Repent = turn 180, change your mind, give up on trying to be good, trying to be like God.
Recognize that there are laws from God that exist, whose punishment is death, and that you have broken.
Realize that death in God's eyes is separation from God; and that the penalty for breaking the law is eternal separation from God. In the dark, and on fire.
Learn that there is a way out of this eternal damnation; that if you confess with your mouth, that is to say out loud, that Jesus is LORD, and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Everyone who calls on the name of the Son will be saved.
Jesus is exactly who He said He is; the only begotten Son of God.
And there's only one way to avoid eternal hellfire: Repent, beg for forgiveness, plead for mercy, to the risen Christ Jesus. Who, it turns out, is within arm's reach of everyone.
You must mean the 4000 years before Jesus came to earth as a baby, since Jesus made the world, after all.
Oh, and people don't go to hell because they don't know about Jesus; people go to hell because they are spiritually dead, and there's nowhere else for spiritually dead people to go for eternity.
And yes, most of the people before Jesus ended up in hell, and most of the people after Jesus ended up in hell.
Turns out that the race of man is more interested in what the devil has to offer than what God has to offer.
God is only waiting for the last person to be saved in this age, to be saved.
Then the plan goes into the Tribulation phase.

And if they did, they can't deliver.
