Feds steer $200M in COVID-19 relief to left-wing nonprofit to aid illegal entrants

The Vera Institute of Justice reportedly received more than $10 million in funding from progressive megadonor George Soros' Open Society Foundation from 2016 to 2019.

This week's Golden Horseshoe is awarded to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for $200.5 million in contracts awarded to a George Soros-funded, progressive nonprofit in the past year for legal services for illegal immigrants.

Last year, according to watchdog group Open the Books, HHS awarded a $158 million contract for legal services for unaccompanied, undocumented minors to the Vera Institute of Justice, a left-wing advocacy organization that backs defunding the police, criminal justice and bail reform, and releasing illegal aliens from ICE detention.

The contract is now at $164 million, as an additional $6 million was obligated by HHS in just the last week, according to the federal government's USASPENDING.gov website. The contract amount could potentially reach $198 million.

Of the $164 million, HHS obligated $64 million in COVID-19 relief funds for the legal representation of undocumented unaccompanied minors, according to the contract summary posted on USASPENDING.gov.

HHS did not respond to a request for comment.

"The Vera Institute of Justice is a behemoth progressive nonprofit based out of New York City with well over a $140 million budget, which they use to fund a slate of progressive causes and initiatives across the country," Jason Hopkins, an investigative associate with the Immigration Reform Law Institute, told Fox News. "Whether that be criminal justice reform, bail reform and also immigration."

The Vera Institute of Justice is tied to left-wing megadonor George Soros and received more than $10 million in funding from his Open Society Foundation from 2016 to 2019, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

In addition to the HHS contract award, the DOJ also awarded contracts to the Vera Institute to fund legal services for illegal immigrants in 2021, Just The News has learned.

The DOJ awarded five additional contracts totaling $36.8 million to the group for legal services for family groups, unaccompanied children's custodians, and "immigration court help desk."

Those DOJ contracts include:

$9.4 million for EOIR, which refers to the Executive Office for Immigration Review

$12.7 million for legal orientation program

$4.7 million for family group legal orientation program

$4.6 million for "immigration court help desk"

$5.3 million for legal orientation for unaccompanied alien children custodians

The five contracts were all funded by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, which received $284 million in new appropriations in fiscal year 2022, carried over a balance of $48 million from FY2021 and also has "the authority to use $24 million of other budgetary resources," according to its fiscal year summary.

Omicron BA.2 variant to become dominant worldwide - WHO regional director

Dr. Dorit Nitzan explains the difference between Omicron and the new sub-variant, and why there may be bigger issues at hand.

While the original Omicron variant first detected in South Africa in late November is still the dominant virus strain in most countries, others are starting to worry about a new sub-variant that has been halting the downward trend in infections – the BA.2 sub-variant.

One of three Omicron sub-variants, the BA.2 variant has become the main strain circulating in several countries including Denmark, the UK, India and South Africa. According to a February 3 Financial Times report on the sub-variant, it has as many as 27 mutations that are not found in the original Omicron variant, BA.1.

However, is this enough to make it a real threat to countries still struggling to recover from the Omicron wave and the unprecedented rate of infections it brought with it? Public health bodies in both Denmark and the UK have determined the variant to be between 30%-34% more infectious than BA.1, said the Financial Times, and the UK designated BA.2 to be a variant under investigation back in mid-January. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also currently investigating it as a variant of concern, as they are with all Omicron sub-lineages.

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post, Dr. Dorit Nitzan, regional emergency director for the WHO, explained the expected trajectory of the sub-variant, and what it could mean for the future of the pandemic.

“The expected trajectory is that it will become the new dominant variant, as once it crosses past a certain threshold it becomes dominant – like we’re seeing in Denmark and the UK,” she said in answer to whether or not other countries can expect to see a similar rise in sub-variant cases in the coming weeks. However, she said, there does not seem to be a risk of reinfection for those who have already contracted the original Omicron variant, as the two variants are not different enough, although there is not yet enough research to be absolutely sure.

Report on Police Killed During Joe Biden’s Tenure: Most Since 1995

An FBI database of police officers killed in the line of duty shows that more have died since Joe Biden became president than deaths dating back to 1995.

“We believe it’s a combination … of the George Floyd protests — riots, if you will; a general feeling of a preference for less law enforcement; and less prosecution and less policing,” Jason Johnson, president of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF) and a 20-year police veteran, said in a Fox News report.

“Law enforcement officers have essentially been marginalized and demoralized and cast aside and encouraged now to enforce the law,” Johnson said. “And so we’ve seen massive jumps in the homicide rate in cities across America.”

Johnson said rising homicide rates in major U.S. cities have “also resulted in many more officers being assaulted because … a lot of leaders in these cities and leaders in Congress and leaders in the White House have really voiced a lack of respect for law enforcement officers.”

'Hellboy' actor Ron Perlman says it's time for blue states to 'separate' from red states

Ron Perlman, the Hollywood movie star known for playing tough-talking, cigar-chomping loudmouths, recently endorsed the concept of a national divorce via social media.

“You don’t wanna live in my world and I certainly don’t want to live in yours,” Perlman wrote.

Perlman’s disdain for conservatives and the Republican Party is well documented. After the passing of popular conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh, Perlman took to Twitter to express his condolences to the Devil, “who will no doubt have to spend the rest of eternity with Rush Limbaugh.”

The "Hellboy" actor also used his platform to accuse a disabled veteran turned ICE agent of having a Nazi symbol tattooed on him.

Scott Morrison's home affairs minister said 'we need to get him out' in an awkward slip of the tongue when asked about the prime minister.

Karen Andrews quickly clarified that she meant getting Mr Morrison out talking to voters on the campaign trail before the election, not out of a job.

She was asked in an interview with ABC's Insiders on Sunday whether Mr Morrison was the asset for the party he was three years ago going into the 2019 election.

'Circumstances are different now, he is a great campaigner and he was in 2019 and he connected very well with Australians. He has been very focused on the job,' Ms Andrews replied.

'It's different now, is that what you're saying?' interviewer David Speers pushed.
