Some say it is is a stand-in for the 7th letter of the Roman alphabet, with mystical divine significance in the number 7.

In kabbaistic gematria, no number has the power and significance of the number seven.

It is the perfect number. 7 is the most sacred number. Seven is completeness and wholesomeness.

The Roman letter may be derived from the Hebrew Gimel. In kabbalah, Gimel is seen as representing the dualities of the world, unifying them into a "complete" three-pronged process (cf. trinity). Gimel is the third letter in the Hebrew alphabet (Godfather III?).

Whatever, surely multiple layers of multiple meanings which multiplicity is the power of the symbol.
