College prof appears to say on video there's nothing wrong with adult-child sex; school is now investigating prof's 'reprehensible' words

A college professor appears to say in a video interview that he sees nothing immoral about sex between adults and children. With that the college's president called the professor's words "reprehensible," and now the school is investigating.

What are the details?

WIVB-TV reported that video clips in question appear to show philosophy professor Stephen Kershnar discussing sex between adults and children. In the clips Kershnar seems to make it clear he finds nothing immoral about adult-child sex.

Here's one clip. There is no obvious origin or context for the clip at present, and there appears to be a single cut in the video of him speaking:

He says, "Imagine that an adult male wants to have sex with a 12-year-old girl. Imagine that she's a willing participant. [cut] A very standard, very widely held view that there's something deeply wrong with this, and it's wrong independent of it being criminalized. It's not obvious to me that it is, in fact, wrong; I think this is a mistake. And I think exploring why it's a mistake will tell us not only things about adult-child sex and statutory rape but also about fundamental principles of morality."

What did the college have to say?

Stephen H. Kolison, president of State University of New York at Fredonia, posted the following statement Tuesday night: “SUNY Fredonia is aware of a video posted online involving one of its professors. The views expressed by the professor are reprehensible and do not represent the values of SUNY Fredonia in any way, shape, or form. They are solely the professor’s views. The matter is being reviewed.”

What else do we know about the professor?

Kershnar also has written about adult-child sex. The abstract for his article titled " The Moral Status of Adult-Child Sex" in the April 2001 issue of Public Affairs Quarterly reads as follows: "Nonforcible adult-child sex is thought to be morally wrong in part because it is nonconsensual. In this paper I argue against this notion. In particular, I reject accounts of the moral wrongfulness of adult-child sex that rest on the absence of consent, concerns about adult exploitation of children, and the existence of a morally primitive duty against such sex."

SUNY Fredonia's bio on Kershnar indicates he's written about "such diverse topics as abortion, adult-child sex, hell, most valuable player, pornography, punishment, sexual fantasies, slavery, and torture. He is the author of ten books, including Desert Collapses: Why No One Deserves Anything (2021), Total Collapse: The Case Against Morality and Responsibility (2018), and Abortion, Hell, and Shooting Abortion-Doctors: Does the Pro-Life Worldview Make Sense? (2017)."

Kershnar also authored 2015's “Pedophilia and Adult-Child Sex: A Philosophical Analysis,” according to WIVB.

And in a two-hour-plus video interview dated Dec. 5, 2020, Kershnar delved into a variety of topics, including adult-child sex. Kershnar — who can be seen on the left side of the screen — says he got interested in the topic because he was exploring "whether or not an act is wrong because it's harmful."

He goes on to note three basic arguments against adult-child sex — harm, infringement of rights, exploitation — and said that "none of these [arguments] convinced me."

Defense Sec. Austin tells GOP governors their National Guardsmen must receive COVID-19 vaccine

The Pentagon chief sent letters to seven red state governors saying the military vaccine mandate must be enforced within the National Guard.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has notified seven Republican governors that their state's National Guard troops must be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

In a message sent to the state leaders, Austin said that his position gives him the authority to implement the vaccine mandate "regardless of duty status." The governors had previously asked Austin to drop the mandate, arguing that he had no power to enforce it among Guardsmen who are under state authority.

Continued refusal to comply with the mandate, Austin said, will "lead to a prohibition on participation in drills, training and other duty conducted under title 32 and will jeopardize the member's status in the National Guard."

The Pentagon chief this past summer mandated vaccines for the entire military but has allowed each branch to come up with its own deadlines. Members of the Air National Guard were given until December 2021 to receive the shots, while Army National Guardsmen have been given until the end of June.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt was the first state leader to request that Austin drop the mandate in November. Austin declined the request, and Stitt would later appoint an adjutant general of the Guard who has told the service members that they are not required to get the shot.

Austin and the GOP governors are split over two federal laws that give alternating control of the National Guard to the governors and the president. Under Title 32 of the U.S. Code, governors control the guard unless they are mobilized for federal duty. But, under Title 10, the president can mobilize the Guard, which places them under federal control.

Stitt's efforts were joined by other such GOP governors as Mark Gordon of Wyoming, Tate Reeves of Mississippi, Kim Reynolds of Iowa, Brad Little of Idaho, Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, and Mike Dunleavy of Alaska. Greg Abbott of Texas also received a letter from Austin after the former sued the Pentagon attempting to block the mandate. Dunleavy has since signed onto Abbott's suit.

Grassley joins Sens. Graham, Blumenthal to reintroduce EARN IT Act fighting online child sex abuse

The EARN IT Act passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with unanimous bipartisan support last Congress.

GOP Sens. Chuck Grassley, of Ohio, and Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina, have joined Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal to reintroduce a bipartisan bill to encourage the tech industry to take further action to prevent the exploitation of children online.

The Elimination Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act (EARN IT), would remove blanket immunity for violations of laws related to online materials pertaining to child sexual abuse.

"Online service providers have long acknowledged their responsibility to enforce user policies and moderate certain content, but many have not done enough to combat child predators who use these platforms to exploit and victimize children,"

Grassley said. "This bill would ensure that online service providers that fail to crack down on such content are not able to escape consequence by hiding behind Section 230 immunity."

Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, also said the bill received unanimous bipartisan support from the panel in July 2020.

"It's time we get it on the books to help prevent future child exploitation online," he said.

The legislation would create a national commission to prevent child sexual exploitation online that would be comprised of the directors of the Federal Trade Commission, the departments of Justice and Homeland Security and 16 additional members appointed by congressional leadership. It also, if passed and signed into law, would provide tools for survivors of online child sexual abuse and help them fight for civil recourse.

The bill also has broad support among survivor groups and stakeholders, in addition to backing from a bipartisan group of more than a dozen senators.

White House Defends Mailing Americans Coronavirus Tests Made in China

The White House on Wednesday defended spending over $1 billion in taxpayer funds to purchase coronavirus tests made in China and sending them to the American people.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during the daily briefing that demand for tests was too great to prevent setting up government contracts with China to acquire tests.

“We also needed to meet a need that we had in this country for more tests and a shortage in tests, and the understandable demand from people across this country to get tests and make them free and accessible which required us purchasing some of those tests from China in order to meet that demand,” Psaki said.

China’s Andon Health Co., Ltd. signed a $1.28 billion contract with the United States Army Contracting Command to acquire over 250 million coronavirus self-test kits to send to Americans.

China’s state-run Global Times celebrated China’s contribution to the United States as a propaganda victory, as shares of Andon Health stocks spiked after Biden’s announcement.

Psaki said the Biden administration would continue to support American-made tests but that the volume was not enough.

Biden’s decision to purchase over a billion coronavirus tests to send to Americans drew criticism from some governors, who noted the federal government was making it more difficult for states to acquire their own testing.

The Biden administration’s decision to purchase tests from China also angered Republicans, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL).

“Senator Scott thinks it is unacceptable that the Biden administration would spend American taxpayer dollars on COVID tests from Communist China, which just goes directly to supporting General Secretary Xi and his genocidal regime, instead of supporting American manufacturers and jobs,” a statement from Scott’s office to Fox News read.

Controversial NYC Judge Denis Boyle no longer handling youth cases

A notoriously lenient Bronx judge who’s made headlines for allowing violent teens to be cut loose on bail will no longer handle youth cases, The Post has learned.

Acting Supreme Court Justice Denis Boyle is transferring from the youth part to handle adult trials and hearings instead at his own request, according to the state Office of Court Administration.

“The judge felt that at the beginning of this year he was in the last stage of his career after 30 years on the bench and wanted to get back to his first love, which is hearings and trials,” OCA spokesman Lucian Chalfen said in an email.

But Boyle’s tenure presiding over criminal cases involving younger defendants has recently garnered outrage from New York’s Finest.

The veteran jurist, 67, drew heat last week when a teen rapper accused of shooting an NYPD cop was freed after posting the $250,000 bond set by the judge — even though Bronx prosecutors wanted him locked up without bail.

Camrin Williams, 16, is charged with assault and gun possession for wounding the cop during a scuffle on Jan. 18.

“Shame on Judge Denis Boyle for allowing this to happen,” PBA president Patrick Lynch said in a statement after Williams was freed.

“The people of the Bronx won’t be safe as long as he’s been on the bench.”

Boyle also lowered the bail on 17-year-old Darryl Burnett, who was charged with attempted murder in an attack on an elderly Marine Corps vet — only to have the teen make bail and get busted again in November with a .38-caliber handgun.

Burnett had been held on $100,000 cash or a $200,000 bond until the judge lowered the amount to $50,000 cash or bond, which the teen was able to post.

In May, Boyle ordered probation for Steven Mendez, an 18-year-old reputed gang banger, after he pleaded guilty to a violent 2020 armed robbery, even though the teen could have done four years in state prison for the crime.

Once back on the streets, Mendez allegedly shot and killed college student Saiko Koma, 21, in October in what sources said was a case of mistaken identity.

In June, Alberto Ramirez, another reputed teenage gangster — who was released after Boyle lowered his bail — allegedly gunned down 34-year-old dad Eric Velasquez.

Ramirez, 16, was being held on $75,000 bail on a gun charge but was allowed back on the streets after Boyle reduced it to $10,000.

And last year, yet another 16-year-old suspect, Jordon Benjamin, was released despite facing a manslaughter charge, only to be arrested for slashing a young woman.

Facebook Plummets 20% After Missing Across The Board; US Users Drop, Guidance Disappoints

Heading into today's earnings from social media giant Facebook Meta (technically, the first quarter since the company changed its name), JPM previews expectations as follows: buyside is at the top end of Q4 guide (21%reported growth), with expectation that management steer to a Q1 deceleration q/q (consensus +16%) and reiterate $91-97b FY expense guide. With the new reporting structure, the bank expects RL to represent a LSD% of total revenue and would like to see additional disclosure around VR unit shipments, engagement, developers, etc. The bank also expects FB to have passed 10m active VR units.

If that sounds a bit too arcane, Loup Funds' Gene Munster simplifies it, tweeting that "the most important metric is MAU/DAU growth. Street is looking for up 5%. If the base is growing, the company can power through IDFA and macro headwinds. If engagement declines, FB will need the metaverse to bail them out."

As for why FB (not to be confused with META) matters, JPM writes that its earnings along with AMZN, Friday's Payrolls and the upcoming CPI print, will determine whether the market can sustainable rise from here.

Unfortunately if it really depends on Facebook then we have a problem because moments ago Facebook reported revenues, EPS and DAU which both missed, but the kicker was the company's revenue guidance which was well below expectations, and as a result the stock is crashing a whopping 16% after hours.

Here is what Facebook reported for Q4:

Revenue $33.67B, missing est. $33.43B

Advertising revenue $32.64 billion

EPS $3.67, missing estimate $3.84

Operating margin 37%, missing estimate 38.7%
