Apple Says It Will Start Telling Public When Government Wants To Shut Down Apps

Apple revealed Friday that it will start publishing reports on government requests to shut down apps on its software platform.

The new policy, announced in its bi-annual transparency report, is potentially in response to intensified criticism Apple receives for sometimes capitulating to foreign officials’ commands.

China, for example, has been trying to clamp down on certain technological capabilities that empower people with digital freedoms, like privacy tools. Apple agreed to the Chinese government’s demand last year to remove all virtual private networks (VPNs) from its app store tailored specifically for the country, sparking concerns that the tech giant cares more about access to the mass market than principles of an open internet.

Apple — like some other tech companies, but arguably to a higher degree — has acquiesced to a number of measures the Chinese government has wanted to impose, in an apparent attempt at appeasement, even indulgence.

Overall, respective governing bodies around the world sent requests for information on devices in general at least 29,718 times in the second half of last year. And the company gave data 79 percent of the time.

Requests to preserve data for a maximum of three months occurred in 1,214 cases, totaling 2,547 accounts, providing investigators with more time to traverse the legal process needed for legitimate data access.

For the U.S., Apple received more than 16,000 national security requests for around 8,249 accounts, a surge of 20 percent compared to the first half of 2017.

Furthermore, Apple provided data for 94 percent of appeals submitted by China, while it only did the same for the U.S. 80 percent of the time.

Google and Facebook are also fairly transparent about national security requests, which are official, somewhat common, and part of the private vs. public sector cooperation.

In Rare Move, Apple Shuts Down Atlantic City Store

Apple is reportedly set to close down a store in Atlantic City, triggering substantial layoffs for a company that doesn’t usually have to make such cuts in general.

The tech giant, which operates roughly 500 retail locations around the world, is supposedly shutting down the New Jersey spot because the area isn’t thriving as much as it used to be.

“Due to a sharp decline in tourism and visitors to the area, we have made the difficult decision not to extend our lease,” an Apple spokesman said, according to Bloomberg. “We are offering all of the store’s employees other jobs within Apple and we look forward to serving our Greater Atlantic City customers through our other southern New Jersey, Delaware Valley, and Greater Philadelphia area stores.”

Atlantic City has, for the most part, been taking a nosedive financially and commercially for quite some time, with investments perniciously dissipating for at least the last decade or so. The report that Apple felt forced to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with New Jersey for 52 affected employees reinforces that notion, since Apple rarely ever ends operations for a store without setting up a replacement.

Edward Snowden: 'There's no one in this world' Trump loves more than Putin

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden claims Russian President Vladimir Putin is President Trump's favorite person.

“There’s no one in this world that [Trump] loves more than the Russian president,” Snowden said during an interview with The Intercept for a podcast published Friday.

Snowden was granted asylum in Russia back in 2013 after he leaked secret information from the National Security Agency's surveillance programs and has been there ever since. Offering his insight into special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election as well as possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign, Snowden said people are “asking for too much” when hoping for a “smoking gun against Trump.”

“'Yes! Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, in the hotel room with the piss tape!'" You know that’s not how the world works; life is not that simple," he said, giving reference to the largely unverified dossier that alleged Trump took part in a kinky sex scene with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel in 2013.

“To be honest, everyone who has heard Trump speak for three minutes knows he’s a wrecking ball,” he said. “This does not sound like the kind of person that you would want to engage in some kind of complicated Manchurian Candidate, when, you know, the guy can’t even remember what he was going to say at the end of a sentence."

Instead, Snowden suggested that Putin would probably want to "cooperate" with Trump to “achieve an advantage.”

Trump’s legal team is currently in negotiations with Mueller’s team negotiate a potential sit-down interview with the president as part of the Russia investigation.

Casting doubt on the collusion narrative espoused by Trump's critics, Snowden opined that Trump doesn't is not the understated type of person Putin would want to coordinate with secretly.

Reporters call BS after Trump claims New York Times made up source for North Korea story

Reporters called out President Trump on Saturday for claiming the New York Times falsely reported that a White House official told them it would be impossible for the president to reinstate a canceled summit meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12.

“The Failing @nytimes quotes “a senior White House official,” who doesn’t exist, as saying “even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.” WRONG AGAIN! Use real people, not phony sources," Trump said in a Twitter post.

Reporters quickly defended the Times, saying the White House official spoke with a number of journalists in an arranged discussion on background, meaning they could not use his or her identity. One reporter, Yashar Ali of New York Magazine and Huffington Post, named the official, to prove Trump is not telling the truth. He reasoned that since he is not a White House reporter who agreed to the on-background terms, he felt okay naming the official.

“This is something a senior White House official, whose name is known to reporters, said on background on a conference call with lots of reporters. This person definitely exists,” said Katie Watson, a reporter with CBS News, in a Twitter post.

“I mean, every reporter on the call knows who this official was, and this official exists. And we all heard the official say it,” said Mike Warren, a writer at The Weekly Standard, in a tweet.

Another reporter, Benjy Sarlin of NBC News, threatened to stop following White House directions on how to refer to officials who brief the media. "Doesn’t seem like there’s any reason to honor WH demands for anonymous briefings if the WH is going to then claim their own briefings are fake news," Sarlin said on Twitter.

Seung Min Kim, a White House reporter for the Washington Post, shared the full quote from the official as well as the explanation given for not wanting to go on the record.

And when we asked why this official couldn't go on record, this official responded: "I think on the one hand, you have the president speaking today now not only through this letter [but also in bill sign ceremony]."

The official wanted to "let the president’s remarks stand."

Trump also tried to deny Saturday that there is internal disagreement among his staff on whether or how to proceed with a summit meeting with Kim, after Trump had canceled the meeting in a letter to him. Trump now says he is hopeful to meet with the North's leader.

“Unlike what the Failing and Corrupt New York Times would like people to believe, there is ZERO disagreement within the Trump Administration as to how to deal with North Korea…and if there was, it wouldn’t matter. The @nytimes has called me wrong right from the beginning!” Trump tweeted.

The Times said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis favor negotiating with North Korea over its nuclear weapons program, while national security adviser John Bolton says that Trump should only meet with Kim if he is prepared to give up all its nuclear weapons.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Saturday that "the White House pre-advance team for Singapore will leave as scheduled in order to prepare should the summit take place.”

He skips all over the place, not sure where he is in this yet. Russia granted him asylum. From what we know or think we know, he's not there now, I often wondered if he was an operative of both Brennan and Clapper, maybe he still is.

All this is really is a case of CYA on behalf of these reporters, they were trolled they figured it out too late before publishing and now they are on record. They are afraid of going down with the sinking ships they are currently on. I think this article illustrates their mind set perfectly. There is no name because it doesn't exist, they are banding together to protect their species. kek
