The recipient was a person known only as "Artemisia Stricta", a moniker they adopted when they started their secret career as an online sleuth exposing academic fraud.
The message was from a NSW police constable investigating death threats intended for the elusive scientific whistleblower.
The threats against Artemisia Stricta and their family had been sent to the wrong person.
While these threats were misdirected, the whistleblower, whose alias is the scientific name of a plant endemic to Central Asia, knows their work has made them some fierce enemies.
"I am concerned for my safety. My family has begged me to stop doing this work," Artemisia Stricta told the ABC via encrypted email.
That work has included spending hundreds of hours reviewing scientific papers in the field of construction engineering, an academic discipline not typically known for drama or intrigue.
What the whistleblower has uncovered is shocking: Hundreds of published scientific papers dating back a decade based on dodgy science involving multiple researchers working at Australian universities.
The most infamous is former Swinburne University engineer Ali Nazari, who left the university under a cloud in 2019 after one publisher took the unusual step of simultaneously retracting 22 of his papers.
Two years earlier, he had received the vice-chancellor's award for research excellence and was also awarded grants worth more than $1 million.

Trump wrote that Pence "could have overturned the Election!"
"If the Vice President (Mike Pence) had 'absolutely no right' to change the Presidential Election results in the Senate, despite fraud and many other irregularities, how come the Democrats and RINO Republicans, like Wacky Susan Collins, are desperately trying to pass legislation that will not allow the Vice President to change the results of the election?" Trump wrote.
Collins spoke with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday about her efforts to lead a bipartisan group of 16 senators to reform the Electoral College Act.
"We saw, on January sixth of 2021, how ambiguities… were exploited. We need to prevent that from happening again," she told Stephanopoulos. "I'm hopeful that we can come up with a bipartisan bill that will make very clear that the vice president's role is simply ministerial, that he has no ability to halt the count."
The House Jan. 6 panel is also reportedly discussing how to limit the vice president's role in certifying election results. Some in the Republican party were angry at Pence for not overturning the 2020 election results. Trump attorney John Eastman has been accused of telling Pence that the vice president could block election certification.
By reforming the Electoral College Act, Trump argued, "Actually, what they are saying, is that Mike Pence did have the right to change the outcome, and they now want to take that right away. Unfortunately, he didn’t exercise that power, he could have overturned the Election!"
The former Vice President has defended his decision to not alter the election results.
Speaking about the 2020 election in December, Pence said, "I believe there were irregularities about which I was concerned, and I wanted them to have a fair hearing before the Congress."
He told CBN's David Brody that he did his "duty under the Constitution" on Jan. 6 by certifying the election.
"I don't know if President Trump and I will ever see eye to eye on that day – or that many of our most ardent supporters will agree with my decision that day – but I know I did the right thing," he said, later adding, "The last thing you would ever want is for our elections to be managed in Washington, D.C."
Pence defended his decision on Jan. 6 as recently as last week.

"You know, we talked last summer," Pence replied. "It was difficult, January 6 was difficult. It was a tragic day in the life of the nation. A criminal IRS investigation into Hunter Biden — President Biden’s son — appears to have convened a grand jury as far back as May 2019, a confidential subpoena served to JPMorgan Chase bank reveals. The subpoena also seeks bank records of James Biden, the president’s brother, which appears to be the first time another Biden family member has surfaced in connection with the investigation.
The document, obtained by Breitbart News, specifically demands information on related transactions between JPMorgan Chase Bank, which the document calls “correspondent bank,” and the Bank of China, which the document calls the “originating or beneficiary bank.”
The document appears to show that as President Biden was launching his campaign that spring, federal prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Delaware had impaneled a grand jury and were demanding the production of bank records relating to Hunter and James Biden, as well as two of their business associates Devon Archer and Eric Schwerin.
While it has been reported that subpoenas were issued in a Hunter Biden criminal probe from federal investigators, the level of detail this document contains has never been reported.
The document, dated May 20, 2019, is a subpoena compelling JPMorgan Chase bank to appear in U.S. District Court in Delaware. “YOU ARE COMMANDED to appear in this United States district court at the time, date, and place to testify before the court’s grand jury,” the document — a subpoena to JPMorgan Chase Bank’s subpoena processing office based in Indianapolis — says. “When you arrive, you must remain at the court until a judge or a court officer allows you to leave.”
The document lists a courtroom in the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building in Wilmington, Delaware, as the location that JPMorgan Chase Bank officials were compelled to appear and commands a response by June 25, 2019.
“You must also bring with you the following documents, electronically stored information, or objects” the document continues, then pointing to “Attachment A” which lists out exactly what the mega-bank needed to provide to the court.

Schweizer: Biden Family Business Dealings with China a ‘National Security Issue’
Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweizer said Sunday on FNC’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that President Joe Biden’s family members, who made business deals with China, have created a “national security issue.”

4th Mossad commander resigns in under a year - media
Four senior Israeli spy agency officials have resigned allegedly over disagreements with newly appointed Mossad director
Unnamed commander of Mossad’s special operations division has resigned, accoridng to Israeli media. He reportedly became the fourth high-profile official to leave Mossad in seven months since David Barnea became director of the Israeli intelligence agency in June 2021.
According to a Channel 13 News report on Sunday, the commander resigned after Barnea allegedly told him that he and other officials had become a “burden on the organization.”
“Barnea wanted to make major changes to how the department headed by [the unnamed commander] works because of difficulties in operating Israeli agents abroad, and [the commander] did not implement them as requested,” Haaretz detailed, adding that the commander’s deputy and “a number of agents also resigned” over the incident.
The commander has reportedly since been replaced.
It is the fourth time that a senior Mossad official has resigned in seven months since Barnea replaced Yossi Cohen as director of the agency.
Last year, Mossad’s head of technology, head of operations, and head of anti-terror all resigned from their positions over alleged conflict with Barnea.

Syrian air defenses intercept Israeli missile barrage - report
The alleged airstrikes come hours after a ballistic missile launched by Iran-backed Houthis targeted Abu Dhabi.
Syrian air defenses intercepted an alleged Israeli missile barrage targeting the vicinity of the capital Damascus, state media said early on Monday citing a military source.
The source was quoted as saying that the interception resulted in some material damage.
The missiles were launched from the direction of Riyaq, a Lebanese town east of Beirut, according to the Syrian SANA news agency.
Israeli officials were not immediately available for comment.
Last month, an alleged Israeli airstrike targeted Latakia's commercial port in northwestern Syria, in what was the third alleged airstrike in December.
Israel's alleged airstrikes came hours after a Houthi ballistic missile targeting Abu Dhabi was intercepted by the United Arab Emirates' air defenses.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog is currently in the UAE conducting an official visit. The president was updated about the incident and he and his entourage are safe, as the visit is expected to continue as planned.
