Ted Cruz still wants to be president, makes 2024 announcement
“ The race in ’24 will very much hinge on whatever President Trump decides to say and do,” Cruz told NBC News. “President Trump is going to make his decision whether or not he runs, or nobody else is going to make that decision for him. And I expect that everyone else will react accordingly when he does make that decision.”
While he has discussed his interest in another presidential run, he told The Truth Gazette, a conservative website for teenagers, in December that his second-place finish in the 2016 primaries gives him confidence that he will win. “There’s a reason historically that the runner-up is almost always the next nominee,” he said, recalling a number of second-place finishers who went on to win nominations.
Cruz is likely to start from behind if he decides to run again. According to early polls of the 2024 field, Cruz trails Trump and other GOP candidates like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. According to a Morning Consult/Politico survey done last week, Cruz garnered 2 percent of Republicans’ support in a GOP primary, while Trump received 50%.
