Majority of Canadians disagree with ‘freedom convoy’ on vaccine mandates and lockdowns
The arrival of the self-styled “freedom convoy” in Ottawa this week has dominated headlines, but do the demonstrators represent the views of most Canadians? When it comes to their stark opposition to government-imposed restrictions and vaccine mandates, research shows the protesters clearly represent a minority view — no matter how vocal they are.
Most Canadians support government measures to help control the spread of COVID-19, according to our ongoing public opinion study. Known as the COVID-19 Monitor, the study of Canadians’ attitudes relating to the COVID-19 pandemic and public policy interventions has been running since shortly after the first COVID-19-related government restrictions were introduced in March 2020. It has amassed more than 100,000 respondents, making it one of the largest continuing studies of Canadian attitudes toward the pandemic.
The study is a partnership between McMaster University’s Digital Society Lab and Vox Pop Labs, a social enterprise that conducts public opinion research polling. We hold positions with both organizations.
Our findings indicate that a majority of Canadians support most of the measures that have been employed by federal and provincial governments aimed at preventing the transmission of COVID-19. In most cases support has remained relatively stable since the beginning of the pandemic.

Ottawa Truckers Convoy Recap
Many of us in Police on Guard have just returned from Ottawa and many of us are still on the ground there.
We wanted to provide an update, so you could hear the details from us, on exactly what is taking place in Ottawa.
Unfortunately, we are aware of what some of our country’s leaders and mainstream media are saying transpired. So, we want to be clear on what we witnessed while we were there and what is still taking place.
We witnessed nothing but love, kindness, peacefulness and patriotism from our fellow Canadians.
While there are always a few bad actors in every group, those that carried offensive messages or images, were asked to leave the area, as their message was not welcome. This was done without any violence or escalation of the situation.
Many protestors cleaned the streets of garbage, placing it in a central area to make it easier for the city to pick up. Proud Canadians from every walk of life that were in attendance also cleaned statues and monuments that were in any way treated poorly, while many others laid flowers at the tomb of the unknown soldier. We thanked the Police Officers for their service and were told on numerous occasions that this was one of the most peaceful demonstrations they have seen.
Ottawa Police Chief Sloly has called the protest a success and there were no riots or injuries at the rally, with some minor arrests under the Criminal Code.
This Peaceful Assembly is a guaranteed right under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We ask that everyone who is still in Ottawa, and those of you planning on attending, remember that violence is not the answer. The true Canadian spirit is on full display in our nation’s capital, and for that we should all be proud. If you see any issues that are concerning, contact the proper authorities immediately.
We support the Truckers and their peaceful right to assemble to end the mandates. Let’s all remember that we are united, in love, and that hate is not the answer.

RCMP sending more officers to help police Ottawa protest
The RCMP is sending more officers to help police the ongoing "Freedom Convoy" demonstration in downtown Ottawa, as the protest over COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other public health restrictions enters a second week.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino approved the city of Ottawa's request for additional RCMP resources following a phone call with Mayor Jim Watson.
"I am able to confirm that the RCMP has approved all the additional officers that were requested, and they will be ready to assist the Ottawa Police Service, who are the police of jurisdiction," Mendicino said in a statement Thursday evening.
"This request is in addition to RCMP resources and support already in place since the arrival of the convoy to Ottawa. It is important to underline that these are operational decisions taken by the police, independent of the government."
The RCMP has been part of the incident command structure policing the demonstration on Parliament Hill and downtown streets, under the jurisdiction of Ottawa police.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a fresh call for the protesters occupying downtown Ottawa to move on, while suggesting his government is unlikely to deploy the military to help end the demonstration.
"The people of Ottawa deserve to have their lives back, deserve to have their neighbourhoods back," he told reporters. "The citizens of Ottawa … are increasingly being very vocal about the fact that this needs to stop.
"We’ve seen seniors step forward, we’ve seen young families being very, very vocal about the fact that this is absolutely unacceptable."
Trudeau added his government will look at any formal requests for military help in ending the protests, but has not received any.
“One has to be very, very cautious before deploying military in situations engaging Canadians,” he said. “As of now there have been no requests, and that is not in the cards right now.”
Ottawa's police chief had raised the possibliity of help from the military as part of ending the occupation, which is calling for an end to all COVID-19 mandates.
Canada's defence minister later tweeted that the Canadian Forces are not a police force.
"As such, there are no plans for the Canadian Armed Forces to be involved in the current situation in Ottawa in a law enforcement capacity," Anita Anand wrote.

The ongoing investigation, which exposed an affair that led to Zucker’s abrupt resignation yesterday, has expanded to include possible improprieties during Cuomo’s tenure as governor of New York, sources tell Rolling Stone
In relationships, timing is everything. And the timeline on Jeff Zucker and Allison Gollust’s coupledom is not only off by more than two decades, say sources who have worked with the pair — the CNN power couple also repeatedly lied about their relationship to their corporate bosses.
According to CNN president Zucker’s Feb. 2 resignation memo to staff, the romantic relationship — which marked a flagrant violation of corporate policy given that Gollust, the network’s top communications executive, was a direct report to Zucker for most of her nine-year tenure there — began sometime in the past two years. Gollust said in that same memo: “Jeff and I have been close friends and professional partners for over 20 years. Recently, our relationship changed during Covid. I regret that we didn’t disclose it at the right time.” Added Zucker: “The relationship evolved in recent years.”
Zucker noted in his memo that WarnerMedia’s ongoing investigation into Chris Cuomo — who was fired in December for a breach of ethics after it was discovered he’d been advising his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, while the latter faced accusations of sexual harassment — brought the affair to light and prompted his resignation. And it seems the probe, which is being overseen by the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, is unearthing plenty of embarrassing details about the goings-on at CNN. The scope of the investigation has now expanded to include Zucker and Gollust’s relationship with Andrew Cuomo, too, a WarnerMedia source acknowledged.
