That would mean I think that he has had no choice in this decision. If he doesn't own it, he can't tell them not to play it.

This is my thinking, trying to dig up who all sold their music catalogs in the last year or so and compare it to who jumps on this bandwagon. If the artists don't own the music this doesn't hurt them at all other than reputation. The payoff already happened.
o7 will be watching for these artists to pull the same stunt.
Most bands only have 1 or 2 members that write all the songs. Having those members sell their rights takes all rights away from the rest of the band also. Copyrights are strange in music.
