Salty Megan Cerullo reports

Trump’s desire to force patriotism with NFL kneeling ban echoes Nazi salute incident in 1933

President Trump's condemnation of National Football League players who kneel during the national anthem bears a striking resemblance to the Third Reich's punishment of a defiant soccer club.

"Stay Home, Nazis Tell Footballers" was the Jan. 6, 1934, Daily News headline on a story from Metz, France, after German soccer players declined to perform the infamous Hitler salute prior to a Christmas Day match.

The Karlsruhe Football Club's decision was not made in protest of its homeland. The French team, warning of possible blowback from fans, had threatened a boycott unless the Germans agreed to nix their government-mandated pregame salute.

As punishment, Nazi officials banned Karlsruhe and other teams in its league from playing in France through 1934.

Social media users compared the report to Trump's rhetoric around the NFL's ban ban on players' peaceful protests.

"See any parallels with the #NFL?" one Twitter user wrote.

Playwright Dylan Brody tweeted the article, saying: "I feel this is pertinent."

"Sub 'give Nazi Salute' for 'failed to stand' and you are pretty close to the way Trump wants it," Jim Mogle tweeted.

The National Football League on Wednesday voted to ban its players from kneeling — to protest racial injustice and police brutality — during the national anthem.

The new rule gives players the option to remain in the locker room while the anthem is sung. If they kneel on the field, however, they'll face fines.

"You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn't be there. Maybe you shouldn't be in the country," President Trump said in comments aired on "Fox & Friends" Thursday.

Under the influence of Hitler, the German Football Association required its players to give his salute before and after games.

The organization also encouraged teams to expel Jewish players.

Activists stormed the NFL's headquarters Friday to call on the league to reverse its kneeling policy, chanting, "Take a knee, stand your ground, if you don't get it, shut it down."

How Trump is Improving (and Ruining) Science Fiction

Trump is Making Science Fiction More Relevant (and Less Believable)

David Kyle Johnson Ph.D.

So, while science fiction (and many other stories) have become a lot more relevant in the age of Trump, they have also become less believable because they suggest that people like Trump can be defeated by reason and evidence. You may think I’m overly pessimistic, and that Trump will eventually get what he deserves for his constant lying, corruption, and nepotism. After all, the Muller Investigation, right? But Muller likely can't legally indict Trump simply because he is president–and even if he finds evidence of wrongdoing, nothing will come of it unless there is a major flip in both houses of Congress in 2018 (link is external). So, I’m not going to hold my breath. But please…prove me wrong, America! Prove me wrong!
