Because english wasn't around in the founding of the order, my gut feeling it couldn't have been G for God, because God has many names in many languages.
A Name, however, never changes its first letter or way of pronunciation. G would sound like a G in any language spoken.
G for Gadreel is an answer that does make sense. Now it's the story that I find a little off, as Lucifer isn't necessarily the bad guy…We've just been taught by man that he is evil.
