Credit Suisse faces charges in cocaine trafficking trial

The drug money laundering case centers on the bank’s ties with a criminal ring

A Swiss criminal court opened trial proceedings on Monday against Credit Suisse, accusing the bank of failing to do enough to stop money laundering linked to drug trafficking by a Bulgarian criminal organization. Associated Press reports that the gang employed a wrestler who once hauled millions in currency by car to Switzerland.

The names of the defendants have not been made public, to protect their privacy, but Swiss prosecutors identified Credit Suisse by name in an indictment announced in December 2020.

The charge, which centers on a former manager at the Swiss bank and two members of the criminal ring, follows a years-long investigation into allegations of wrongdoing that apparently took place between 2004 and 2008.

According to AP, the case against the bank revolves around charges that it “did not take all necessary measures to halt the infraction of money laundering” by one of its employees.

Credit Suisse has denied any wrongdoing, saying during the hearing on Monday that it “unreservedly rejects as meritless all allegations in this legacy matter raised against it and is convinced that its former employee is innocent.” The bank added that it “will defend itself vigorously in court.”

The Swiss attorney general’s office said that, after the fall of communism, top-level athletes in Bulgaria “turned towards other sources of income, and numerous wrestlers received approaches from mafia clans.” Thus, one unnamed wrestler aimed to cash in by trafficking tons of cocaine through “mules” from South America to Europe by air and sea and then laundering the profits.

The proceeds from the drug sales entered Swiss bank accounts from 2004 to at least 2007 and were used to buy real estate in Bulgaria and Switzerland in particular, court proceedings show.

Prosecutors said that the wrestler’s “main offense was committed in February 2006, when he transported the equivalent of more than four million Swiss francs (over $4 million) in small denomination notes hidden in his car from Barcelona to Switzerland.”

They also said that a former Credit Suisse executive in charge of business relations with the criminal organization carried out transactions for the ring despite “strong indications that the funds were of criminal origin.”

The executive is accused of preventing the identification of the origin of the funds, which ultimately involved transactions of more than 140 million Swiss francs (about $150 million).

Credit Suisse has consistently rejected the allegations and has said the court could order the “disgorgement of profits” and a maximum fine of about $5 million.

Senate Bill Creates Massive Surveillance Program to Scan All of Your Online Messages

People don’t want outsiders reading their private messages —not their physical mail, not their texts, not their DMs, nothing. It’s a clear and obvious point, but one place it doesn’t seem to have reached is the U.S. Senate.

A group of lawmakers led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have re-introduced the EARN IT Act, an incredibly unpopular bill from 2020 that was dropped in the face of overwhelming opposition. Let’s be clear: the new EARN IT Act would pave the way for a massive new surveillance system, run by private companies, that would roll back some of the most important privacy and security features in technology used by people around the globe. It’s a framework for private actors to scan every message sent online and report violations to law enforcement. And it might not stop there. The EARN IT Act could ensure that anything hosted online—backups, websites, cloud photos, and more—is scanned.

TAKE ACTION

TELL CONGRESS TO REJECT THE EARN IT ACT

New Internet Rules, From Juneau to Jackson

The bill empowers every U.S. state or territory to create sweeping new Internet regulations, by stripping away the critical legal protections for websites and apps that currently prevent such a free-for-all—specifically, Section 230. The states will be allowed to pass whatever type of law they want to hold private companies liable, as long as they somehow relate their new rules to online child abuse.

The goal is to get states to pass laws that will punish companies when they deploy end-to-end encryption, or offer other encrypted services. This includes messaging services like WhatsApp, Signal, and iMessage, as well as web hosts like Amazon Web Services. We know that EARN IT aims to spread the use of tools to scan against law enforcement databases because the bill’s sponsors have said so. In a “Myths and Facts” document distributed by the bill’s proponents, it even names the government-approved software that they could mandate (PhotoDNA, a Microsoft program with an API that reports directly to law enforcement databases).

The document also attacks Amazon for not scanning enough of its content. Since Amazon is the home of Amazon Web Services, host of a huge number of websites, that implies the bill’s aim is to ensure that anything hosted online gets scanned.

Separately, the bill creates a 19-person federal commission, dominated by law enforcement agencies, which will lay out voluntary “best practices” for attacking the problem of online child abuse. Regardless of whether state legislatures take their lead from that commission, or from the bill’s sponsors themselves, we know where the road will end. Online service providers, even the smallest ones, will be compelled to scan user content, with government-approved software like PhotoDNA. If EARN IT supporters succeed in getting large platforms like Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services to scan, they might not even need to compel smaller websites—the government will already have access to the user data, through the platform.

A provision of the bill that purports to protect services using encryption (Section 5, Page 16) doesn’t come close to getting the job done. State prosecutors or private attorneys would be able to drag an online service provider into court over accusations that their users committed crimes, then use the fact that the service chose to use encryption as evidence against them—a strategy that’s specifically allowed under EARN IT.

‘Young Turks’ Show (Still on Spotify and YouTube) Features ‘N-Word’ Repeatedly.

A video of anchors on the far-left Young Turks program repeatedly saying the n-word and “fag” (as a derogatory term for a homosexual) has amassed over 2.1 million views on Twitter, with no signs of slowing. The compilation was shared to Twitter by @DrunkNewsHQ who sarcastically captioned the video “Joe Rogan N Word compilation.”

The first 46-second clip features left-wing shock jocks Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygyr, Hasan Piker, Jimmy Dore, and various other guests and anchors repeatedly using the phrase, along with other terms like “fag” and “cracker.” The word “cracker” is finding new levels of acceptability by far-leftists after New York City Mayor Eric Adams bragged about “kicking cracker asses” while in the New York Police Department.

A majority of the uses of the n-word came from Kasparian and Uygur.

A second clip was posted to YouTube in December, predominantly featuring Uygur and Kasparian. Though some of the clips are overlapping, the frequency of Uygur, a known genocide-denier, using the word, is extraordinary.

A video of Joe Rogan using the n-word was shared to social media last week. Calls to cancel the podcaster have come thick and fast from the political left, with CNN’s Brian Stelter and Jim Acosta demanding Spotify remove him from their network. The news came as CNN’s own President was forced to resign over an affair with a colleague.

Last year, Rogan brought in 14.9 million hours of listenership to Spotify. Most recently, he drew an audience of more than 50 million listeners to a single episode of his show.

The Young Turk’s founder Cenk Uygur has been feuding with Rogan on and off for years. Most recently, Uygur called Rogan a “meathead,” in response to Rogan calling Uygur “silly.”

The Young Turks has held a public platform since 2002, and has only recently reached 5.17 million subscribers on YouTube. Uygur, who’s show is named after a group of mass murderers from the Ottoman Empire, is known for peddling misinformation.

Google sued by Swedish firm for $2.4 billion after antitrust fine

Alphabet Inc-owned Google is vowing to fight a $2.4 billion lawsuit filed in Europe by Swedish e-commerce site PriceRunner, which claims the US tech giant has caused it “damage” through its “infringement” of the continent’s anti-trust laws.

PriceRunner alleges that Google has used its “monopoly-like position” in Europe, where the US firm’s search engine has a market share of “over 90%,” to give its shopping site a competitive advantage over other e-commerce platforms.

The Swedish firm filed its action just weeks after a November court ruling which upheld the European Union’s $2.8 billion fine.

The fine was first levied by EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager in 2017 over Google boosting its own price-comparison shopping service in search results to give it an unfair advantage against smaller European rivals.

“This is also a matter of survival for many European entrepreneurial companies and job opportunities within tech,” said PriceRunner CEO Mikael Lindahl said in a statement.

“If American tech giants, through a market position almost equal to a monopoly, are allowed to do exactly as they please and manipulate markets, we can almost certainly count on the fact that many tech companies in Europe will be affected far beyond the comparison shopping market in focus today,” Lindahl said.

Google has denied the allegations. In a statement to the Post, the company said that it made changes to its shopping ads program that addressed European regulators’ concerns.

“The changes we made to shopping ads back in 2017 are working successfully, generating growth and jobs for hundreds of comparison shopping services who operate more than 800 websites across Europe,” said Frederic Abrard, the director of Google’s CSS Shopping Ads program.

“The system is subject to intensive monitoring by the EU Commission and two sets of outside experts,” Abrard said. “PriceRunner chose not to use shopping ads on Google, so may not have seen the same successes that others have. We look forward to defending our case in court.”

EU regulators have been a thorn in Google’s side in recent years as Brussels has leveled penalties totaling nearly $10 billion by Brussels over alleged antitrust violations.

Boris Johnson’s ‘Woke’ Communications Chief Lobbied for China’s Huawei: Report

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s newly installed head of communications reportedly lobbied the government on behalf of controversial Chinese tech company Huawei.

Over the weekend, Guto Harri, a former BBC journalist and ex-presenter for GB News — who left the station after controversially taking the knee for BLM on live television — announced that he had resigned from his post with lobbying firm Hawthorn Advisers to once again direct communications for Boris Johnson. The Prime Minister is looking to reset the political narrative after months of scandals surrounding apparent breaches of the lockdown measures his government created.

However, the new spin doctor has become a source of controversy himself, with Brexit leader Nigel Farage sarcastically writing: “A woke Remainer is just what Boris needs in Number 10!” in reference to Harri’s appointment.

“I am sure that Tory voters will be thrilled to know that Guto Harri has been working for Hawthorn… who lobby for Huawei,” Farage added on Sunday.

Just hours after the Brexiteer’s comments, The Sun newspaper reported that Harri had a “hands-on role” in lobbying the government on behalf of the Chinese telecom during his time at Hawthorn.

Sources close to the spin doctor said that his work on behalf of Huawei — which has been described as “effectively state-owned” by the communist regime — should not be of concern considering its role in providing 3G and 4G coverage in Britain.

In 2020, the government decided to ban Huawei from the country’s 5G networks by 2027 in light of concerns raised by the Trump administration that the company has embedded “backdoor access” into its technology, and therefore is a potential espionage threat.

A Downing Street source said of Harri: “This is separate to his new role in No10. This Government is committed to removing Huawei from UK 5G networks by 2027.”

Harri rose to national attention last summer after infamously carrying out the Black Lives Matter performative gesture of “taking the knee” in response to alleged football racism while he was presenting live on GB News, leading to a ratings crash for the upstart “anti-woke” news network.

Childless Ottawa Mayor: ‘Disturbing’ to See Kids in ‘Bouncy Castles’ Having ‘Fun’ at Protest

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson described the presence of children playing in bouncy castles at the Freedom Convoy demonstration as “disturbing” in a video interview with CTV News on Sunday.

Watson is 60, unmarried, and without children.

Ottawa residents living near the demonstration on Parliament Hill and nearby downtown areas are enduring “a living hell,” Watson claims. He emphasized that they “have been through hell.”

He stated, “It’s disturbing when you see the protest turning into what looks like some kind of a fun carnival, where they’ve got bouncy castles and hot tubs and saunas, a complete insult to the people who are putting up with this nonsense for the last seven days, and it shows great deal of insensitivity.”

Breitbart News recorded video of a bouncy castle with playing children on Saturday. Dozens of children were observed with parents attending the demonstration on and around Wellington Street adjacent Canada’s federal legislature.

CBC, the left-wing state-funded broadcaster, reported on the presence of saunas and bouncy castles at the protest.

“They shouldn’t be bringing in hot tubs, and they shouldn’t be bringing bouncy castles,” Watson repeated. “That’s just ridiculous. That should have been stopped.”

Tyson Foods Soars To Record After Hiking Beef, Chicken And Pork Prices By Double Digits

Stock of Tyson Foods, the world's second largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork after Brazil's JBS S.A., is soaring 9%, hitting an all time high and is one of the S&P's best companies this morning…

… after the company reported blowout earnings (thanks to passing on surging food prices) and announced that it is raising prices even more as it grapples with a tight labor market and smaller livestock herds. According to the report, beef prices jumped by 32% in the quarter, with chicken up ~20% and pork 13%.

This helped Tyson's operating margin grow to 11.3%, up from 6.7%, a year earlier. The higher meat prices has, however, had the Biden administration scrambling as profits continue to mount at meatpackers, while runaway inflation continues to crush Biden's collapsing approval rating.

This is what the company reported:

Beef: Sales volume decreased due to the impacts associated with a challenging labor environment and increased supply chain constraints, partially offset by strong global demand Average sales price increased as input costs such as live cattle, labor, freight and transportation costs increased and demand for our beef products remained strong

Pork: Sales volume was up slightly as strong global demand was offset by the impacts associated with a challenging labor environment. Average sales price increased as input costs such as live hogs, labor freight and transportation costs increased and demand for our pork products remained strong partially offset by unfavorable mix associated with labor shortages

Chicken: Sales volume increased primarily due to increased live production and a strong demand environment. Average sales price increased due to the effects of an inflationary cost environment

Prepared Foods: Sales volume decreased due to the divestiture of our pet treats business in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021 as well as lower production throughput primarily associated with a challenging labor and supply environment Average sales price increased primarily due to the effects of revenue management in an inflationary cost environment

Overall sales for beef rose about 25% to $5 billion, helping Springdale, Arkansas-based Tyson's sales rise 23.6% to $12.93 billion in the first quarter ended Jan. 1. Analysts on average were expecting revenue of $12.18 billion; net income attributable jumped to $1.12 billion and excluding items, Tyson earned $2.87 per share, also beating estimates of $1.95 per share.

Hong Kong opens quarantine camp to Covid-19 patients, allows home isolation for close contacts as caseload hits record 614

City leader to meet top advisers on Tuesday to discuss tightening social-distancing measures even further

Chinese University’s Professor Kwok Kin-on predicts daily confirmed case count will soon reach 1,000

An alarming surge of Covid-19 infections in Hong Kong set a daily record of more than 600 cases on Monday, as authorities announced they would have to start sending patients with mild or no symptoms to the government’s quarantine camp to free up hospital beds while allowing close contacts of carriers to self-isolate at home.

Warning that the Omicron-fuelled fifth wave of the pandemic was spiralling out of control, officials laid out plans to begin sending infected people to Penny’s Bay from Tuesday and allow home quarantine for close contacts whose flats were approved as suitable for isolation.

The city’s leader will also meet her top advisers on Tuesday to discuss further tightening social-distancing measures to address the infection surge, partly blamed on Lunar New Year celebratory gatherings. Tougher steps could entail expanding the use of the vaccine pass to cover shopping malls and public transport.

Back to this bullshit again

Lone Suicide Bomber with 'Disturbing Lethality' Carried Out Kabul Airport Attack, US Military Says

The blast outside the Kabul airport that killed 13 American troops in August was caused by a single suicide bomber, despite initial descriptions from U.S. officials that it was a "complex" attack, military officials said Friday as they unveiled the findings of an internal investigation into the attack.

Military investigators also determined that the attack was "not preventable" in spite of indications of threats to the airport beforehand.

"The investigation found that a single explosive device killed at least 170 Afghan civilians and 13 U.S. service members by explosively directing ball bearings through a packed crowd and into our men and women at Abbey Gate," U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Frank McKenzie said in opening remarks at a press briefing about the investigation. "The disturbing lethality of this device was confirmed by the 58 U.S. service members who were killed and wounded despite the universal wear of body armor and helmets that did stop ball bearings that impacted them but could not prevent catastrophic injuries to areas not covered."

Eleven Marines, one soldier and one sailor became the last U.S. fatalities in America's 20-year war in Afghanistan following the Aug. 26 suicide bombing outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport. The U.S. military was conducting an evacuation at the airport as throngs of Afghans desperate to flee the Taliban amassed outside and pleaded with troops to be among those flown out to safety.

The attack has been attributed to the Afghan branch of ISIS, known as ISIS-Khorasan.

Another 45 service members were injured in the attack, according to the newly released investigation findings. That's an increase from the 26 officials initially said were injured, a difference investigators attributed Friday to later screenings for traumatic brain injuries.

U.S. officials had also initially said the bombing was followed by militants opening firing into the crowd.

But on Friday, officials said that was a mistaken assessment fueled by the chaos of the scene, as well as ball bearing injuries that resembled gunshot wounds and the fact that Marines and British service members fired warning shots after the bombing.

Investigators, led by Army Brig. Gen. Lance Curtis, interviewed 139 people and reviewed 250 exhibits to reach their findings, Curtis said Friday. No Afghan witnesses were interviewed, investigators said, citing the difficulty of doing so after the military withdrew from Afghanistan four days later.

"Based upon our investigation at the tactical level, this was not preventable," Curtis said. "The leaders on the ground followed the proper measures. And anytime there was an imminent threat warning, they followed the proper procedures. They lowered their profile, they sought cover and, at times, they even ceased operations at the gate."

Netanyahu rails against cops over spyware claims: Like IDF bombing Israeli civilians

Opposition laments latest bombshell report as a ‘dark day’ for Israel, demands urgent investigation that must have backing from coalition and opposition

Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday decried alleged illicit police phone hacking, including of his son and figures involved in his trial, as a “dark day for the state of Israel.”

“This matter concerns all Israeli citizens, not just right or left,” he told the Knesset plenum.

“Something inconceivable has happened here. Elements in the police illegally spied, using the most aggressive tools in the world, on countless citizens — journalists, social activists from right and left, mayors, businesspeople, politicians and their families,” the former premier said.

“They exposed citizens, followed them, listened in on them, and got into their most buried secrets. Who knows what improprieties they used it for? A spying application meant to be used against terror and to fight our enemies turned into an everyday tool for police to spy on civilians, in violation of every law and norm,” he added.

His comments came in the wake of an explosive report Monday morning by the Calcalist business daily alleging that police used the NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware to hack into the phones of government officials, mayors, activists, journalists and his own family members and advisers.

Netanyahu likened the alleged spying to the Israel Defense Forces “using planes meant to be used against Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas to blow up Israeli civilians.”

Biden Admin To Fund Crack Pipe Distribution To Advance ‘Racial Equity’

$30 million program will provide 'smoking kits' to vulnerable communities

The Biden administration is set to fund the distribution of crack pipes to drug addicts as part of its plan to advance "racial equity."

The $30 million grant program, which closed applications Monday and will begin in May, will provide funds to nonprofits and local governments to help make drug use safer for addicts. Included in the grant, which is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, are funds for "smoking kits/supplies." A spokesman for the agency told the Washington Free Beacon that these kits will provide pipes for users to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and "any illicit substance."

HHS said the kits aim to reduce the risk of infection when smoking substances with glass pipes, which can lead to infections through cuts and sores. Applicants for the grants are prioritized if they treat a majority of "underserved communities," including African Americans and "LGBTQ+ persons," as established under President Joe Biden's executive order on "advancing racial equity."

Democratic-run cities such as San Francisco and Seattle have distributed smoking kits to residents. Some local governments, however, have in recent years backed away from their smoking kit programs over concerns they enable drug abuse. Louisville, Ky., for example, allowed convenience stores to sell smoking kits but later banned them. Legislators in Maryland ditched their distribution plan after facing backlash from local law enforcement and African-American leaders.

Sgt. Clyde Boatwright, president of the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, said government resources are better spent on preventing drug abuse rather than making it safer.

"If we look at more of a preventive campaign as opposed to an enabling campaign, I think it will offer an opportunity to have safer communities with fewer people who are dependable on these substances," Boatwright told the Free Beacon.

Other "harm reduction" equipment that qualifies for funding include syringes, vaccinations, disease screenings, condoms, and fentanyl strips. The grant program will last three years and includes 25 awards of up to $400,000.

An HHS spokesman declined to specify what is included in the smoking kits. Similar distribution efforts provide mouthpieces to prevent glass cuts, rubber bands to prevent burns, and filters to minimize the risk of disease.

It is against federal law to distribute or sell drug paraphernalia unless authorized by the government.

President Biden's son Hunter is a longtime user of crack cocaine.

A whistle-blower who was tortured in a Chinese prison for exposing Amazon’s horrific slave labour operations asks for an apology

A Chinese whistle-blower by the name of Tang Mengfing who says he was imprisoned and tortured by the communist regime after exposing Amazon for abusing its employees and treating them like slaves is now asking for an apology.

According to reports, Tang spent two miserable years under the heavy boot of oppression for reporting on substandard working conditions at factories where Alexa-enabled spy devices are manufactured.

Tang spent several years investigating the horrific working conditions at Foxconn factories, which produce Amazon Echo and Echo Dot devices as well as Kindle devices and various Apple products like the iPhone. He learned that school-aged children are forced to work extreme hours, often without pay.

“Tang alleged that school-aged children were put to work in the Foxconn factory, and that many were forced to work beyond the allotted 36 hours of overtime in a month, with some exceeding over 100 hours – essentially functioning as unpaid workers beyond their allotted hours,” reported The Post Millennial.

Tang was later punished for revealing all of this and more. He recently told The Guardian that during his imprisonment, he was beaten and tortured by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, who appear to be working in lockstep with Jeff Bezos and other tech gurus to exploit children.

“My father always taught me that I should be a good person and, because I followed my heart and believed that justice should be served, I reported the serious violations at Hengyang Foxconn,” Tang is quoted as saying. “Yet my imprisonment has caused such great harm to me and my family.”

Buying from Amazon means supporting child abuse, torture and authoritarianism

Amazon was eventually investigated and Foxconn was fined by the Chinese government for Labour violations. However, Tang says the company should have done more to protect him from being punished and abused by local authorities in retaliation.

Tang says he was handcuffed in stress positions, slapped by guards, beaten and forced to sign a confession stating that he lied about the allegations he made against the Foxconn factory.

“I refused to sign seven times, and they got angry and handcuffed me to the bottom of the iron frame, unable to stand, squat, sit; only bending, half squatting all night. In the early morning, I could not stand anymore,” Tang told The Guardian.

“I think Amazon should give me an explanation, tell me if I really deserve to be sent to jail? If not, Amazon should give me an apology, along with its partner, Foxconn, to assist me to appeal for a redress, and provide compensation.”

Canadian 'Anti-Hate Network' Caught Spreading Hate Hoax to Smear Truckers

Bernie Farber's "Canadian Anti-Hate Network" received $250,000 in funding last year from PM Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party

Bernie Farber, the former CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress and current leader of the "Canadian Anti-Hate Network," was caught spreading a hate hoax on Sunday in an effort to smear Canadian truckers.

Farber posted an image of an anti-Semitic flier and said it was, "Taken by a friend in Ottawa at the Occupation. Apparently in plain sight."

It turns out the exact same photograph was shared by someone on Twitter two weeks ago in Miami.

After being exposed, Farber blamed his "friend from Ottawa" and insisted the "friend" told him they "saw the same thing," though Farber himself said he "cannot attest to it" as he's not even in Ottawa.

"That said racist and antisemitic posters and flyers have now been seen by others," Farber insisted.

Farber's Canadian Anti-Hate Network, a thinly veiled pro-Israel advocacy organization modeled after the Anti-Defamation League, received $250,000 from Justin Trudeau's Liberals in 2021.

Farber's Anti-Hate Network posted an article on Friday calling for new "anti-hate" legislation to advance mass internet censorship and imprison Canadians who post "hate" online.

The article said the Ottawa "occupation" shows "why we need anti-hate legislation."

"Every day the government allows social media companies to self-regulate, Canadians are getting misled, enraged, and absorbed into the far-right and Covid conspiracy movement," Farber's group said. "Now a far-right mob has occupied the capital."

"It will be difficult, if not impossible, for members of the intertwined antivaxx and far-right movement to come back to reality. New people are finding them every day. With online harms legislation, we may be able to disrupt that pipeline by making it harder for dis/misinformation to find people. We may be able to build a fence of protection both online and offline around the groups that the far-right slanders, harasses, threatens, and attacks. We have to try."

Trudeau's Liberals announced on the same day that they're planning to reintroduce their "anti-hate" online censorship bill C-36 "as soon as possible."

Sex Trafficking in Greater Atlanta a $300 Million Industry

Airport officials and law enforcement partners in Atlanta, Georgia, have launched a new initiative to curb sex trafficking, which has blossomed into a US$300 million industry in the city’s greater area, according to a press release by Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL).

The high volume of passenger movement at Atlanta’s huge airport significantly raises the threat of human trafficking.

“The fact that we are home to the world’s busiest airport certainly makes us a landing spot for traffickers and their victims,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens in a press conference last week.

The initiative called “Not in My County” brought together local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies who will combine resources to end the rising trend.

An annual report published by the U.S. Department of State suggests that Georgia is not doing enough to eliminate trafficking. While the state meets the minimum standard for prosecuting cases, fewer cases were investigated in 2021 (13 cases) compared to 2019 (17 cases). Similarly, only eight defendants were tried throughout the year, compared to 29 defendants in 2019.

Recommendations from the report include calls for increasing transparency with the state’s anti-trafficking efforts, improving measures to support victims of trafficking, improving law enforcement’s capacity in handling complex cases, and encouraging greater victim participation in law enforcement operations.

Another U.S. Department of State report says that online sexual exploitation since the start of the pandemic has become a major recruiting for human trafficking. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) cited a 35% rise in human trafficking arrests in 2021.

To address the national concern for human trafficking, DHS established the Center for Countering Human Trafficking (CCHT) in October 2020. The nationwide taskforce address areas of human trafficking including sex exploitation, forced labour, and goods imported into the U.S. which were produced by forced labour.

The CCHT hosted more than 30 trainings to over 2,000 law enforcement personnel to increase awareness, identify potential indicators of trafficking, and showcase best practices for conducting investigations and victim assistance.

Stoltenberg: NATO Considering Increasing Presence in Eastern Flank on Long-term Basis

NATO is considering the possibility of increasing its presence in the eastern flank of the alliance on a long-term basis, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday.

"We are considering a more longer-term adjustment so our posture, our presence in eastern part of the alliance, No final decision has been made on that but there is a process now going on within NATO also of course in close consultations with our military commanders, to adjust our presence in the eastern part of the alliance to further strengthen our deterrence and defense," Stoltenberg told a press conference.

Commenting on a recent Russia-China joint statement, Stoltenberg said that Beijing has joined Moscow for the first time in urging NATO not to expand any further.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, signed a statement on International Relations Entering a New Era and Global Sustainable Development, in which the sides, inter alia, opposed "further enlargement of NATO."

"For the first time China joins on Russia in calling on NATO to stop admitting new members. This is an attempt to deny sovereign nations the right to make their own choices," Stoltenberg said during a joint press conference with the Polish president.

The NATO chief added that the alliance respects the decision of every nation concerning the accession, and stressed that the world should not return to the time of "spheres of influence."

Russia has repeatedly warned that NATO's eastward expansion, as well as the emergence of the alliance's military infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of its borders imperils its national security.

In December, Moscow published its proposals for the United States and NATO on security guarantees. The proposals, if agreed to, would prohibit the US and Russia from deploying intermediate and shorter-range missiles within striking distance of each other's territory, among other terms. Also, Moscow specifically requested guarantees that NATO would not expand eastward to include Ukraine and Georgia. The US insists it will not allow anyone to slam NATO's open door policy shut.

Ukraine & NATO Agree Threat of Russian Invasion 'Low' - But US Continues "Apocalyptic" Rhetoric

Ukraine is again trying to give Washington a dose of reality and clamping down on overly alarmist hype surrounding the potential for a Russian invasion of Ukraine. As we detailed earlier, Biden's national security adviser in Sunday interviews said the invasion could come "any day now" - or possibly even "tomorrow".

Further, Western and especially US media reports continue to push the idea that Moscow is intent on pursuing military action in Ukraine. For example The Washington Post demonstrated the ongoing contention over just what Russia's "intent" is…

Over the weekend, senior Russian officials dismissed new U.S. intelligence reports that Russia could take over Kyiv in days as alarmist and as unlikely as an attack by Washington on London.

"Madness and scaremongering continues.… What if we would say that US could seize London in a week and cause 300K civilian deaths?" Russia’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyanskiy, tweeted Sunday.

Ironically, the latest high-level statements out of both Kiev and Brussels suggest that both Ukraine and NATO headquarters actually side with Russia's criticisms of Washington's "apocalyptic" rhetoric.

On Sunday Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba urged his fellow citizens to ignore "apocalyptic predictions" that a Russian invasion is imminent. Kuleba sought to calm his country by further saying, "Different capitals have different scenarios, but Ukraine is ready for any development." It reaffirms President Volodymyr Zelensky's words from a week ago saying there are "no tanks in the streets" and that foreign media must stop stoking unnecessary panic.

And Ukraine's top military chief, Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov, reacted to White House officials saying this weekend that a Russian invasion could be "days" away by saying this threat remains "low". Russian media has reported Reznikov's words issued to Italy’s Repubblica newspaper in a fresh interview as follows:

"It [an alleged aggression] may happen sooner or later, but there are no immediate risks. First, they spoke about January (when the alleged intrusion may begin - TASS), now they speak about February, some say it will be in the spring," he said, commenting on Western intelligence services’ forecasts. "We won’t be fighting, but when we are attacked, we will get prepared for that," he added.

According to Reznikov, Kiev is not hatching any plans of attacking Crimea, Lugansk, or Donetsk. "We won’t stage any offensive: Ukrainians are living in Crimea, Lugansk, and Donetsk and it would put them at danger," he said.

Additionally, Ukraine's Defense Ministry has stated the following on its website: "We have all the information and realistically assess the situation. Many different hypothetical estimates and predictions can now be heard. Especially in foreign media. Some have even announced an invasion of Russia, which, however, took place 8 years ago.

Adding to these much toned-down assessments, the latest out of NATO itself also seems to push back against the White House.

Another Democrat spotted posing without a mask while campaigning ahead of the midterm

Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin is the latest Democratic politician to skirt restrictions she says she supports.

Another Democrat running for election in 2022 has been spotted maskless in a room full of masked up supporters.

On Sunday, at her campaign kickoff event, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), who is running for reelection to the House in a slightly different district, posted a photo of herself grin fully insight with rows of masked up supporters behind her.

"Elissa Slotkin supports mask mandates for everyone but herself. She is a complete hypocrite," said Mike Berg, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Slotkin, a moderate Democrat running against Republican state Sen. Tom Barrett, appears to be following the lead of another Democrat running in 2022 – Stacey Abrams. Over the weekend, the Abrams for governor campaign contended with a poor reaction to a picture of the candidate seated, maskless, with a group of masked up elementary school students.

"Stacey Abrams wants state government mask mandates for Georgians and their children. But it looks like they wouldn't apply when she's attending a photo op," said incumbent GOP Gov. Brian Kemp.

The Abrams campaign lashed out at the criticism, responding "It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack, and it is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records."

California Democrats Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti were spotted maskless, posing with celebrities and athletes at a Los Angeles Rams football game, despite the ongoing mask mandate in California.
