratories are located inside UPMC hospitals, including one in the Magee-Womens Hospital.

HPM tried to justify the serious omission with a caveat that even though they cannot hold Pitt responsible for UPMC, they did evaluate “whether Pitt satisfied its independent duty to confirm compliance of specified activities related to fetal tissue undertaken by UPMC.” In the limited investigating they did do of UPMC, HPM found issues with incomplete forms at UPMC used for obtaining consent from pregnant women to use their babies’ organs for research. Those forms were included in the report and tell us a lot about how consent is obtained.

HPM’s report said they did “consider” whether there were any conflicts of interest between Pitt and Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania, and found there were no “illegal arrangements,” but did not provide any details on who they spoke to or how they arrived at that conclusion. Yet they felt the need to explain that if Pitt did have contracts with Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania, such an arrangement would not be “inherently unlawful.”

“There is no law preventing Pitt from supporting Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania if it chooses to do so,” HPM investigators wrote.

There may be no law, but conflicts of interests between Pitt and PPFA do run amok. Not only do Pitt faculty moonlight as abortionists at a PPFA abortion clinic located just six minutes away from Magee-Womens Hospital, but in 2014, Center for Medical Progress’s David Daleiden recorded videos of Planned Parenthood associates admitting, “there is a tissue bank at Pitt that we offer patients to donate to.”

A vice chair of Pitt’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), Dr. Beatrice Chen, is also the medical director of Planned Parenthood Western Pennsylvania and oversees Planned Parenthood’s abortion training fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Chen, who also serves as Magee’s director of family planning, was listed in an annual report from Pitt as “outreach/contracted care,” along with three other doctors for Planned Parenthood Western Pennsylvania.

The IRB, a focus of HPM’s investigation, “is responsible for reviewing applications to conduct research involving human subjects conducted at the University,” yet they simply concluded that Chen had “no conflicts or violations.”

Direct air capture machines suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Are they part of the solution to climate change?

On a barren lava plateau in Iceland stands an entirely new kind of industrial facility that sucks carbon dioxide from the air and traps it in stone.

The world's first commercial direct air capture (DAC) plant is designed to remove thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas every year and then inject it deep underground.

Technology like this has been mooted for years but faced huge engineering challenges and, until recently, was dismissed as a costly fantasy.

Now the first plants are coming online, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognising that even if the world reduces its ongoing emissions as quickly as possible, there will still be too much CO2 in the atmosphere to avoid catastrophic levels of global warming.

In short, the IPCC says, the world needs to both reduce future emissions and remove historical ones to reach a safe climate.

Experts say DAC could become a trillion-dollar global industry — if it can be deployed at scale.

So how does DAC work, what's the future of the carbon removal industry, and is this an opportunity for renewables-rich Australia?

Why not just plant more trees?

When Deanna D'Alessandro, a professor of chemistry at the University of Sydney, encountered the idea of mechanical carbon removal, she wondered if there wasn't a simpler solution.

A tree, of course, is a pre-existing and relatively cheap technology that sequesters CO2 in wood and other biomass.

When scaled up, it's called a forest.

"My first thought was why not plant more trees," Professor D'Alessandro said.

"And then I did the numbers and stood in awe of them."

By her own calculations, using reforesting to capture Australia's CO2 emissions for two years, (about 1 billion tonnes), would require an area of land equivalent to the size of New South Wales.

DAC could do the same with 99.7 per cent less space, she said.

"Not only do we not have the land, we don't have the water to achieve natural sequestration."
