A Jeep Patriot had driven through a group of protesters supporting the Freedom Convoy at the legislative grounds, striking four adult males.

The driver fled the scene, running several red lights. With assistance from the RCMP, officers stopped the vehicle less than an hour later, arresting the lone driver after a short struggle.

The driver is a 42-year-old male from the town of Headingley whose name has not yet been released.

Thankfully, there were no deaths or major injuries as a result of the ramming.

Three of the victims sustained minor injuries that did not need medical attention, though one was reportedly treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. The fourth was treated in hospital and has since been released.

The 42-year-old driver was detained in custody and faces the following charges:

Muammar Gaddafi's tent finds home on Donald Trump's estate

Muammar Gaddafi pitched his tent on an estate belonging to Donald Trump in suburban New York yesterday, according to reports.

The Libyan leader is scheduled to attend the UN general assembly this week. He had been struggling to find a plot to accommodate the large Bedouin tent he takes with him when travelling abroad.

Workers were seen yesterday erecting a tent and satellites in the glamorous neighbourhood of Bedford on an estate owned by Trump. Local officials tried to stop them, saying it was illegal to build a temporary residence without a permit. An ABC News helicopter filmed a large tent on the 113-acre Seven Springs estate, with rugs and patterned wall hangings. Green and yellow fabric lined the walls in a pattern dotted with images of small brown camels, according to a local newspaper website image. Last night a state department official told AP the tent might be used for entertaining by Gadaffi, but he would not be sleeping there.

Doors all over New York have been slammed in the colonel's face, but Trump says he has rented part of a large property in Westchester county to Middle Eastern tenants who may be associated with Gadaffi.

Gadaffi last month wanted to erect a tent in New Jersey, where the Libyan embassy owns property, but the US government said he could not. A request to set up tent in Central Park was also turned down.

Gadaffi arrived in New York yesterday, It is likely he will face protests over Scotland's recent release of Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, convicted of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 which killed 270.

Truck convoy: City 'outnumbered,' says mayor; Protesters given Monday deadline to leave or risk inclusion in $9.8 million class action lawsuit

The ‘Freedom Convoy’ that converged in Ottawa more than a week ago started in response to the federal government’s move to require that all Canadian truck drivers crossing the U.S. border be fully vaccinated. The Canadian Trucking Alliance, the main advocacy body for truckers, has disavowed the protest, saying the vast majority of its members are fully vaccinated and are continuing to work. The core organizers of the protest insist that they are not anti-vaccine but instead oppose mandates that require vaccination for people to work.

One in three Canadians support the convoy—labour must split them on class lines!

According to a poll by Abacus Data and reported by the National Post this week, 32 per cent of Canadians sympathize with the convoy. This is a concrete fact proving that those who support the convoy are not a homogenous group of fascists.

One of our members, a rank-and-file member of PSAC, spoke at the Feb. 3 meeting asking attendees to think about the reasons behind the convoy in the first place and the massive anger in society. He outlined the mishandling of the pandemic by governments who defend the big corporate owners and the whole capitalist system. He quoted Malcolm X: “We’re not outnumbered. We’re out-organized.”

He said that those present were there because they wanted to do something about the convoy. But to do something means to understand who the real enemy is; to draw battle lines and figure out who we should be fighting.

He said that the labour movement should be on the side of the working class and completely opposed to the capitalist class, the big business wealthy elite with their puppets in government. He highlighted how the people at the head of the convoy are a coalition of capitalists and white supremacists who have duped a big number of workers who are justifiably angry at the way things are. He said we need to split the convoy along class lines so that the leadership of the convoy is exposed and so we can win over workers with our demands, not the demands of the right wing.

The leaders of the convoy are racists, some associated with white supremacist groups, and literally the corporate owners of the truck companies—the real enemies of truckers. It is generally a right-populist leadership taking advantage of a vacuum of leadership from the left.

This is but a small expression of a mass phenomenon of anger against the establishment—an anger that our labour movement urgently needs to organize to stop the right-wing corporate frauds at the head of the convoy. If labour and the NDP continues to remain inactive, more workers will fall further into the hands of the right-wing populists.

https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/downtown-ottawa-out-of-control-with-convoy-protesters-calling-the-shots-mayor-1.5769811

Downtown Ottawa 'out of control' with convoy protesters 'calling the shots': mayor

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson says downtown Ottawa is "out of control" as the trucker convoy protest and occupation is now in its 10th day.

Hundreds of trucks remain parked on Parliament Hill and through the Parliamentary Precinct this morning. Police and city officials are urging people to avoid the downtown core, and warn roads and interprovincial bridges could be closed again today to slow the flow of vehicles into the downtown core.

Speaking on Newstalk 580 CFRA's CFRA Live with Andrew Pinsent Sunday morning, Watson said it's apparent the protesters have taken over the core.

"The situation at this point is completely out of control because the individuals with the protest are calling the shots," Watson said. "They have far more people than we have police officers and I've indicated to the chief that we have to be much more nimble and proactive when it comes to these activities."

Watson mentioned the wooden structure protesters built at Confederation Park, which has become a "community kitchen." He said more should have been done to stop that sooner.

"Now, it's become a rallying point, where there's so many people there. How do we go in and enforce the laws and the NCC's property rights?"

On Saturday, Ottawa's police chief admitted the force doesn't have enough resources to address the situation.

“We do not have sufficient resources to adequately and effectively address this situation while adequately and effectively providing policing in this city," said Chief Peter Sloly during a special Ottawa Police Services Board meeting.

On Saturday, an estimated 5,000 people and 1,000 tractor trailers and personal vehicles filled downtown Ottawa to join the protest. Hundreds of people attended a counter-protest at Ottawa City Hall, calling for an end to the demonstration.

"This is a siege. It is a something that is different in our democracy than something I've ever experienced in my life," said Sloly.

"It's not a demonstration, it's not an occupation, it's something and we don't have a Police Act that can adequately or effectively address this circumstance."

The chief told the board that all active Ottawa police officers are on duty, and most officers are working 12-hour and 14-hour shifts.

The Ottawa Police Services Board approved the deployment of 257 RCMP officers to further assist with the enforcement of the demonstration. Officers from the OPP and municipal police forces in London, Toronto, York, Cornwall and Sudbury have been deployed to Ottawa to assist with policing.

Acting Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson outlined the staffing deployed to police the city and the protest zone.

"It takes us about 495 officers for a 24-hour cycle to staff this right now," said Ferguson.

Normally, Ottawa police have 478 frontline officers.

"For the city itself, for a 24-hour period we have on average 150 officers – just to cover what we need across from Cumberland to Arnprior," said Ferguson.

For the "footprint" Ottawa police need to hold during the demonstration, Ferguson says they need 225 officers for traffic patrol downtown.

"Finally, for the surge that we announced on Friday morning, it's 120 officers over a 24-hour period."

Organizers of the demonstration say they plan to hold a press conference this afternoon. In a statement, organizers said they would not be honking their truck horns Sunday morning.

"Out of respect for the Lord's Day, for members of our military who have sacrificed and who continue to sacrifice so much for our freedom, for the men and women in blue who are doing such a superb job protecting us, and as a gesture of goodwill, members of our Convoy will desist from the blowing of Horns tomorrow, Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ottawa time," a news release said.

However, horns could still be heard downtown.

Mayor, councillor call on the federal government to step in

As the protest continues for a second weekend, Mayor Jim Watson is looking to the federal government for more help to end the protest.

"The federal government has an important role," said Watson during an interview on CTV News at Six. "They're going to have to sit down and have some kind of a discussion, some kind of mediation to get this situation resolved because it's now spreading across the country."

Watson says he spoke with Premier Doug Ford on Friday and Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino on Thursday to secure additional OPP and RCMP officers to assist Ottawa police.

The mayor also commented on the bouncy castles and saunas being set up in downtown Ottawa and at the Ottawa Baseball Stadium.

"It's disturbing when you see the protest turning into what looks like some kind of fun carnival, where they've got bouncy castles and hot tubs and saunas," said Watson. "A complete insult to the people who are putting up with this nonsense for the last seven days and it shows a great deal of insensitivity."

Councillor Catherine McKenney, who represents part of the area affected by the demonstration, called on the prime minister to intervene.

"Dear Justin Trudeau please do something. You have a responsibility to protect your Capital. We are under siege. Day 9," they tweeted, while quoting a video of fireworks going off amid densely packed buildings in the downtown core.

In addition to the horns, demonstrators have been lighting off fireworks at night, prompting concern from some residents about the proximity to residential high-rises, as well as the fuel cannisters strewn about the area.

Last week, McKenney wrote a letter to the prime minister, calling on the federal government and the RCMP to assume full operational control of Parliament Hill and the Parliamentary Precinct.

One new COVID-19 death reported in Ottawa Saturday

Ottawa Public Health is reporting one more person has died due to COVID-19 in the city.

To date, OPH has reported 709 resident deaths linked to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

The number of residents being treated in local hospitals because of an active COVID-19 infection rose slightly to 66 after hitting a 2022 low of 65 on Friday.

To count as a hospitalization intervention, the hospitalization must involve treatment for an active COVID-19 infection or have a hospital stay extended because of active COVID-19. This also applies to people who may acquire COVID-19 while in hospital. Local hospitals have reported higher numbers of patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Here is a look at the latest number of patients with COVID-19 reported by each Ottawa hospital:

CHEO: Five patients

Montfort Hospital: 20 patients

Queensway Carleton Hospital: 37 patients

The Ottawa Hospital: 117 patients

OPH reported another 172 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, which is an undercount of the true level of infection in the city because of testing restrictions. OPH has reported a total of 59,267 cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa since March 11, 2020.

The Ottawa COVID-19 wastewater monitoring project shows the viral signal has held steady at pre-2022 levels in the first few days of February after dropping through the latter half of January.

The number of hospitalizations reported across Ontario is on the decline. The province said 2,493 people are currently in hospital with COVID-19 as of Saturday. On Friday, there were more than 2,600 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across Ontario. There are 501 people in intensive care, down from 517.

‘Disgraceful end’: Luxury cruise ships seized by Feds in Bahamas

A luxury cruise ship operator is underwater — and left passengers high and dry.

US Marshals seized a pair of popular cruise ships in the Bahamas Friday upon allegations that their Miami-based owner, Crystal Cruises, has failed to pay $4.6 million in fuel bills.

Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony had only crew members on board, according to Cruise Law News, while hundreds of passengers faced “bedlam” after being hurriedly booted off the ships before the vessels were seized.

“What a dreadful, disgraceful end to a so-called luxury #cruise line,” tweeted Cruise Law News publisher and maritime attorney Jim Walker.

A third ship, the Crystal Endeavor, the line’s newest and most luxurious vessel, was seized in Argentina, Cruise Law News reported Saturday afternoon.

The Serenity and Symphony dumped their passengers in Bimini last month before setting sail for the perceived safety of international waters. The passengers, some of whom expected to cruise on to California, were ferried to Fort Lauderdale and then left to fend for themselves.

Memphis BLM founder Pamela Moses sentenced to 6 years for illegally voting

The founder of the Black Lives Matter chapter in Memphis has been sentenced to prison for six years for illegally registering to vote in Tennessee, prosecutors said.

Pamela Moses, the 44-year-old activist, was ordered to spend six years and one day behind bars Monday for registering to vote despite felony convictions in 2015 that made her ineligible to do so, Shelby County District Attorney General. Amy Weirich said.

In handing down the sentence, Judge Michael Ward accused her of deceiving the probation department to obtain the right to vote,

“You tricked the probation department into giving you documents saying you were off probation,” Ward said in court, the Washington Post reported.
