Judicial Watch Sues CIA Over Communications That Reportedly Targeted President Trump

(CNS News) – The government watchdog group Judicial Watch has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for communications between then-CIA Director Gina Haspel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley in 2020-21, which reportedly involved the targeting of President Donald Trump.

As reported in Newsweek, in the days after the 2020 presidential election, Haspel apparently told Milley, "We are on the way to a right-wing coup."

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in a statement said, “It ought to be disturbing to all Americans that the head of the CIA and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs were reportedly conspiring against the President of the United States."

“Our new lawsuit will hopefully ferret out the truth about any plots to undermine President Trump by the military and CIA," added Fitton.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, notes that Judicial Watch filed a standard FOIA request with the CIA in September 2021, but this request was ignored.

As a result, Judicial Watch has sued and is requesting the following information,

  • All records of communication between CIA Director Gina Haspel and Gen. Mark Milley between November 1, 2020, and January 20, 2021.

  • All records regarding all meetings between CIA Director Haspel and Gen. Milley between November 1, 2020, and January 20, 2021. This includes all summaries, notes, and transcripts, as well as all records created in preparation for, during, or pursuant to any such meeting.

Statement from DNI Haines and DCIA Burns

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Director of National Intelligence Avril D. Haines and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency William J. Burns today issued the following statement:

We continue to pursue complementary efforts to get to the bottom of Anomalous Health Incidents (AHIs)—and to deliver access to world-class care for those affected. We are making progress in both areas. We recently shared Intelligence Community (IC) coordinated analysis that primarily focused on the question of attribution. Today we are pleased to share the declassified executive summary of the IC Experts Panel report. We convened the panel last year to examine—from a scientific, technical, and medical perspective—potential causal mechanisms for AHIs. The panel found that a subset of AHIs cannot be easily explained by known environmental or medical conditions and could be explained by certain external factors. Moving forward, the work of the IC Experts Panel will help sharpen the work of the IC and broader U.S. Government as we focus on possible causes. We will stay at it, with continued rigor, for however long it takes.

The U.S. Government remains committed to providing access to care for those who need it, and we will continue to share as much information as possible with our workforce and the American public as our efforts continue. Nothing is more important than the well-being and safety of our colleagues.
